The Devil's Good Girl
Chapter 47: Pretty privilege

Chapter 47: Pretty privilege

After being surrounded by countless good-looking people — Vincent’s circle — Fil was greatly aware of the definition of pretty privilege. People who could get more opportunities and favors just because of how attractive they were. She didn’t want to believe it in the past. One’s hard work and potential could get them just as far.

But right now, she couldn’t help but think that the thing called pretty privilege existed.

"Fil, do you need help? That looks like a lot of things for a woman to carry all alone."

Fil was standing in front of the elevator, turning her head to the man who offered her help. The man offered her a friendly smile, raising his brows as he reached for her stuff.

"Let me help," another man from the man’s side also joined, splitting the documents Fil was carrying to lessen the weight. "Oh, wow. This is heavy. How can you carry all of it?"

"I was raised on the farm," she smiled amicably. "I’m used to carrying weights."

"Wow." The man chuckled awkwardly. "That’s amazing."

Fil kept a smile, letting them carry her things just to test out something. She simply expressed her gratefulness for their help, barely keeping up with the conversation they were trying to make as they waited for the lift.

It had been four days since she came to work all dolled up. At first, it was mostly stares and attention she would get everywhere she went. The next day, she would get countless greetings. And now, the attention had evolved and some employees in the same company would always offer her help.

It was amusing in its own way.

Back then, whenever she told people she was raised on a farm, they immediately assume she was a country bumpkin. But now, they say it was amazing and even complimented the peaceful life in the countryside.

"Thank you," Fil expressed once she reached her department with the two male employees carrying her things. "I’m here now. I’ll take them from here."

"It’s alright. Let’s take it to your desk."

"Uh..."

"You sit over there, do you?" the man peeked into the office and looked back at her with a grin. "I’ll drop them off there."

With that being said, the two men carried her stuff to her desk. How did they even know that was her desk?

"Enjoying the privilege?"

Suddenly, Fil heard a voice come up from behind her. Looking back, she saw Kenzo smiling playfully. Fil let out a sigh, not saying anything to him as she looked ahead when the guys who helped her approached her once again.

"Thank you for your help," she said.

"Oh, it’s nothing. Whenever you need help, just tell me."

"I’ll keep that in mind. I hope I won’t be bothering you then."

"Of course." The man smiled even wider, idling for a moment before bidding her goodbye. The other man also bid her farewell, telling her the same thing.

Fil watched them walk away, noticing how the first man massaged his nape with the tip of his ear all red. ’Unbelievable.’

"Look at those guys..." Kenzo shook his head while clicking his tongue. "They’re acting like teenage boys getting their crush’s attention."

"I find them funny," she humored, casting him a quick look before walking to her desk.

Kenzo followed.

"That’s a surprise. I have mixed emotions about it." He stopped in front of her cubicle, resting his side against it as Fil arranged her desk. His eyes fell on the mountain of paper she was bringing to the office today.

"What are those?" he wondered. "As far as I know, you’re not bringing any work home."

"You mean these?" Fil placed her hands on the stack of documents. "They were my trash."

Deep lines appeared between his brows. "You’re throwing them away?" he asked, and she nodded. "Then why bring it here?"

"I was trying out a theory." A wide smile turned up on her face. "I didn’t want to believe in pretty privilege, but I guess it does exist. Society always judges us based on our looks before anything else. I’m not saying hard work won’t take us anywhere, it’s just that it’s a lot more convenient for pretty people like you. It sucks."

Kenzo shrugged, rendered speechless at the answer he got from her. He watched Fil carry the stack of papers so easily, putting them on the floor to shred later.

"I’m not pretty," he said after a moment, only to get a look from her. "Well, I was told I look good, but not as good-looking as those celebrities."

"Who gets tons of love letters back in college?" she humored. "I can’t even count how many confessions you had back then, and even when we started working here."

"I don’t get them now."

"Because they are now aware of what a prick of a person you are."

Kenzo chuckled. "I’ll take that as a compliment."

"Goodness." Fil shook her head mildly, clearing her desk to start her day. But after a minute, she paused and raised her brows. Looking up, she furrowed her brows upon seeing Kenzo was still there.

"What?" she asked, curiously. "Why aren’t you going back to your desk? We have a meeting with Liv in thirty minutes. What do you need from here? Please don’t tell me you want to help me too?"

"No." Kenzo smiled meekly. "I was just wondering if you were okay."

"Why wouldn’t I be okay?" she tilted her head to the side. "Did something happen?"

Kenzo shrugged as he smacked his lips. "I don’t know if something happened. I don’t even know if I should be telling you this, but go check the entertainment news. You might not be a big fan of showbiz, but I just thought it was the right thing to do."

Kenzo slowly placed the cup of coffee on her desk.

"You might need it," he said with a short smile before going back to his station.

Fil kept her brows creased, staring at him for a moment before taking her phone out. The worst she could think of was that something wrong happened in the Solana Project. The news should be in the business news, but it could still make it to the entertainment section. After all, reporters would write anything.

Her expectations were far different from Kenzo’s worry, though.

Fil glanced up, catching Kenzo glanced back at her. When she gazed down at her phone, her eyes landed on the blurry photo of a man and a woman going out of the nightclub.

Marianne and Vincent tied in a dating rumor.
