Chapter 199: Don’t make me hate you
"You shouldn’t have gotten too close, Filomena. But you did, and it’s your fault for touching a part of me you shouldn’t have. Take responsibility because I’m not letting you shred my heart just as much as you pleased. I’m not Vincent and I won’t chase after you. I’ll make you come to me and beg me on your knees."
Fil balled her hands into a tight fist, knowing full well he had decided. Again, Fil felt choked and trapped. It was nauseating. This was what she felt three months ago. However, putting that aside, Fil had to keep a level head.
Marcus smirked maliciously as an unforgiving glint flickered across his eyes. "Do you know how I planned to do it? I’ll ask Elise’s hand and marry her. On our wedding night, I’ll purposely call out your name, which will be the start of her nightmare. I’ll keep taking other women home, let her hear their moans, and then apologize to her until she forgives me. And I’ll do it again."
"By the time she asks for a divorce, she’ll hate you just as much as she hates me," he added with a smug look on his face. "I don’t care, but I’m sure you care."
"You’ve lost your mind, Marcus," she hissed, grabbing his arm and dragging him to the kitchen. The latter raised his brows, letting her drag him around.
Fil simply turned off the stove and then continued to drag him back to the living area. She picked up his coat and keys, tossing it to him. She only picked up her things, still clinging to him as they put on their shoes.
"Are you going to take me home?" he joked as he put his shoes on, only to receive a glare from her.
"You’re not sleeping here. Come on." Fil grabbed his arms and pulled him up. She was unsure if that was her strength alone, or if he was just letting her drag her around. It didn’t matter, though. She dragged him with her until she locked the door and they were out of the apartment.
Marcus was smiling as if he didn’t mind if he wouldn’t have to stay over. "I’ll take you home?"
"Do you seriously think I’d ride with you after everything you just said now?"
"But that’s make it more reassuring," he retorted. "I like you, Fil, so much so that I could hurt others, but not you."
"Hurting Elise will hurt me."
"But not as much as her pain. I don’t want to hurt you, but I didn’t say I would let you hurt me too. I’m no martyr." He shook his head, taking a step closer to her. He lowered his head, holding her shoulders gently. "I know what I am doing is a little extreme for your taste, but you left me without a word. Anne kept her mouth shut, so I had no choice. I missed you, Filomena."
"What do you want, Marcus?"
"A continuation of our arrangement." His answer was quick, staring deep into her eyes. "Like I said, you got too close, Fil."
He cupped her face and smiled gently. "Don’t be mad anymore, hmm? I’ll break up with her if that is what you want, but I need reassurance."
Saying no and entering defense mode was easy, but Fil didn’t want to face heavy consequences. Not when Marcus had Elise as his hostage. Hence, even when his touch made her sick, she barely brushed it away.
"I’m leaving in a week," she whispered, shaking her head mildly. "Don’t tell me you want me to stop or put a halt in my career just to be with you?"
"I’m not Vincent. Making you stop your career and become a housewife isn’t in my plans. Being career-driven is one of your charms, and I think keeping you locked in a home is depriving the world of one of the best minds." He laughed, slipping his fingers between the gaps of her fingers. "I can go wherever you are. You don’t have to stop anything for me, but allow me to be with you whenever I want."
His smile broadened. "Now, is that enough reassurance so I could drive you home? I promise to behave."
"I’m speechless," she scoffed, snatching her hand away from him and walking out of him.

In the end, Fil still rode with Marcus as the man wouldn’t stop bugging her. To keep him at bay, she had to make him believe she was reconsidering. But when she reached home, she felt her knees wobble, and she collapsed in the entryway.
[You’ve gotten too close, Filomena.]
[You touched a part of me you shouldn’t have.]
[This is your fault. Take responsibility.]
Fil let out a scoff, clasping her chest as she could barely breathe short breaths. She thought since she fled, things would quiet down. She got too complacent because Marianne stopped with her scheming spree. Who would have thought Marcus wouldn’t stop, but instead, had been waiting for her return?
"I shouldn’t have gone out with him," she whispered, recalling how she lured Marcus to like her in the past. Her expression turned sour at the thought.
Back then, making Marcus fall in love with her was all she wanted as part of her revenge. This was what she wanted, for him to want her more than anything else. She succeeded in that. But alas, she no longer wanted revenge.
She simply wanted to move on and put everything behind her. Who would have thought that her actions before she chose to run away were also sabotaging her from moving forward?
Fil pinched the bridge of her nose, regaining her strength to go inside her home. As she did, she opened her phone and pursed her lips into a thin line. Calling Jackson was her first instinct, but for some reason, she didn’t. Instead, Fil went to get her spare phone.
When she left, she changed her number and used a different number. She kept her old phone off. Turning it on after months, Fil saw countless messages from different people. There was also a missed call from both Marcus and Vincent. Fil ignored everything else, checking the messages Marcus left her.
His last message was,
[From: Marcus
I don’t know which hurts me more: missing you or getting ignored by you. Don’t make me hate you, Filomena.]
