Chapter 44: I know what makes you happiest.

Chapter 44: I know what makes you happiest.

Just as Vincent said, they went to a drive-thru to grab something to eat. Fil, on the other hand, ate the ice cream in the passenger seat. She was hungry, and it wasn’t a lie. She didn’t eat well during her dinner with Jackson. How could she? She was the dinner. Although Jackson offered to eat after their long intimate session, she refused because she didn’t have the appetite.

On their way to her place, she couldn’t help but glance at the driver’s seat.

’Who would have thought he could talk so much?’ she wondered, almost flabbergasted at how Vincent kept talking from the moment they entered the car until now. ’He usually gives me the silent treatment, saying he was too tired and had no energy to talk.’

Fil slowly set her eyes to the window. ’I’m so sleepy.’

"By the way, Marcus is throwing a party and is inviting us." Vincent shifted the topic when he got a short hum from her as a response. "It’s in this weekend. Want to come?"

"Marcus?" Fil slowly looked back at him. "I’ll check my schedule."

Vincent frowned, casting her a quick look. "Why?"

"I told you, our company has a very important project." Fil leaned back, hugging herself as she placed the ice cream on the placeholder. "We’ll handle the most projects in the redevelopment of Cobalt Heights."

"What?" Vincent gasped, giving her another disbelief look.

Fil chuckled airily, snapping her eyes back to him. "I told you it was important."

"So that man..."

"He’s the owner of the Solana International Hotel and Resorts." Her lips stretched. "He’s a very big fish. So, I have to clear my schedule for him."

For a moment, this news astounded Vincent. He was rendered speechless, as this was very big in the industry they were in.

"Why are you... the one meeting him?" he asked out of plain curiosity.

"Because I’m the lead engineer of the project."

This time, Vincent pulled over to the side of the road and looked at her in surprise. Fil grinned from ear to ear.

"Fil!" he gasped. "Why — I mean, I know you’re an amazing engineer. But shouldn’t this be handled by your superiors?"

"Well, my boss gave it to me."

"Why?"

Fil shrugged; that was also something she wanted to know. However, she was certain Olivia’s decision was something she did on her own.

"She just said I’m the perfect person who fits the project," she said, giving the same answer Olivia gave her. "Either way, it’s good news for me. This project will be good in my portfolio. It will put my name out there, and..."

Vincent’s smile remained until it slowly faded bit by bit. He listened to her ramblings, and he knew that her career would take off to the moon even before this project ended. If that happened, Fil would make it to the list of the most successful engineers. The most sought-after engineer.

If that happened...

"And also..." Fil trailed off as she furrowed her brows. "Are you okay?"

"Huh?"

"Vincent, are you not happy with where my career is heading?" she asked, cocking her head to the side.

"What? Of course, not!" He laughed awkwardly, shifting the gear to get back on the road. "Of course, I am happy for you."

"Then what’s with the tone?"

"Well." He cleared his throat. "I was just thinking, once we get married, how can we have children if you’d be too busy?"

Fil blinked and blinked, looking at him blankly. "You want me to stay home once we get married?"

"No, I mean... I just thought that’s what you want," he said. "It’s the reason I worked this hard, so you won’t have to lift a finger. The project hasn’t started yet, but you’re already too busy and have so many things to do. So I was a little worried."

Despite her repulsion at his statement, Fil forced a smile. It wasn’t that she had problems with stay-at-home parents, but it was puzzling how it sounded more like he was just doing so, so she became dependent on him.

"You don’t have to worry," she said, sporting the most beautiful smile she could. "The wedding date isn’t even decided yet. Let’s talk about these things once everything is set."

Vincent glanced at her, only to see her smiling so beautifully. He rocked his head, setting his eyes back on the road.

"Don’t be like that, Vin." Fil pouted playfully. "I recommended Hale Construction as part of the suppliers. I didn’t want to tell you since it hasn’t been approved yet, but I’ve put a good word for you."

"Really?"

"Mhm!" she hummed, nodding enthusiastically. "Don’t be too happy, though. Until I hear a word and you sign the contract, don’t tell anyone."

Vincent looked at her once more, forgetting his initial worries upon hearing this news. "Fil! You’re such an angel, my love!"

My love? Ew.

"Don’t thank me yet." Fil leaned back comfortably. "I told you. I just recommended your company, but there’s no telling if the firm approves it. After all, we already had partners."

"Your recommendation is enough." He grinned excitedly. "The redevelopment is a huge project. Two or three construction companies aren’t enough to supply the demand. Even if we were able to supply just one material, it would be very helpful."

Fil observed Vincent with a slight smile. "You look really happy."

"Of course I am!" His mouth stretched. "You know how much I’ve eyed the redevelopment in Cobalt Heights. The competition there was fierce — I told you about it."

"You didn’t."

"Huh?" Deep lines appeared between his brows, confused.

"You never mentioned it to me," she repeated, smiling. "I only thought of you because you might find it interesting, but you never told me you’ve been eyeing the development in that area."

"Really?" Vincent furrowed his brows, only to realize he mentioned it to someone else. He laughed awkwardly. "I didn’t? I think I did. Not really sure now since I’ve been busy having meetings here and there. Wow! My memory is a little messed up, isn’t it? Well, if I didn’t tell you about it, that only makes you the only person who knows me the best!"

Fil’s eyelids drooped, looking away from him as she didn’t need to see more.

He was lying.

He told someone, but not her. Probably while he was lying naked with a woman in his arms, he kept rumbling about it.

"Fil?" he called worriedly as she stayed quiet. "Are you upset again?"

"No." She smiled, looking back at him once again. "It’s just that I agree with you. I know you the best. I know what makes you happiest." — at the same time, she knew how to make him the most miserable.
