The Devil's Good Girl
Chapter 150: Last

Chapter 150: Last

The birthday of Felix Hale, the chairman of Hale Construction, was always one of the most important occasions for the family. Every year, the Hale Family would host a grand party that was grander than the last. And this year, they went all out.

As usual, those distinguished guests were given accommodations for less hassle attendance. Some of the guests already arrived at the hotel a day before the event. Fil, on the other hand, simply chose to come early in the morning instead of spending the night.

Standing in the middle of the suite, Fil was in awe.

"Wow." She looked around. "Even though I was a part of designing the hotel, it’s my first time staying over."

A satisfied grin turned up on her face before jumping on the bed. Her body bounced slightly, laying flat on her back, eyes on the ceiling.

"This is nice," she said, spreading her arms and feet. "I should tell Jack we need to buy a new bed."

Fil closed her eyes and took a deep breath. But then her phone rang, forcing her to open her eyes. Raising her brows, she peeked at her bag over her luggage. She frowned, a little lazy to get up and get her phone. However, she promised Jackson last night and even this morning to call him once she arrived. With that thought in mind, Fil lazily got up from the bed to get her bag.

"I’ve arrived just now," she said as soon as she answered the call while dragging herself back to the bed. "And my room is super nice."

Jackson chuckled. "It must be. I can hear the amusement in your tone," he said, putting down the mug of coffee on the table. "You’re coming home tonight?"

"I told you. I’m sleeping here." Fil bounced on the bed, looking down at it and then giggling. "Jack, we need to buy a new bed. The bed in my suite makes me bounce at every movement."

"Hmm. Sure. It’ll be easier for us too."

Fil furrowed her brows, shifting her attention back to him. "Easier for us for what?"

"You really want me to say it aloud?"

She was about to answer, but realized what he meant by that. Her face instantly turned red while Jackson laughed.

"Jack, is that all you think about?" she gasped in disbelief. "Goodness."

"Don’t blame me. You left after teasing me."

Fil shook her head, guilty as charged. "Are you still home?"

"Mhm." He hummed. "Enjoying a mug of coffee in the dining while telling myself I should’ve got up early while you were here. We could’ve done more things together."

"I’m not dead." She deadpanned. "We can still do things once I get home."

He shrugged. "By the way, I sent something in your way."

"Huh?"

"Tell the chairman happy birthday for me." His tone changed even more playfully. "As a distinguished guest, your gift is supposed to be special. People might not say it, but a new face always has to prove why they deserve a seat at their table. The chairman’s affection as a reason wouldn’t be enough."

Fil pressed her lips. "You think so?"

"I don’t think so, sweetheart. I know." He chuckled. "Anyway, good luck today. May the odds be with you."

"Wait. You’re hanging up?"

"Yes?"

"Why?"

"Because I also have something to do today."

"But you said you have no other plans."

"I did until your brother sent me a message. He’s coming to the city, and I planned to accompany him."

"Eli?" Fil furrowed her brows. "Why is he in the city? Did he need anything?"

"Oh, it’s nothing to worry about. It’s just school stuff." He shrugged. "Also, I told him during our trip that I’d help him."

Fil pursed her lips and smiled subtly. "Thanks, Jack. I should be there to help him."

"Come home today." Jackson smiled. "If you really want to be the supportive sister. For now, be the neglectful one and continue playing your wicked game."

"You don’t have to say it like that."

Fil and Jack talked for a little while until he told her he had to shower. Hence, she had to end the call reluctantly.

"I’m really grateful to him," she murmured, smiling. "Letting him into my life is probably the best decision I made after a long time."

Fil tossed her phone and collapsed on her back. The party would start in the evening. Hence, she had a full day for herself. Closing her eyes, Fil moaned as she lazily rolled on her side. Jackson came home late last night, and she waited for him. Which was why she felt a little tired and needed more sleep.

"An entire day," she hummed. "Better sleep it off."

As soon as those words rolled out of her tongue, Fil heard a knock on the door. She huffed in irritation, snapping her eyes open.

"Or not," she pushed herself up. "I wonder who came in here first."

Marcus? Or Vincent? Or the chairman’s secretary?

There were only three people that came to her mind who could knock on her door this early. Although she leaned more on the guess, it was Vincent. After last night, she was certain he would still try to exhaust every resource to get her back.

But when Fil opened the door, the person she least expected was standing outside.

"Marianne?" she blurted out, furrowing her brows. "What are you doing here?"

Marianne smiled sweetly. "Is that what you’re going to ask your best friend when she comes to visit you?"

"Uhh..."

"I heard you were coming," said Marianne with a smile. "Fine. That’s a lie. I saw you in the lobby while I was in the breakfast buffet. So I came here after eating. Just so you know, I’ve been here since last night. The chairman’s birthday is a great excuse for a short vacation."

"I see." Fil slowly smiled as she was able to gather her thoughts. She pushed the door wide open, stepping aside. "I guess inviting you in is the natural course of action?"

"Haha. Of course, it is," Marianne humored before stepping inside. Fil, on the other hand, stayed in the same spot and followed her with her gaze.

Marianne halted after a few steps, looking back at her, and then smiled. "Don’t tell me you’re leaving now?"

"I’m not avoiding you," Fil quipped, closing the door behind her. ’I wonder why she’s here. Did she hear that I broke up with him for good? Well, I won’t find out what she’s planning if I don’t indulge with her.’
