Chapter 59: That was a scary thought.

The apartment building Fil was living in wasn’t in the slums, nor was it situated in the middle of the city where the inflation was high. It was the typical middle-class apartment that had enough security for its tenants. She never questioned the security in this place until a week ago when Jackson and a lot of people intruded into her place. And then, now.

"How did you get in?" Fil was baffled, finding herself seated at the dining table while the intruder acted at home. Jackson was carrying the pot from the kitchen to the table, grinning at her playfully.

"I asked the landlord."

"The landlord..." she scoffed. "And she gave the key to you?"

"I told her I’m your mistress and that we’re being discreet about it."

"..." Fil’s heart sank as her expression instantly went blank. She raised her fist and pounded it against her chest slowly with a little bit of force. "I’m a dog. She’ll think I’m a dog."

Jackson chuckled, taking out his mittens and placing them on the table as he sat down. "Like a bitch?"

Fil glared at him, making him raise his hands in surrender.

"You really said that?" she asked, leaning over the table. "Say, you’re joking, right?"

"Oh, sweetheart, did you think I was serious?"

"Good riddance."

"I told her we’re going out and that I’m going to propose. I even told her there’s no way I’m the third party. She believed me. How can she not? With this face, I’m too good-looking to be the third party."

"..." Fil looked at him blankly, rendered speechless.

"Here it is." Jack scooped a bowlful of soup, sliding it in front of her. "Eat."

"I don’t know if I should question the security here or fix it by giving you a spare key." Fil sighed, picking up the spoon to feed herself. As soon as the broth exploded in her mouth, she looked up at him in surprise. "Did you... cook this?"

"Sweetheart, I’m a total package." He smiled coquettishly. "And since I’m selling myself to you, I have to showcase all my talents."

Fil was rendered speechless once again, unable to figure out what to tell him. Thus, instead of focusing on the food, she had to focus on what was important.

"Next time, can you please let me know if you’re coming?" she sighed. "I thought someone broke into my house."

"But I knocked," he replied, causing her to furrow her brows.

It took her a few seconds to remember that time she told him how she didn’t like him trespassing in her place. That time, he told her he would knock.

"Oh, god." Fil pinched the bridge of her nose, face twitching. "That’s not what I thought it was."

When she peeked at him, she pursed her lips into a thin line. Jackson was still enjoying the soup he made, looking back at her innocently.

"This is a felony," she remarked, only to see him shrug nonchalantly. "How did you know I want to eat?"

"Sweetheart, eating at parties is rare."

"Especially with those clothes. You won’t like to look bloated."

Fil let out a deep exhale, taking another spoonful to her mouth. It was true she didn’t eat a lot during dinner because she didn’t want to look bloated. Not that she had any appetite.

"When did you arrive?" she asked out of plain curiosity. "I thought you’d be out of the country until next week?"

"I said I might come back earlier than expected."

"You said that...?" she muttered, recalling he did mention that. "I thought you were joking."

"I’m glad I wasn’t joking." Jackson pulled out his phone, showing her the picture she sent him hours ago. "Looks like a fun invitation for me."

"It’s not an invitation." She lowered her head, looking away from him. "I just thought if I’m going to that party and show up almost naked in front of those good-for-nothings, I might as well show you first. Obviously, you don’t need to since you already saw me fit it in."

His brows elevated as she explained, smirking in amusement. "Eat well, sweetheart. It’s the weekend."

"Huh?"

"We have an entire weekend to have fun." He grinned, leaving her with a parted mouth. "You said I can redeem a kiss, right?"

"..."

"I was too excited. So, I rushed everything."

Fil opened and closed her mouth, but then, her voice wouldn’t come out of her throat. All she could do was scratch her temple, praying this was his mirage.

"Also, those foods in the fridge, can I have them?" he continued, pointing his thumb over his shoulder. "I think the side dish will go well with this soup."

"You mean... those side dishes?" she stuttered, and he nodded. "No, they won’t."

"They won’t?"

"Mhm."

"How do you know that?"

"I just know," Fil laughed awkwardly. "Also, they smell bad. The place will smell if you take them out."

Jackson tilted his head to the side. "Does it smell like a dead body?"

"No?" she hadn’t even smelled a dead body, but she knew it wouldn’t smell like that.

"Then, that’s fine." Jackson pushed himself away from the table. "I’ll get it. If you don’t want to eat it, then don’t."

Fil tried to stop him, but for some reason, her throat wasn’t listening to her. All she could do was watch him walk back to the kitchen, check the fridge, and take out a few Tupperware. The pungent scent of fermented vegetables immediately wafted through her nostrils, but Jackson even sniffed it closer.

"Mhm. I knew it." He smiled in amusement. "This is the one I’ve been smelling since coming here."

When Jackson returned to the table with the rest of the side dishes, Fil watched him excitedly open them one by one. She watched him quietly, almost in disbelief at how unbothered he was. If anything, he looked as though he had been eyeing them for a long time and now’s his chance to eat them.

’Vincent can’t even stand the smell and has to fake a smile whenever a dish like this is served on the table for his grandfather,’she thought. ’But this guy... I think he will get along well with Mom.’

Fil jolted at the sudden thought that crossed her mind. ’What the hell was I thinking?! Oh, goodness. That was a scary thought.’
