Chapter 198: Got too close
Fil should’ve known it was just a dream to think everything was going well. It was something she wanted to believe so she could feel better. Thinking that Marcus was being sincere to Elise would make her feel good, guilt-free.
At the back of her mind, she knew that wasn’t the case.
The man Elise was seeing was Marcus. Knowing him, he wouldn’t even waste an ounce of his energy on Elise, no matter how lovely she was just because he was Marcus. There was a reason he approached Elise and went out with her. Taking her out on the very day Fil returned to the office was too much of a coincidence.
Marcus knew Fil would return this day, and he made sure this would happen. He definitely expected Fil to treat her colleagues out to dinner. If this wasn’t manipulation, Fil didn’t know what to call it.
"I thought I would lose my mind."
Bitterness swirled in Fil’s eyes as she gazed at the bedroom where Elise was sleeping. She reached for the knob, closing the door while still in his embrace.
"You don’t like her?" was the first question that came out of her lips the second the door clicked.
"Not a chance," he whispered, moving his face to the side of her neck. "You still use the same perfume."
Fil felt a knot in her stomach as the hair on her nape raised. She tried to push him away, but he wouldn’t let go.
"Marcus," she called through her gritted teeth. "Let me go."
"I’m not letting you go." His tone was solemn as his hot breaths caressed her neck. "Never."
Fil clasped his side, closing her eyes as she took a deep breath. She promised Jackson what to do in this situation, and even if she didn’t want to do it at first, she might as well do it. But before she could kick him in the nuts, Marcus moved away his face from her neck.
He pulled his head back, staring at her up close. "You didn’t miss me?"
"Marcus, I just told you. I moved on." Using this opportunity, Fil placed her hand on his chest and created a distance between them. "And also, can’t you wait until we’re out of here? We’re in Elise’s place and —"
"So, what?"
"What?"
"This is her place, so? I shouldn’t tell you how much I missed you or hug you?" he cocked his head to her side. "Are you scared she’d wake up and see us?"
"Are you insane?" Fil gasped. "You’re going out with her and she... she likes you."
"But I want you."
Fil clasped his chest as she ground her teeth. "Break up with her, Marcus."
"Will you go out with me if I do?"
"No."
"Then I’ll keep seeing her," he replied nonchalantly. "I can’t hurt her now."
Fil couldn’t help but laugh, pushing his chest away. However, her action only made him tighten his hold on her.
"Let me go," she warned. "Let me go or..."
"Or what?" He arched a brow. "What will you do, Fil?"
"I’ll hurt you..." she hissed, eyes glinting. "... very bad."
Marcus chuckled, not taking her seriously. "You will?"
"Don’t test me."
"I’m not testing you. All I’m saying is if you’re asking me to break up with her, only for me to not get anything in return, what’s the point?" he tilted his head to the side. "Elise is cute. She’s a delight in the eye and I’m not lying when I say she’s also a good company. She makes me feel better about myself."
Marcus slowly removed his arm from her waist, tucking a portion of her hair behind her ear. "Though it’s not as fun when I’m with you, I like her enough to not go further than hold her hand."
Deep lines appeared between Fil’s brows, looking at him in disbelief.
"But if I wanted to, she would do anything for me," he continued quietly. "I can kiss her and claim her body. But I don’t want that."
His lips stretched until the corner of his eyes creased. "All I want is you. Can you stand the thought of me with another woman? I can’t, Fil." He leaned his face closer until his face was right beside her ear. "The mere thought of another man is kissing you, hugging you, and making love with you... makes me lose control."
This time, Fil used all her strength to push him away. At this point, his hold on her was already loose. As soon as there was enough space between them, Fil struck his face with her palm. His face was tossed to the side, but he only smirked as he touched the corner of his mouth.
"How dare you take Elise as a hostage?" her voice shook, eyes burning in anger. "What we had is a simple, fleeting affair. You know I only did it just to prove what you felt is out of pity."
"But you proved to me it’s not just pity." Marcus wiped the corner of his lips with his fingertip. "You made it very clear what I want is not just a simple fleeting affair."
"And that will never happen." She shook her head, taking a step back. "Break up with Elise or I will have to tell her about this. She might get hurt, but she’s not stupid, Marcus."
Fil scoffed. "I was hopeful you actually saw the good in her. What a disappointment." She glared at him, turning her back on him to leave. But just as she did, Marcus spoke.
"You don’t have to tell her we had a brief history," he said. "Once she wakes up in the morning, I’ll come clean. But I’ll also make sure she will hear that the past is in the past and the woman I want to spend the rest of my life with is her."
Fil’s heart thudded, looking back at him slowly. Marcus smirked in amusement, peeling his back from the wall, and marched toward her.
"Right," he said as he bent over to her a little, standing a step from her. "I planned to stay over and take care of her. And I also planned to propose. I would tell her everything I want to tell you just because she’s willing to listen, not you."
"You...!"
"You shouldn’t have gotten too close, Filomena." Marcus shook his head, his voice quiet. "But you did, and it’s your fault for touching a part of me you shouldn’t have. Take responsibility because I’m not letting you shred my heart just as much as you pleased. I’m not Vincent and I won’t chase after you. I’ll make you come to me and beg me on your knees."
