The Devil's Good Girl
Chapter 88: Who knows, right?

Chapter 88: Who knows, right?

Two days later...

"Gosh. I can’t believe some trashes will beat up a man who is minding his own business." Elise grumbled, clicking her mouse angrily. "This world had truly become a scary one."

She pouted as the invisible clouds hovering over her head turned darker. Fil, whose desk was beside Elise’s, slid her eyes into the corner.

"This is frustrating!" she expressed. "Whoever did this to Kenzo should be charged with attempted murder."

When Elise couldn’t take it anymore, she turned to Fil. "Fil, should we help with the investigation?"

"Help with the investigation? Like doing some legwork, check the CCTV recording that the police had already checked? And then take our work home since we couldn’t do it because of this extracurricular activity?" Fil replied innocently. "Sounds fun. Let’s do it."

"Never mind." Elise pouted, clicking her tongue in irritation. "I just feel really bad for Kenzo. How can some random guy beat him while on his way to the convenience store?"

Fil pressed her lips into a thin line. Just this morning, their boss, Olivia, disclosed to them what truly happened to Kenzo. Everyone knew Kenzo couldn’t come to work because of a terrible incident. Olivia only told Fil more details earlier because she trusted Fil, and Fil was the leader of the Solana Project. In other words, she had the right to know.

But Elise and everyone only heard this detail today.

Unfortunately, the details they knew were nothing like the truth. For Fil, Kenzo made a decision not to press charges. To be honest, she already guessed Kenzo still lied to her. He didn’t tell his brother what truly happened to him. If Kenzo did, she knew if a settlement was proceeding.

"I also feel bad for Kenzo, but I’m sure this is a lesson learned for him," Fil offered Elise a reassuring smile. "His injuries aren’t that bad."

"Are you sure?"

Of course not, was what Fil wanted to say. However, if that would ease Elise’s heart, then she didn’t have a choice but to lie. After all, Kenzo wasn’t accepting a visitor aside from Olivia and Fil.

"Would I lie to you?" Fil winked. "He’s doing fine. And the police are investigating. I’m sure they’ll do their job properly and Kenzo would make it a habit of keeping tabs on his groceries. So, next time, he wouldn’t go out in the middle of the night to buy food from the convenience store."

"He always acts so responsibly, but I guess he’s still not as organized as he portrays himself." Elise pouted and sighed. "Crazy how doing groceries can lead to such problems."

"It’s not doing the groceries. The problems are the people."

"Gosh." Elise smacked her lips, raising her brows as she watched Fil refocus her attention on her monitor. "Uhm, Fil? Are you okay?"

"Hmm? Why wouldn’t I?"

"I mean... you know, that thing between your fiance and your friend."

"Best friend."

Elise frowned but didn’t give any snide comment. "I didn’t ask you back then because I didn’t think I was in the right position. Also, I believe you aren’t angry about it because you have enough trust in them. But... neither of them denied the rumor."

"Ah."

"Is it really okay with you?" she followed up. "They’re the closest people in your heart. But it still doesn’t make sense to me that neither of them denied it until now. I know we’re different, but if I were in your shoes, I would be frustrated reading stories and allegations about my fiance and best friend. How could you read your fiance’s love story that isn’t yours? Do you know they even have shippers now?"

"Then the shippers might as well throw a party now."

"Huh?"

"Vincent and I broke up." Fil dropped the bomb, facing Elise squarely. "I’m single now."

Elise furrowed her brows as she dumbfoundedly stared at Fil’s hand. Her mouth fell open while her eyes went wide, only noticing now that Fil wasn’t wearing her engagement ring.

"What?!" This time, Elise raised her voice, which startled everyone in the office. She scooted over to Fil, snatching Fil’s hands to make sure the latter wasn’t just wearing it on the other hand. When she confirmed that both Fil’s fingers were empty, she gasped and looked up at her again.

"No way!" Elise whispered-yelled. "Seriously? Why? Is the rumor true? They’ve been seeing each other while — oh my god!"

Fil chuckled, putting Elise’s hands down. "It’s not like that."

"What?"

"We broke up because of a different reason and not about the rumor," Fil clarified. "So, they didn’t have any reason to clear up anything. No one’s going to hurt anymore. If anything, they’re both benefiting from it. Marianne got more endorsement, and many people were lining up outside her office to be interviewed by her. The articles’ publicity also helped increase the Hale Construction’s popularity."

Elise slowly frowned while listening to Fil. "What about you? What benefit did you get from this rumor and break up?"

For some reason, all Fil could do was stare at Elise. Studying the latter’s expression, her heart felt a little warm and her eyes softened.

"I am the one who dumped him," Fil confessed as a diversion from her. "It made me a little sad, but things happen. Not all relationships are meant to last. It’s just a shame that we only parted now when we should’ve done it earlier."

"Fil, do you want anything?" Elise moved closer, squeezing Fil’s hand. "Do you want me to sleep over at your place? I’m a fun company!"

’Err... Jack is coming home today. So, I don’t think that’s a good idea. She’d either see me differently or faint when she sees our biggest client is fighting for his right to frame all my used underwear.’

Fil wanted to shake her head as she remembered just how much of a pervert Jackson was. It was almost scary!

Fil maintained an understanding smile. "I’m okay, Elise. Don’t worry."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes." Fil nodded. "It’s not as bad as you think it is. Maybe because we’ve seen it coming. I don’t know if that’s a perk of being in a long-term relationship, but it ended on a good note. Vincent and I aren’t teens anymore. We agreed to stay friends."

"So, the breakup isn’t as dramatic as I thought? It’s not a messy one?"

"Haha. It’s not." Fil winked, arching a brow when she heard a vibration on her desk. She looked at Elise and smiled. "Finish that one. I’ll need it before lunchtime."

"Yes, ma’am!"

When Elise wheeled her chair back in place, Fil reached for her phone. As soon as she saw the message she received, her lips curled up.

[From: Anton

Hi, Fil! Remember that offer I told you about during Marcus’s party? I know you’ll be busy, but I just want to ask if you can still do it. You don’t have to if you really can’t. Just testing my luck. Who knows, right? xD]
