The Devil's Good Girl -
Chapter 197: Lose my mind
Chapter 197: Lose my mind
As agreed, Marcus stopped by the supermarket so Fil could buy ingredients to make hangover soup for Elise. She told him she could do it herself, but he insisted on helping her. After all, Elise was deep asleep in the car and it would be quick.
Fil didn’t want to look defensive and if he was serious with Elise, she didn’t want to have any awkwardness between them. Hence, she agreed. Their time in the supermarket was quick and Marcus simply showed little interest in everything she was buying, telling her so he knew what to buy once he needed to make it himself.
So far, Marcus kept a safe distance from her. And because of that, they were able to buy the ingredients as quickly as possible. Once they finished, they returned to the car and drove a few more minutes to Elise’s home.
Marcus carried Elise in his arms while Fil carried the ingredients. Once they got into Elise’s place, Marcus took her to the bedroom and Fil went straight to the kitchen. Fil had been in Elise’s place more than once before. Therefore, she was a little familiar with the place.
"I didn’t change her clothes," said Marcus as he walked into the kitchen, leaning his back against the kitchen counter. His hands rested on either side of him. "Though I wiped her face with a towel. She ended up throwing up."
Fil smiled at him while stirring the soup. "She shouldn’t have drank so much."
"I’m surprised you can hold your liquor well," he pointed out. "You used to be a lightweight."
"I’m still a lightweight. I just took little sips."
"You downed the entire glass."
"And that’s the best I could do. If I drank more than that, there would be two of us competing in the bathroom."
He let out a short laugh, but he didn’t say anything. He just watched her stand in front of the stove, placing the ingredients in the pot. Her hair was tied up in a bun with a short apron clinging around her neck. For a second, Marcus was in a trance.
"Did you move on?" he asked out of the blue, earning a look from her.
"Well, I feel much better now," she answered with an amicable smile before placing the lid on the pot. "So, I guess I did."
"Good."
Fil smacked her lips as she took off her apron. "I’ll help Elise change first. Watch the soup."
"Okay." Marcus nodded, watching her walk away. But before she could leave, he raised a question. "Do I have to stir it or should I just watch it?"
"Haha." Fil chuckled as she looked back at him. "Stir it every once in a while."
"Alright."
With that being said, Fil resumed her steps to Elise’s room. As soon as she stepped into the room, she caught a small bowl and a towel on the bedside table. Her eyes softened, knowing it was Marcus who did this for her.
’To be honest, Marcus can be a little... gentle,’ she thought, reminded of how Marcus treated her when they were still ’dating.’ ’I think if he’s serious about her, he would do well as lovers.’
Her hope for Marcus grew stronger as the man didn’t seem to be using Elise. If he was, he could’ve said so in the beginning. Or when Elise passed out. He could’ve also said it on their way here. But so far, Marcus behaved himself.
’If this continues, then I don’t have a problem,’she thought as she went through Elise’s closet, taking out a pair of comfortable pajamas. Taking care of Elise was the least Fil could do for her friend. So she carefully changed Elise’s clothes to make sure she would have a good night’s rest.
Once she finished, Fil sat on the edge of the bed, eyes on Elise. She smiled subtly, chuckling as the latter murmured in her sleep.
"Fil... I like... him..."
"I know," Fil whispered with a smile, stroking Elise’s hair gently. "I saw."
Fil idled for a while just to make sure everything was in place. They bought some medicines for Elise, and Marcus placed all of them on the bedside table. To make sure Elise knew that, Fil wrote a note and put it on the bedside table. When was sure Elise would notice it tomorrow, she walked out of the bedroom.
As soon as she stepped out, she flinched because Marcus was leaning against the wall beside the door. He had his arms folded underneath his chest, batting his eyes up at her.
"I put the soup in low heat. I searched on the internet since I didn’t know how long I should stir and watch it."
"Goodness." Fil placed her hand across her chest. "You almost gave me a heart attack."
Fil let out a shallow huff as she smiled.
"She’s fine," she intoned, assuming he was worried about her. "Don’t worry about her. She got medicines and the soup to make her feel better tomorrow."
"I see."
"I’ll check the soup so we can go home," she said, turning around to check the soup. But just as she did, a hand grabbed her wrist and spun her around. Marcus pulled her to him and before she knew it, his arms were already wrapped around her.
Fil froze as her eyes went wide while he rested his chin on her shoulder.
"When I said I missed you, this is what I meant, Fil," he whispered, locking his arms around her. "You had no idea how hard it is for me not to do this when you’re just within my reach."
"Marcus." Fil tried to push himself away, but he didn’t budge. She instinctively glanced at the door. It was still open and she could see Elise from where she was. "Marcus, what are you doing? Elise is —"
"You were right," he continued, ignoring her remarks. "What we had was wrong, and you were afraid that you were simply using me to move on. But now that you moved on and the three-month rule has passed, you have no reason to think you’re using me."
Fil’s breath hitched, flabbergasted at how her own words backfired on her. Marcus tightened his embrace around her, burying his face in her shoulder.
"God... I missed you," he muttered, clasping her back tightly. "I thought I would lose my mind."
Fil balled her hands into a tight fist, intuitively shifting her eyes to where Elise was. ’I’m sorry, Elise,’ she whispered in her heart. ’I’m sorry for dragging you into this.’
