Chapter 48: Scandal

[Marianne of DIK Integrated News was spotted coming out of a nightclub with the son of Hale Construction CEO.]

[Marianne and son of Hale Construction CEO DATING?!]

Those were only a few among countless headlines Vincent and Marianne were making in the entertainment section. Photos of the two were released, but one stood out. It was the photo of Marianne holding on Vincent’s arm as the latter was assisting her. His blazer was over her shoulder and by the looks of it, it was understandable how all these articles jumped to conclusion.

Fil read the articles during her free time. Although she was still able to perform well during the meeting and meet what needed to be done, she found herself invested in these articles.

"Fil, you’ve been reading those articles since forever." Elise pushed herself away from her desk, stretching her neck to take a peek at the article Fil was reading. "All social media platforms had been so lively since this dating rumor came out."

"Well, Marianne is very popular," Fil replied, snapping her attention to Elise. "Did you finish the one I asked you to draft?"

"Almost." Elise pouted. "Can you give me five minutes to rest? I really feel like withering away if I don’t take a moment to breathe."

"Rest if you need to, but I still need the file at the end of the day."

"Yes, ma’am!" Elise saluted and then hurriedly dragged her chair closer. "So? Do you think they suit each other?"

Fil raised her brows as she slowly set her eyes on her monitor. "Well, they both look good."

"Wow... surely, that woman has it all, huh?" Elise awed. "For a news anchor, she’s more popular than other actresses. From what I heard, she also came from a well-off family. And now, she’s dating one of the most sought-after bachelors in the country. Hale Construction, that’s a big company."

Elise’s twinkling eyes suddenly disappeared as she gasped. "Wait. Didn’t you recommend the Hale Construction to be part of the Solana Project?"

"I did."

"Wow." Her eyes lit up. "Does that mean we might get a chance to see Marianne? I mean, if the dating is true, we have a chance to confirm if they’re dating. Don’t worry. I won’t tattle."

Fil squinted her eyes slightly, twisting her body to face Elise squarely. "Elise, do you like Marianne?"

"Well, she’s pretty. I can’t say I don’t like her or I like her, but she has a clean record." Elise shrugged. "Moreover, it would be nice to meet celebrities now and then. Though I can reassure you, you’re the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen in my life! Fil, why don’t you become a celebrity?"

"How about my job?"

"Well..." Elise cleared her throat, realizing Fil loved her job so much. "I guess you’ll be the celebrity engineer in here."

"Haha." Fil chuckled, looking back at the screen in front of her. "You know Elise, I just learned that people can look pretty on the outside so easily. But it takes more than skincare and makeup and a change of wardrobe to cover up a person’s heart."

"Huh?"

"All I’m saying is being pretty isn’t bad, but a person’s heart is the most important." Fil smacked her lips and glanced at her phone on the side of her desk. She put it on silent all day, ignoring the messages and missed calls she had been getting since morning.

"Anyway, I think you’ve rested enough." Fil reached for her phone and faced Elise. "Finish the task."

"Are you finished?" Elise pouted. "Where are you going?"

"Liv already reviewed my report. I’m basically done for the day if only I check your work." She patted Elise’s shoulder mildly. "No pressure, though. I can wait. If anyone looks for me, tell them I stepped out for a bit."

"Fine..." Elise languidly dragged herself back to her table, sporting an ugly frown, as she looked at the draft. "She says no pressure, but I feel even more pressured to keep her here. Fine, I’ll finish it — but first, coffee!"

12 missed calls from Vincent and 7 from Marianne.

That was how many times those two tried to reach her since the news broke out. Did they think Fil had so much free time in the day? It wasn’t just missed calls, but both of them also bombarded her with messages.

[From: Vincent

Fil, it’s not true! I swear to god none of that is true! Call me once you get my messages.]

[From: Vincent

I will never do that to you. Seriously. This is so stressful. Call me.]

[From: Vincent

Fil, call me when you receive my messages, okay? I’ll explain what happened.]

Fil didn’t waste more brain cells in reading the rest of his messages. It was obvious he was anxious, waiting for Fil to answer. She then checked a few messages from her dearest best friend.

[From: Marianne

Fil, it’s not what you think it is. I don’t know how the reporters got the idea, but you know it’s not true. It’s so annoying.]

[From: Marianne

Vincent just helped me because I got too many drinks. If I had known this would happen, I would’ve just gone home alone. It doesn’t matter how wasted I am; I am responsible for my actions. I know it’s my fault for drinking and I’m sorry. I didn’t want this misunderstanding. You’re my best friend.]

[From: Marianne

Let me know if you’re free later. I’ll pick you up or maybe just meet me. I’ll explain everything in detail later. Just hear me out and give us a chance, okay?]

"What’s the fuss?" Fil muttered, resting her hand on the railing of the rooftop. "I read most of the articles about them. They weren’t being criticized."

A successful news anchor and the handsome director of Hale Construction. They looked so perfect together. Both were good-looking, had successful careers, and clean track records. This dating rumor simply added more glamour to their names.

"It was a beautiful love story..." she whispered, eyes drooping. "... without me in it."

The corner of her lips curled up subtly. "Sadly, I am in it and so, it’s not a beautiful love story that people call a rumor, but a scandal that could ruin their careers." A glint flickered across her eyes as she thought of a plan. She gazed down at her phone, shifting to her chat logs with Vincent.

[To: Vincent

Today is Marcus’s party, right? Let’s talk there.]

She then sent Marianne a message.

[To: Marianne

Let’s talk at Marcus’s party. I know you’d be there.]
