Chapter 43: You look very pretty, Fil.

"Vin!" Fil called, smiling from ear to ear. "What are you doing here?"

"Huh?" Vincent scoffed, studying the smile that appeared on her face. "What am I doing here? I’m here because you stood me up. We were supposed to have dinner together. Who is that guy?"

Deep lines appeared between her brows. "Who?"

"That guy, Fil. Who is he?" He stepped closer. "The reason you stood me up. Who is that guy?"

"Vincent. He’s our client." Fil frowned deeply. "Are you accusing me of cheating?"

Vincent’s breath hitched, and his neck turned a little taut. He studied her face and was taken aback at how she looked so mesmerizing up close. She was pretty — very pretty. Even when she was frowning, it could melt a man’s heart.

"I can’t believe you," she sulked, looking at him in dismay. "Sorry, okay? I was in a hurry and didn’t pay attention to where we were supposed to dine. That man is a client of ours; a very important client at the moment. So when he called regarding his concerns about the project, I had to meet him."

Her frown deepened, clicking her tongue in irritation. "Vincent, I can’t believe you’d accuse me of that. I never did this to you because I had faith in you even if you were miles away," — but he chose to break that over and over and over.

"I’m sorry for not making it to our date because of work, but that’s the only thing I will apologize for," she added with a huff. "If you’re done, I’m going home. It was a long day and I just want to sleep."

With that being said, Fil turned on her heel to walk away. She scoffed one more time, shaking her head in disbelief before taking a step. Her tracks, however, stopped when a hand grabbed her wrist.

"I’m... I’m sorry," Vincent breathed out, waking back to his senses. "I don’t know what got into me. I’m sorry."

Fil pressed her lips into a thin line, turning around to face him squarely. She didn’t say anything for several seconds and simply stared at him. Listening to his apologies reminded her of herself; how she would apologize to him once he succeeded in gaslighting her. It wasn’t like Fil was an expert in revenge. She knew nothing about it. She was simply copying what Vincent would do in such situations, and it was working.

’How can you... sleep at night?’ she wondered, observing him while he explained his side of the story. ’While standing in this spot, watching me try to salvage the relationship... I wonder what you were thinking every time.’

Was he mentally laughing while she would blindly apologize for misunderstanding? Did he feel good?

Fil didn’t want to compare her situation with him. Although they were the same, she had resorted to these vile methods because of what he had done. But Fil didn’t do anything as vile as cheating before that. Therefore, she would never understand the mere thought of the satisfaction Vincent had whenever she apologized for something she shouldn’t have.

"But that’s not the point," Vincent sighed heavily. "I’m sorry. I just don’t know what got me to jump to that ridiculous conclusion. It’s probably because of the company and the upcoming events. I know you wouldn’t do that to me."

’That’s what I also said when I started having hunches,’ she replied mentally. ’You wouldn’t do that to me... but you did.’

A deep exhale slipped past her nostrils, nodding. "Fine. I’ll let this pass, just this once."

"Thanks." He smiled, sliding his hands to hold hers. "Did you eat?"

Fil glanced down at her hand that was within his grip. Just how often had he held her hand in the past? She couldn’t remember. Maybe during the early stages of their relationship. However, now that she thought about it, Vincent would only hold her hand whenever he messed things up and apologize. But not in public.

"How can I possibly eat during an important meeting?" she replied, pulling her hand from his grip. "I’m tired. I’ll go home."

Vincent cleared his throat and didn’t dwell on how she pulled her hand from him. He jogged to her side, smiling brightly.

"Let me drive you home!" he offered enthusiastically. "I’ll just ask someone to drive your truck home."

Fil arched a brow, about to refuse when she felt her knees wobble. She glanced down momentarily, feeling how her legs shook after all that nonstop exercise.

’How can he have so much strength and energy? If I didn’t tap out, he would want more,’ she thought, offering Vincent a short smile. "Fine."

"Great! Let’s go." Vincent took her hand once more.

Fil didn’t take a step immediately, channeling all her strength to her legs for them to move.

"Something wrong, Fil?"

"No. Let me hold on to you." She swiftly snatched her hand from his grip and clasped his arm. "I had a lot of legwork to do today, so my legs are almost giving up on me."

Vincent arched a brow and glanced down at her footwear. "You were wearing those?"

"It’s a bad decision, isn’t it?" she humored, taking baby steps to the parking space where his car was.

Fortunately, Vincent didn’t think much about her temporary limping. All she had to say was she did some legwork, and he believed her. Not knowing the legwork she was referring to was spreading them or standing on her toes for a better position.

As Fil did her best to keep walking in a straight line, Vincent couldn’t help but cast her a look. Awe lingered in his eyes, amazed at how beautiful and sophisticated his fiancee appeared. It wasn’t like she was ugly in his eyes. He had always known Fil was beautiful, but just too boring compared to Marianne.

"You look very pretty, Fil," he commented, earning a look from her. The side of his mouth stretched as his eyes softened. "You said you hadn’t eaten during the meeting? Should we eat some drive-thru? Let’s get you your favorite ice cream."

Fil held her breath, noticing the admiration in his eyes. It had been a very long time since those eyes shone like this whenever he looked at her. She almost couldn’t remember the last time. But now, just because she dressed up a little, he was acting like a proper boyfriend?

’Hah...’she mentally scoffed. ’How insulting.’
