The Devil's Good Girl -
Chapter 148: That’s easy
Chapter 148: That’s easy
Meanwhile...
Marcus swirled a whiskey in his hand, sitting on the couch quietly, deep in thought. Fil didn’t react much to his confession, which he expected. After all, she just got out of a long relationship, and having to face many emotions was probably overwhelming.
"Vincent," he whispered, shifting his eyes to the open small box containing the cufflink in front of him. "I can’t let him have her back."
A glint flickered across his eyes, thinking of the ploy Vincent tried to pull off the last time. Although Marcus was proud that Fil saw through it and called it out, it was still not enough. Marcus knew his friend and what he was capable of.
Vincent could be dumb, but was also scheming.
Marcus chugged down the whiskey in one go, hissing as he placed the glass on the low table. He then picked up one of the cufflinks in the box before he leaned back against the couch. He stared at it, deep in thought.
’I need time to make sure no matter what he would do, she won’t feel sorry for him anymore,’he told himself, eyes gleaming in contempt. ’Which route should I go? Should I make her accept him again temporarily and buy myself some time?’
There were quite a few ways Marcus had already come up with to get rid of Vincent in Fil’s life. After all, ever since that time Fil rushed to the hospital because Vincent was ’hurt,’ it never left his mind. However, he was aware those ways weren’t so effective. Hence, he needed more time.
"Marianne," he murmured, analyzing Marianne and Vincent’s relationship. If his observation and theory were correct, then that woman could be a good ally for now — not in the long run, though. If Marianne was obsessed with Fil, then having her around was akin to carrying a ticking time bomb.
She was already destroying Vincent and Fil’s relationship, and she would surely do the same to Fil’s next relationship. She didn’t need to sleep with all of Fil’s lovers to destroy her relationship, after all.
"Filomena Lovin," he muttered with a weak laugh, staring at the cufflink in between his fingers. "How I wish you had an idea of what I’m willing to go through just to make you mine."
Because, unlike Fil, who had only seen them and their circle of friends on the surface, Marcus was deeply aware of what everyone was capable of. He wouldn’t be friends with them if Marcus simply thought they were fun to be with. They weren’t fun, but they were definitely interesting individuals.
It was probably the reason Fil never fit in, no matter how she tried.
As Marcus stared at the cufflink, he heard his phone ring. He raised his brows and indifferently glanced at it. A smile turned up on his face when he read the name on the screen, reaching out to pick up the call.
"I thought you would not call tonight so you can have a beauty sleep?" he humored as soon as the line connected. "Can’t sleep?"
Fil didn’t answer immediately, warranting a raised brow from him.
"Is there something wrong?" he asked, this time worried. "Anything happened?"
"I ended it with him," Fil confessed after several seconds. "I ended everything with Vincent. This time, for good. No more chances."
Marcus cocked his head back and ran his tongue across his inner cheek. Now, the option of buying himself some time was out of the options.
"I thought about what you said earlier and, to be honest, I don’t think I can take responsibility for anything for now," she continued under her breath. "I will still think and hope that you’d end up not liking me, Marcus."
"Are you also going to say you can’t go out with me anymore?"
"No," she whispered. "It was the opposite. I want to see the end of it."
A moment of silence reigned in the line as neither of them spoke after her. Marcus slowly leaned forward, resting his arm on his leg.
"You’re suggesting...?" he trailed off, scratching his temple with his index. "We announce it to our friends?"
"Vincent won’t give up so easily. Even though I made sure he knew that I was serious, he’d still do things to make me come back," Fil explained quietly. "Until then, I’m asking you to be patient. I’ll deal with him until he accepts I’m never going back to him, whatever he does. Moreover, if he finds out we’re seeing each other, I don’t know what he’ll do to you."
"He’s not going to do anything to me, but sure, whatever you like," he reassured, smiling. "I’m just glad we’re now on the same page."
Fil didn’t speak immediately, but when she did, she whispered, "Marcus, you better be serious about this because if you don’t, then don’t make me like you. I won’t be able to take it if you hurt me."
"Not a chance. My goal is to get your ’I do,’ without a problem," he quipped. "I’ll see you tomorrow?"
"Mhm. Vincent’s grandpa prepared a hotel room for me. I will be there early."
"Alright."
"Goodnight, Marcus."
"Goodnight, Fil."
When the line disconnected, Marcus gazed at his phone with a smile. He then poured himself another glass, leaning back leisurely.
"I guess I don’t need to do anything for now," he told himself before he laughed in satisfaction. "That’s easy."
******
"Goodnight, Fil."
Fil slowly put down her phone while sitting on the couch in her living area. She raised her foot and rested it over the other. A layer of frost covered her face as the corner of her lips curled up into a smirk.
"Vincent should thank me for buying himself some time," she whispered, knowing Marcus was the type to seize any opportunity. He was also careful and calculating from what she observed. She figured the man was probably concocting evil plans that could affect her plans. Hence, she had to lower his guard.
"I don’t need to do anything for now," she told herself, lifting the wine to her lips. "That’s easy."
