The Devil's Good Girl -
Chapter 200: Karma
Chapter 200: Karma
After three months of peaceful nights, Fil barely slept through the night. She kept tossing and turning on the bed and before she knew it, it was already morning. Fil sat up groggily, ruffling her hair in distress.
"Six more days..." she muttered, batting her eyes open. "I have to endure these six days and make him stop."
A part of her regretted not kicking the man’s testicle to make him stop his nonsense. The other part of her consoled and told her holding back was the best decision she made last night. Marcus had lost it for sure. Who knew what he would do to Elise if Fil pushed him further to the edge?
"I will tell her today," she told herself, huffing. "I have to."
Fil took a deep breath, cheering herself to do what she should do. She felt bad for Elise because the latter seemed to like Marcus a lot, but she didn’t deserve such a superficial relationship. Elise deserved more than this.
With that thought in mind, Fil readied herself for the day.

"Good morning," Fil greeted as soon as she sat down. "You’re early for someone who has a hangover."
Elise, who was leaning on her desk, cast her a look. "Hehe. I feel much better now, thanks to you."
"I didn’t do much."
"The hangover soup and medicines worked like magic." Elise moved her chair closer, giving Fil a big hug. "Thanks for looking after me, Fil. You’re really the best."
"Elise." Fil patted Elise’s back mildly, smiling. When Elise released her, Fil cleared her throat as she looked at her adorable smile. "Elise, I have to tell you something."
"What is it?" Elise blinked innocently. "Is it gossip?"
Fil shook her head. "About you and Marcus..." she trailed off as Elise’s cheek turned red.
"What is it about us?" Elise cocked her head to the side because Fil just stopped. "Did I do something embarrassing last night?"
"No, actually, you didn’t. It’s just that... do you like him that much?"
"Yes!" Elise didn’t even take a second to answer, grinning from ear to ear. "I was really scared yesterday, but since everything is going well, I feel like my life is perfect."
"Uh, the thing is..." Fil hesitated, holding Elise’s hands. She kept telling herself to say it, to tell Elise the truth. However, seeing this beautiful smile plastered on Elise, Fil didn’t have the heart to take it away.
"The thing is, what?" Elise blinked. "What are you trying to say, Fil?"
"Marcus is just playing you." Suddenly, Kenzo leaned against Fil’s cubicle and said what Fil couldn’t tell Elise.
The smile on Elise’s face instantly disappeared, frowning at Kenzo. "Kenzo, that’s not a nice joke."
Kenzo held his argument back, casting Fil a look. The latter carried mixed emotions as if she didn’t know if she would thank him or argue with him. But Kenzo wouldn’t just stand back. Elise was also his friend.
"I’m not joking and I’m saying this for you, Elise." Kenzo set his eyes on Elise, his expression solemn. "You don’t know Marcus. He’s not the type to —"
"Kenzo, I was scared to tell you about me and Marcus because you were friends. But this is a little out of line."
"Elise."
"If you don’t like him, that’s fine. I might not know Marcus, but what he has shown me so far is nothing but kindness." Elise huffed, displeased at Kenzo’s remarks. "I’m not asking you to accept him or be friends with him again, but don’t say things like that. I’ll be the judge of his character."
Kenzo sighed as he studied the look on Elise. The latter seemed she didn’t want to hear more, so he just raised his hands in surrender.
"Don’t tell me I told you so," he said as he backed away. "I’m just saying this out of concern."
With that being said, Kenzo walked back to his cubicle. He did what he could, and he tried. Elise, on the other hand, just stared at Kenzo’s figure with dismay.
"If he’s jealous that I have a love life, he didn’t have to say all that," Elise grumbled, facing Fil again. "This is so frustrating."
Fil pursed her lips into a thin line and held Elise’s hand. "Elise, I don’t want you to take this the wrong way. But I think he has a point. You should take things slow and get to know Marcus."
"Not you too, Fil."
"Just... listen to me, Elise." Fil squeezed her hand and sighed. "I’m not saying this because I don’t want you to have a relationship. You’re lovely. But Marcus... I know him. Kenzo is just telling you to be careful and I share his sentiments."
Elise frowned deeply before she slowly pulled her hand from Fil’s hand. "Thanks for your concern. I get it," was all she said before pushing her chair back to her spot.
Fil sighed helplessly, watching Elise try her best to work even before office hours. She called her again, but Elise just looked at her with a smile and said,
"I’m going back to work, Fil. I’ll send you the files I couldn’t yesterday."
Elise then went back to work, her mood not the same anymore. Fil wanted to apologize, but she didn’t want to ruin the opportunity Kenzo opened up for her. They already told Elise and warned her. Elise was old enough to reconsider their warning.
Even though Fil knew it was futile.
Fil had been in Elise’s shoes in the past, after all. People also kept warning her about Vincent back then, but what did she do? She feigned a deaf ear and blindfolded herself just to not see the gigantic red flags.
[By the time she asks for a divorce, she’ll hate you just as much as she hates me. I don’t care, but I’m sure you care.]
Fil stared at her monitor quietly, pursing her lips into a thin line. She wanted to wonder how could a person play with other people’s feelings like that. However, she couldn’t. After all, she knew very well why other people could play with people’s feelings because she had done it three months ago.
’This is my karma,’she thought. ’And I have to fix this.’
Fil cast Elise a sidelong glance. ’I’m sorry if this going to hurt you, Elise.’
