The Devil's Good Girl -
Chapter 49: Plus one
Chapter 49: Plus one
"Here are the files. I looked through them three times, but let me know if there’s something I missed." Elise wiggled her brows proudly, sliding the flash drive onto Fil’s desk.
Fil looked up at her and smiled. "I thought I was going to stay for the entire night here."
"Oh, come on. How can I do that to you?" Elise pouted as she grabbed her things. "I don’t have the heart to make you suffer. And definitely, I’m too scared that the boss will kill me for giving you a hard time."
Fil chuckled, watching Elise arrange her desk before leaving.
"Uhm, Elise?" she called, earning Elise’s attention. "Are you going home now?"
"Uh... yes, I guess?"
"You don’t have plans for tonight?"
Elise pondered while rubbing her chin. Her lips curved down, looking at Fil somberly.
"Fil, I just realized I no longer have control over my life." Tears immediately formed in the corner of her pretty eyes. "I don’t have a work-life balance anymore! It’s the weekend, but I don’t even have plans. Am I wasting my youth?"
"Haha. Want to come with me?"
"Huh?" the tears coating Elise’s eyes instantly changed into a twinkle. "Are you going to treat me out?"
"Not a treat per se... but didn’t you say it would be nice to see celebrities now and then?" Fil smiled innocently while Elise furrowed her brows. "My fiance’s friend is throwing a party tonight. You might see one or two celebrities."
"What?" Elise gasped, scooting over to Fil’s side. "Fil, is your fiance rich?"
"What do you mean by rich?"
"Rich! Like wealthy!"
"Oh, that’s what you meant," Fil chuckled, thinking if the question was if Vincent was rich in lies and crap. The answer to that was the same. "Well, he lives comfortably."
"Oh, goodness. Fil, this is the first time you’d introduce your fiance to me. I mean, you mentioned before that you’ve been together for a long time. And that he’s your childhood crush too! Yet, we never see him." A tinge of excitement and intrigue laced Elise’s tone, moving closer to Fil. "Is this the reason? Don’t tell me he’s a celebrity?"
"He makes it to the entertainment section sometimes." Fil shrugged, earning another gasp from Elise.
"Seriously? He’s a big shot?"
Fil only smiled brightly in turn. "So, do you want to tag along with me?"
"Of course!" Elise nodded profusely. "Fil, do you think I can be a celebrity too?"
"I don’t understand the fuss about fame, but if you want to, I’m sure you can."
"Ehh... I’m just kidding." Elise raised her fingers, showing her finger hearts. "Wherever you are, I’ll be there."
"Then, I’ll just get ready." Fil reached for the flash drive and arranged her things. Meanwhile, Elise hurriedly went back to her desk to clear it. Just as the girls finished, a knock suddenly interrupted them.
"You girls going home now?"
Elise and Fil slowly gazed up in front of them, only to see Kenzo looking at them with genuine curiosity.
"Why are you still here?" asked Fil. "I thought you left early?"
"My parents set me up on another blind date." Kenzo grinned. "After that disastrous blind date last night, I don’t think I have the energy. So, I told them I’m working late."
"Goodness. You’ve been on blind dates for the entire week, but all of them end up a disaster." Elise shook her head.
Kenzo’s ’night’ activities were quite public among them because Oliver couldn’t stop running his mouth. Moreover, they were all rooting for Kenzo to find a partner in life in hopes that would make him a more patient person. The man might be kind most of the time, but whenever it was work, he could be very scary.
"It’s not like I am the one arranging the blind dates. I’m being forced to, and my need to rebel just skyrockets," he humored. "So, going home now?"
"Nope!" Elise proudly rose from her seat. "Fil is taking me out. She’ll introduce her fiance. She said his friend was throwing a party. I’ll be her plus one."
Kenzo furrowed his brows, shifting his eyes to Fil. "You’re taking her to Marcus’s party?"
"How did you know?" Fil asked. "Did he invite you?"
"Well, yes." Kenzo shrugged. "I dated his sister."
Elise pouted, darting her squinted eyes between them. It wasn’t like she wasn’t aware Kenzo and Fil were closed. That was because they went to the same university and even started working in the company at the same time. It just didn’t feel pleasant that these two felt like they knew something only they knew.
"I see." Fil nodded in understanding.
"His sister is one of the blind dates I had."
"And Marcus invited you? I thought your blind dates were a disaster?"
"They were." Kenzo smiled. "It’s why he invited me, even though we don’t like each other."
"Oh..." Fil’s lips formed into an ’o’ shape.
Marcus invited Kenzo for revenge.
"He’s petty," Kenzo humored. "Never grows up."
"Heh." Fil cleared her throat. "Anyway, we’ll go. Enjoy your weekend," Fil offered a smile, only to stop when Kenzo offered.
"Want me to drive you?"
"Kenzo, how?" Elise cocked her head to the side. "We can’t fit in your motorcycle."
"I brought my brother’s car." Kenzo smiled. "I didn’t want to, but I would be late this morning if I commute."
"What happened to your ride?"
"Maintenance." Kenzo shrugged. "So? Should I drive you girls to your next destination? I’m pretty much free since it’s the weekend."
"No, thanks. I have my truck with me," Fil refused politely.
"Sure!" Elise agreed almost immediately, looking at Fil with horror. "Fil, please, let’s not go with your truck."
"Why?" Fil frowned. "Is it because it’s not stylish enough?"
"No!" Elise shook her head. "It’s just that... it scares me. It looks like it will break down in the middle of the road."
Kenzo chuckled. "Fil, you’re the only one in here who isn’t worried about driving that truck."
"Well, how am I supposed to go to the office on Monday?" Fil wondered.
"I’ll drop you off and then pick up your truck," Kenzo offered as this wasn’t the first time he drove her truck. "Fil, if you’re still hesitating, just look at this poor little girl right here. She’s already pale even before riding in your truck. I can imagine her fainting once you start driving with her in it."
Fil glanced at Elise, seeing the latter holding her hands together as if begging her. "Fine," she said, snapping her eyes back to Kenzo. "Are you sure you’re okay with this?"
"My brother told me to return the car at around eight. But he didn’t say if it was morning or night."
"He will kill you," Fil remarked, shaking her head.
With that being said, the three of them headed down to the parking lot together. But just as they hitched in the car, Fil spoke.
"We have a make stop before the party," she said, earning Kenzo a look from the driver’s seat and Elise from the back seat.
"It’s a party," Fil grinned. "We can’t just go there without changing our clothes."
