Chapter 149: My hate and My love
Chapter 149: My hate and My love
[I don’t like giving second chances, but you... I gave you countless chances even when you didn’t deserve it. Why? Because I loved you. But now, I don’t think I still do.]
[There’s nothing to fix anymore, Vin. I’m done. ]
[Stop coming here because if you don’t, I’ll move out.]
Fil’s voice replayed in Vincent’s mind like a broken record. He chugged down a can of beer while driving, stepping on the pedal as hard as he could. Honks rang on the highway at how recklessly he was in the car, earning countless curses from other drivers. But he didn’t care.
Vincent squeezed the empty can of beer in his hand, tossing it into the front passenger seat. He then picked up another can of beer, opening it with only one hand, and chugging half of it in one go.
"Filomena..." he breathed out, wiping the corner of his mouth with the back of his hand. "You can’t just throw me away like this."
Vincent punched the honk, making the car ahead of him move out of his way. Perhaps, if he truly got into an accident, she would change her mind. She rushed to him when she heard he got into an accident, but then she looked a little less worried when she saw he was fine.
But what if he wasn’t fine?
She wouldn’t have the heart to leave an injured man, right?
Vincent stepped on the pedal even harder, driving past some cars like a bolt of lightning. At this speed, if he crashed, it would kill him. But he didn’t care. Because if he didn’t die, it would be a small price compared to the benefits he would get. There was no way Fil would have the courage to leave him then. Not now, not in the future.
"Haha." An evil laugh escaped him, running his tongue across his inner cheek. "Haha. Hah."
Vincent snapped his eyes at the rearview mirror when he saw red and blue light following him. He hissed, ignoring the siren behind. Instead, he kept his eyes ahead and continued with his speed.

Snuggling up on the couch, Marianne laughed at the stand-up comedy clip she was watching. She immersed herself in the skit while enjoying a bowl of popcorn. Suddenly, in the middle of watching, her phone rang. Putting aside the bowl, she sprawled her hand on the coffee table.
"Vincent?" she narrowed her eyes as soon as she saw Vincent’s number on it. "Didn’t he say he won’t see me for a while?"
Marianne thought about it and then shrugged, answering the call without a second hesitation. Before she could even say anything, the unfamiliar voice on the other end of the line spoke. The lines between her brows resurfaced, listening to what the other person was saying.
"Sure," she said after just a minute. "I’ll be there."

Marianne sat in the driver’s seat quietly, glancing to the front passenger seat when she caught a figure approaching. In no time, Vincent hitched in and tossed his blazer suit on the backseat.
"Seriously?" she scoffed, looking at the hot mess in the front passenger seat. "Vincent, tomorrow is your grandfather’s birthday party. How can you drive drunk and end up in jail?"
Vincent leaned back, reclining the chair with his eyes closed. "Just drive."
"Vincent, you almost got yourself killed if the police didn’t stop you."
"Marianne, not now." He peeked in his one eye, shaking his head mildly. "There’s a reason I called you instead of Marcus for help. Because I know you’d try to understand like you always do instead of nagging me."
He closed his eyes once more, massaging the space above his brows. "Just take me to the hotel."
Marianne opened and closed her mouth, but then stopped herself from saying anything. She huffed in frustration before driving him to the hotel where the party would be held.
Silence filled the car for the next fifteen minutes. But when Marianne couldn’t take it anymore, she broke the silence.
"It was Fil, wasn’t it?" she asked, but her tone sounded more like she already guessed. "What happened again this time?"
Vincent slowly opened his eyes, looking at the side of the road. "She broke up with me."
"You’ve already broken up."
"This time, for good."
Marianne furrowed her brows, casting him a quick look. She only looked at him briefly, but she caught the bitter look in the corner of his eyes.
"I already knew she was serious when she broke up with me the first time," he continued quietly and helplessly. "She’s Fil. She’s not the type to say mean things just because she’s angry. But tonight... she threw away the years we’re together. Just like that. She wouldn’t even want to see me anymore because if I do, she’s willing to move to another place."
Vincent let out a bitter laugh. "She hates me now."
Marianne bit her inner bottom lip and sighed. She drove slowly, letting him have his moment.
"Vincent, you do understand that I’m the last person you should be telling this, right?" she remarked after a prolonged silence. "You know my feelings for you and I cannot sympathize."
Vincent cocked his head to her and blinked wearily. "Heh. Right? But then again, I feel better that I’m not the only one suffering." He shrugged as he peeled his eyes away from her. "Probably why I called you too instead of someone else."
"You can’t feel sorry for me because you think if Fil and I broke up, you can replace her," he continued quietly but honestly. "And I can’t also feel sorry for you, even though I know that no matter what you do, you can never replace her."
"Hah." Marianne scoffed. "Not long ago, you told me I was special."
"Because you are." He looked back at her, staring at her side profile. "You are special to me, Marianne. But I don’t love you, nor do I want to marry you."
"Why?"
"Because you’re not Filomena Lovin."
Marianne gripped the steering wheel tighter as her jaw clenched. She swallowed the tension in her throat, taking a deep breath.
"What does Fil have that I don’t?" she asked under her breath. "Just what is it in her that you wouldn’t let go?"
Vincent pursed his lips and hummed. Setting his eyes on the window beside him, a bitter smile turned up on his face.
"She has one thing that you don’t, Anne," he said. "My hate."
He paused as his bitter smile stretched. "And I can’t let her go because I also love her just as much."
