Chapter 85: Late night delivery

Fil never imagined it was easier to fake a tear than a smile. Her journey for revenge stretched her horizons on people — on herself. Staring at the mirror with tears in her eyes, the sides of her lips curled up into an amused smirk.

"It’s amazing," she whispered, watching her tears stain her cheeks. "My eyes are starting to swell."

She touched the corner of her eyes with her fingertips, barely holding herself back from laughing. "Am I going crazy, Jack?"

"Are you?" Jack’s voice came out from the phone on the corner of the bathroom sink counter. "You look perfect to me."

"Haha," she laughed, her face crumpling to force more tears out of her. "Do you think he will... call?"

"Which one?" Jack asked sarcastically. "The legal one? Or the other contender? It’s obviously not me, since I’m already on the line."

"I think this is okay now." Fil sniffed hard, convinced she looked sorrowful enough. "I’ll call you once something happens. Take care on your flight."

"Just be sure that whatever this thing you’re expecting to happen isn’t something we do."

Fil picked up her phone and smirked. "That’s disgusting."

"Oh..." Jackson smirked playfully. "But I heard you like being dirty with me."

"I do." A subtle smile appeared on her face. "Anyway, I’ll go now. Bye."

"Mhm. Don’t miss me."

"I hope you don’t."

"You know I would."

With that being said, Fil ended the call and placed the phone down. She slowly set her eyes back to the mirror, her subtle smile disappearing. Instead, despite her slightly swollen eyelids, she looked sharp.

"Which one would it be?" she repeated under her breath. "Does it matter?"

She was expecting Vincent to call or suddenly knock on her doorstep. This was the first time she said such big words like break up; Vincent wouldn’t have seen it coming. Hence, he would surely act and ask for her forgiveness or give her some time if he used his brain. There was also a little chance Marcus would beat him to it. Marcus’s an opportunist. Either way, she had planned for both.

"I..." she whispered to herself, cupping her cheeks. "... don’t know you anymore."

For some reason, the deeper she delved into her revenge plans, the more unfamiliar she felt towards herself. In a way, it still scared her that she would lose herself in the process — or maybe she was already losing herself. However, it wasn’t enough to stop her.

Hurt people hurt people. It doesn’t justify her actions, but in a way, she understood why those words were put together. Because it was true; it was the reality. And someone had to soil their hands to stop this endless cycle.

"You’re not a hero, Fil," she told herself in a fragile attempt to keep her on track. "You’re going to do this so they can’t hurt you anymore or anyone on my side."

Fil nodded encouragingly, looking at herself in the mirror. She sniffed once more, wiping her tears. As she did, she heard a ping from her phone. Checking who it was, her lips curled up as she picked up the phone. She didn’t read it, but only put it on long press.

[From: Marcus

I heard what happened. Just checking in on you.]

"Attention, contemplation, conviction, and now... action," she chuckled.

"I wonder..." she trailed off, turning around to prop her back against the sink counter. "Did he tell Vincent to give me space and time? While having an ulterior motive of comforting a vulnerable woman?"

How magnificent.

"Vincent’s people truly never disappoint." She scoffed, eyes on the phone, smiling even more when another message from the same sender appeared. "Same disgusting pieces of trash."

[From: Marcus

I don’t know what exactly happened, but if you need an ear, I can lend you one.]

Fil didn’t put his message on read nor was she tempted to. She simply waited to see what would Marcus do. Just how far would he go to satisfy his craving?

After another two minutes, Marcus’s name was on the screen. It says;

[Incoming call]

"He called. I guess he’s really worried — or determined." Fil didn’t answer the call either, skipping her steps out of the bathroom and throwing herself in the bed. As she lay flat on her back, she raised her phone over her face.

The call ended.

"Would he call again?" she wondered for a second. "Of course not. Because if he did, that would make it too obvious."

Just like her guess, Marcus didn’t call anymore. He didn’t even send another message. Hence, after waiting for another three minutes since the call didn’t push through, she finally opened his messages.

[To: Marcus

I’m alright.]

[From: Marcus

Are you sure?]

[To: Marcus

Yes.]

There was a moment of silence in the chat log as he put her on read for a moment. When he replied, all he said was;

[From: Marcus

Alright. Let me know if there’s something I can help you with.]

"Actually, there is," she nodded, wondering what sort of face he was making at the moment.

Was he wearing a look of worry? Excitement? Perhaps, anxiousness?

This time, Fil waited for five minutes to message him again.

[To: Marcus

That ice cream was really good. I forgot the name of the store, so I can’t search for it online. Do you know if they deliver at this hour?]

Fil rolled on her stomach while waiting for his response.

[From: Marcus

They don’t.]

[To: Marcus

It sucks people have to sleep.]

[From: Marcus

But I can.]

Her brows rose with genuine curiosity. Three seconds later, his name was on her screen again because he got tired of texting. This time, she answered.

"The ice cream will melt," was the first thing he said. "You might want to go outside and pick it up."

Fil slowly pushed herself to sit up, brows furrowed. "You’re downstairs?" she asked in disbelief.

Although she assumed Marcus might want to console her in person, she didn’t bet on it too much. After all, he wouldn’t make such a bold move so soon, right? But she guessed she was wrong. Speechless, Fil marched toward the door and to the open corridor. She looked over the railing, only to see Marcus standing outside the building with a plastic bag in his hand.
