Chapter 45: Sweet and spicy

Chapter 45: Sweet and spicy

After a torturous half-hour trip home, Fil felt relief when she saw her apartment building. Who would have thought being with the man she used to love so much could be so insufferable? She had to listen to his every lie and pretend she believed all of them.

It was a turn-off.

"Finally," she whispered as she unbuckled her seatbelt. "Thanks for the ride."

Fil didn’t feel the need to idle as she was too tired for the day. All she wanted was to wash herself and crash onto her bed. It was a long day, and spending some time with Vincent didn’t help.

"Wait, Fil."

Just as Fil stepped out of the front passenger seat, she rolled her eyes. She wanted to pretend she didn’t hear him and so she continued. However, Vincent also went out, which meant she had to stay a little longer.

"Let me walk you to your unit," he offered, jogging around the front to her. He reached for her stuff, only for Fil to move them away.

"It’s okay, Vin," she said with a smile. "I can walk myself home. I mean, my place is just over there. What else can happen, right?"

"But —"

"Thank you for taking me home, but I’m really tired." Fil let out an apologetic smile. "Also, it’s a little late. You should go home. I’d be too worried if you go home alone. You didn’t have your driver with you."

Vincent wanted to argue, but in the end, he could only stare at her. "Fine," he said. "I’ll watch you from here then."

’You don’t have to,’ was what she wanted to say, but she realized it would only prolong this conversation. Thus, she smiled and nodded in understanding.

With that being said, Fil slowly turned on her heel. As soon as she turned her back on him, the smile on her face disappeared without a trace.

’Carry my things? Walk me to my apartment?’she mentally scoffed. ’What a quick change from the other night.’

Normally, Vincent wouldn’t offer help to carry her things. But now, he wasn’t even showing any sign that he wanted to leave her alone. Just how much more would this man prove to her how blinded and foolish she was for not seeing how much of a jerk and a clown he was?

’He’s giving me more and more reason to dump him, but even more reason to hurt him.’

"Hey, Fil!"

"Ugh, god." Fil rolled her eyes, stopping in her tracks to look back. "What now?"

Vincent smiled from ear to ear, jogging to her, and stopped in front of her. Seeing his action, Fil couldn’t help but arch a brow. But before she could react, Vincent suddenly pulled her into his embrace.

"I know I said something stupid earlier," he said, tightening his embrace and resting his chin on her shoulder. "I’m really sorry about that. It was silly. You would never do that to me."

His smile reached his ears, only to furrow his brows as he sniffed. This smell...

"It’s okay." Fil carefully pushed him away, creating distance while looking into his eyes. "You’ve been working hard, so I can’t blame you. Don’t beat yourself because of it. It was upsetting, but I understand."

"Thank you." His smile returned, not dwelling on the faint scent lingering in her.

"I’ll go now," she said and, without waiting for his reply, she turned around. Her face twitched when he grabbed her wrist.

"Wait," he said, making her look back at her. Vincent smiled lovingly, taking a step forward and planting a kiss on her forehead. "Good night, Fil. Have a sweet dream."

Fil lowered her gaze as she felt his lips on her forehead.

"A sweet dream, huh?" she murmured, recalling that all she had every time she slept was a nightmare. And the cause of that nightmare was him.

Fil smiled as she slowly gazed up to meet his eyes. "Good night." And with that being said, she retrieved her hand from him and walked away. This time, she wished there were no more interruptions. Fil could only sigh in relief when she reached her apartment unit and went inside.

Vincent stayed in his spot even after Fil disappeared from his line of sight. He looked up, catching her walking through the open corridor and entering her unit. A wide smile turned up on his face.

"She’s really pretty even from far away," he muttered, hearing his heart skipping beats at the different expressions she wore all this time. Her smile was sweet and enchanting, but her frown and glares were also heart-melting. A mix of sweet and spicy.

"What did get into her that she started dressing up?" he wondered, smacking his lips as he turned around to leave. But just as he took three steps, deep lines appeared between his brows.

"Did she start wearing perfumes?" he murmured, looking back to Fil’s apartment unit.

After being with her for a long time, he knew Fil never wore perfume. If anything, she just put on some baby cologne. Although he got a whiff of the same baby cologne, there was another distinct scene mixed with it. The other scent was faint, but it smelled like a man.

"Nah... impossible." He shook his head, chuckling. "She worked with many guys in the office. They probably got a little too close to her."

Vincent tried to get rid of the thought. However, when he sat in the driver’s seat, he paused.

"Too close to her," he repeated under his breath, remembering how Fil dressed up today. "If she went to work looking like that... hah. Those bastards. Did they know she’s engaged?"

He ground his teeth, imagining the looks Fil got in her company. Her beauty and confidence mesmerized Vincent, who was her fiance. What more other men?

"Tch." He clicked his tongue, about to go home when a call came through the center console of the car. His brow arched, seeing the name of the caller on the screen.

Marianne.

"Why is she calling me? She knew I’d be with Fil." He wondered to himself, hesitating to answer. For some reason, Vincent glanced at the apartment building before he decided to answer.

"Marianne, why are you..."

"Vincent..." Marianne sniffled, making him trail off. "I... *hic* what should I do?"

"Marianne, are you drunk? Nevermind. Where are you?" he panicked, moving the gearshift and sped away. "Stay where you are. I’ll be right there."
