Chapter 153: It’s fun to play with fire until you get burned.
No one throws a party like the Hale Family. It was what they were most known for, aside from their steadily growing company. Fil heard about it most of the time, but only today she understood why.
Starting from the prestigious venue befitting the reputation of the chairman, elegant and tasteful decorations, floral arrangements, table settings, and subtle lighting created a luxurious atmosphere. A gourmet menu featuring fine cuisine and an exquisite wide selection of wine was also available; all with consideration of dietary restrictions and the guests’ preferences.
As for entertainment, a live classical performance of a world-renowned orchestra professionally played for everyone. All guests also followed a strict dress code, making the entire event even more sophisticated.
"This year’s party is significantly better than last year!"
"I heard it was Chief Director Hale who arranged this year’s party."
"Ohh. This is his first year of preparing, but I’m impressed."
"His mother had been preparing all their parties. Of course, he would learn from her."
"If only Madam Hale would give me some advice."
Voices from women from different groups echoed in Fil’s direction. Many of the ladies were impressed at the fact it was Vincent, who was behind this magical place. Fil couldn’t blame them, though.
They were right.
This party was more than spectacular. The fact that it was Vincent’s first time made it even more impressive. However, Fil didn’t come here just to marvel at the place or admire the unworthy.
Looking around the venue, Fil searched for the table and group she was supposed to be with. Someone was supposed to escort her from the entrance, but she came early just to see the situation. After all, Fil needed time for herself after spending her morning with Marianne.
"Are you lost, baby girl?"
Fil jolted when a hot breath caressed the shell of her ear. Looking back as she jumped away, she gazed at the person cautiously. Deep lines appeared between her brows as soon as she recognized the man. With that sleek hair that was gelled back, a tuxedo with a few buttons open that displayed his thin gold chain necklace, and the overall semi-formal look made him stand out among the men.
"Michael?"
"Haha." Michael chuckled, straightening his back. "I thought you were looking for a familiar face and pretend you have a social life. Did I get it wrong?"
Fil crossed her arms under her chest, looking at the man from up and down. "No, you were right."
"So that makes the two of us?" he wiggled his brows. "Please save me from this situation. You might not know this, but I am actually socially awkward."
"Hi, Michael."
Suddenly, a woman passing by greeted Michael. The latter maintained a smile and winked at the lady before facing Fil again.
"I don’t know her name," he explained, smiling. "Though I know she had a sexy big mole on the lower side of her breast."
’Of all the people who will approach me, this guy happened to be the first.’ A deep exhale slipped past Fil’s nostrils, making him raise a brow. "I’m sorry, Michael. I just remembered I used the wrong entrance."
"You’re leaving me alone?"
"You’re not alone." She smiled as she turned around. "I’m sure many people will keep you company."
Michael smacked his lips and watched her walk away. He hummed for a moment before jogging to catch up to her. As soon as he was walking beside her, Fil rolled her eyes and sighed heavily.
"I’ll walk with you, since who knows? Someone might abduct you and keep you all for himself?" he casually joked. "Or stab you on the way?"
"We’re at a party, Michael. Not in a narrow alley."
"Then abduction it is."
Fil shook her head, meekly excusing herself to other guests who were on the way. Michael, on the other hand, observed her from the corner of his eyes.
"Say, Fil. You’re single now, are you?" he asked, but she ignored him. "Do you want to hang out later?"
Fil hoped her silence was enough to give him the answer.
"It’ll be fun," he suggested. "Many of the youngsters in here will attend to loosen up. This party is too boring and formal, but then again, it’s the chairman’s party! You got to respect the man."
"Michael." Fil stopped as they reached the other entrance and exit of the venue. She faced him squarely, sporting a forced smile.
"I’m not coming," she clarified because it seemed her silence wasn’t clear enough. "I’m here because the chairman asked me to come. But if he didn’t, I wouldn’t be here. Let alone, come to another party after this one. I don’t have much energy. So, as much as I appreciate the invitation, I can’t go."
Her forced smile stretched, and she sarcastically added, "Thanks for walking me here. I feel safe that I reached here safe and sound."
With that being said, Fil turned her back on him. If she remembered it correctly, the chairman’s distinguished guests were accommodated in another hall. This was, of course, to chat and socialize in a much more private setting before they would join the main hall.
But just as Fil took a few steps away from Michael, she stopped.
"All I’m saying is, you should stop while it’s early," said Michael, smiling. "Ever heard of that guy who flew too close to the sun? And the moth to a flame? It’s fun to play with fire until you get burned, Filomena."
Fil slowly looked back at him, brows furrowed. Michael just maintained a knowing smile, making her wonder what he knew. Did he know she was playing Marcus and Vincent? Or that she was sleeping with another man? By the tone of his voice, he knew something he shouldn’t.
"Haha. Look at you." Michael laughed. "I was just guessing, but it seemed I almost touched something you don’t want anyone to touch."
He turned around and waved dismissively. "Anyway, see you around. If you need a friend, I’m only one call away."
Fil pressed her lips into a thin line, eyes fixed on his back. Before she could wonder or panic, a butler approached her from the side.
"Miss Lovin?" called the butler, smiling when he earned her attention. "We had been looking for you and the chairman had been waiting. This way, please."
"Yes." Fil forced a smile, following the butler. But as she did so, she couldn’t help but look back at Michael before he disappeared from the crowd.
’What did he know?’she wondered, her expression looked solemn. ’I didn’t pay much attention to him since I know he’ll eventually self-destruct.’
But now...
Fil balled her hands tightly, eyes glinting. ’I have to do something about him.’
