Chapter 154: Women empowerment
Chapter 154: Women empowerment
When the butler escorted Fil to the private hall, the chairman happily welcomed her with both his hands. He heartily introduced her to his close associates, bragging about her work and current project. And since the chairman was obviously fond of her, the guests in the room welcomed her just because.
The room was full of men with only Fil and an old madam with them. However, unlike her, who had to smile and speak kind, generous pleasantries, the old madam watched everything on the sidelines. She didn’t seem an outcast, but she didn’t actively participate in all the conversations.
"For a young lady to lead a big project such as the Solana Project, no wonder the chairman is so proud of her," one of the men in the room mused. "My daughter is also around the same age, but all that young lady wants is to spend money."
"Haha! You cannot have it all," said another man teasingly. "You already have a brilliant son, after all. How was his venture on the international market?"
"It was doing much better than we expected. Our sales and demands skyrocketed for the past months..."
"Speaking of market, I heard the CC Company was trying to enter the Arkwright’s monopoly in..."
The conversation within the group quickly changes every minute. One second, they were talking about Fil and her achievements, and then the success of their children and the bad sheep of their family. They had then quickly moved on to business talks. It sounded so natural, and surprisingly, it wasn’t confusing at all.
It only showed how quickly everyone adapts to certain topics and has an opinion about them. No wonder these men reached their level of success in business. They could maintain their composure even if the topic that would come up wasn’t necessarily something they were comfortable talking about.
"I also heard the young Director Hale is getting engaged." Suddenly, another man spoke and brought them all back to a more personal topic. "Chairman, is she the one that will marry your family?"
Felix Hale chuckled. "How I wished, but my grandson has to get her the moon first to call himself worthy."
The men burst out in laughter, nodding in agreement.
"Young women in this generation were surely hard to please," another one commented playfully. "All these women’s empowerment are making women less and less feminine. Back in the day, women had nothing to worry about aside from tending to their husbands and home."
"Tell me about it. My daughter just told me a few months back that she doesn’t want to marry. She’s giving me a headache."
"Haha. I thought I’m the only one having headaches with my daughters —"
"What a pathetic bunch." Suddenly, the old madam in the group joined in the conversation. Her seductive and slow voice immediately put a stop to the conversation. "Back in the day, women had nothing to worry about since men like you only gave women one career, being a man’s personal servant and whore."
"Madam Sinclair, I see we finally got your attention?" another old fellow mused. "Though I disagree with you. A man’s role is to provide for the family and their needs. If both men and women worked, who would take care of the children?"
"Are you saying if, for instance, Miss Lovin here gets married, she has to give up the career she built up just to become a maid?" Madam Sinclair inquired. "That would be a waste of another brilliant mind just because she was born with a different genitalia."
"You are missing the point here, Madam Sinclair." Another man argued. "If a woman could live a carefree life, it is only natural to —"
"So, you’re saying that your daughter, who became the dean of medicine not long ago, is stupid?" Madam Sinclair smirked. "I wonder what she would feel if she heard that her father thinks less of her now that she’s a woman with a career."
"A housewife is a career."
"An undervalued career, yes." Madam Sinclair chuckled. "Back in the day, women relied on men because men like you thought they could decide and think for them. Though I agree that women’s empowerment is overrated, it’s still about a person’s freedom to choose even after marriage."
The banter between Madam Sinclair and the men in the room continued. Despite being the lone woman in the conversation, Madam Sinclair easily shut them all down one by one. It didn’t sound like they were getting personal to the point they would fight, though.
"Haha." The chairman chuckled quietly, casting Fil a look. "That’s Madam Sinclair, a woman who always has the last thing to say."
Fil smiled back at the chairman as she wanted to step away from this conversation. Secretly, though, she was rooting for Madam Sinclair.
"She’s also a trusted friend of mine," the chairman added, nodding at Fil reassuringly. "She’s an amazing person."
"That seems to be true."
Both Fil and the chairman smiled before they continued listening to the banter before them. Madam Sinclair seemed to be having fun pressing the men’s buttons, until one after another, they were giving up. But before she could wipe out all of them, a butler approached the chairman.
"Alright!" the chairman clapped. "It’s time for us to join the party. I believe we’ve already exchanged pleasantries and created a mood."
"A not-so-good mood at that," someone commented in a joking tone.
"You shouldn’t have provoked Madam Sinclair, then," another one joked. "With my ongoing divorce and lawsuit, your humiliation somehow made me feel better. This night will be fun."
As if nothing happened, everyone went back to their usual calm and playful selves. It was a whole new perspective for Fil, thinking they would be more uptight considering their contribution to society.
"I hope I amused you enough, chairman." Ignoring the comments while preparing to join the main hall, Madam Sinclair approached the chairman. She glanced at Fil and smiled subtly.
"Oh, I am amused," the chairman laughed, letting Madam Sinclair assist him while Fil walked to his other side. "Though I think you scared my little Filomena a bit."
Madam Sinclair chuckled, shifting her eyes back to Fil. "Or just earned her admiration. Either way, I’m glad to finally meet you, Miss Lovin. The chairman always talks about you."
"I’m also honored to meet you, Madam Sinclair," Fil smiled, assuming the madam said were just nothing.
With that being said, the chairman and his valued guests made their way to the main hall to continue the fun. Little did they know, fun wasn’t the only one that awaited them that night. At least, for Fil, she didn’t think this night would turn out differently and deadly than she expected.
