Chapter 147: The final blow to break him

Fil rested her arms against the railing whilst holding a glass of wine. Aside from the parking space down below, there wasn’t anything to see from the balcony of her room. But the cool night breeze and a glass of wine were often a good combination to unwind. After all, Fil had to think.

[So yes, I like you. How much? That, I don’t know. That’s why I’m dating you with the thought of marrying. Because if I consider that, then asking for your hand answers the question of how much.]

After hearing those words, Fil was genuinely rendered speechless. Not because she wasn’t expecting them, but because of how they were delivered. She didn’t expect how such words could carry such weight.

A glint flickered across her sharp eyes, remembering the look on Marcus’ face.

"He’s falling faster than I expected," she whispered, gazing down the balcony. "He’ll crash."

She pressed her lips into a thin line, wondering why she couldn’t feel the slightest remorse for Marcus’ impending doom. At this point, she expected herself to wane. But alas, she wasn’t. If anything, Marcus’s feelings were fueling her to keep the momentum.

She would hurt him.

And yet, she couldn’t feel sorry about it, nor did she feel any excitement about it. If anything, all she felt was it was the right thing to do.

"The right thing to do, huh?" came out another whisper, sighing. "He’s gonna kill me once I crush his heart."

Marcus was probably Fil was the most surprised about. Despite knowing the man for years, she felt like she didn’t know him that much. After all, in Vincent’s circle, Vincent often shone the brightest. But now, it seemed like she was just biased back then.

Vincent wasn’t the brightest. She just hadn’t seen them eye to eye, and dating Marcus proved that.

"I’ve been missing something," she whispered, arching a brow as her gaze fell on the parking space. "I had to look at it differently."

Fil pressed her lips into a thin line, squinting her eyes as she gazed at the person coming out of the sedan. She took a deep breath, not surprised that Vincent was in her place again. Good thing Jackson was out of town and would come home late.

Fil pushed herself away and turned around, marching toward the small round table on the balcony. Putting her glass of wine down, she picked up her phone and rang Vincent. As it rang, she walked back to the railing.

Vincent stopped in the middle of the parking space, took his phone out, and answered immediately.

"Fil," he called with urgency. "You called? I’m —"

"Look up." Her tone was cold and flat, watching Vincent look up at her unit. Despite their distance, she could see the surprise on his face clearly. "You don’t have to come up here. I’m not opening the door for you."

"Fil."

"Say everything you want to say now," she continued in the same tone. "It’s not like it’s going to change anything. I’m tired, so make it quick."

Vincent frowned and huffed faintly, walking in the same spot to face the balcony. He kept his eyes upward, holding the phone in his ears tightly.

"Fil," he breathed out. "I’m sorry."

Fil didn’t answer, but she kept her eyes on him.

"It’s stupid that I thought you’d forgive me faster if I got hurt. The accident was real, and I almost got seriously hurt if not for the employee who noticed it earlier," he explained, throwing his hand to the side. "I didn’t want to lie to you."

"But you did," she returned almost immediately. "You didn’t want to lie, but you still did."

"I’m desperate." The corner of his eyes turned red as a layer of tears coated them. "I’m scared. I don’t want to lose you, Fil. I made a mistake and I know I screwed up. But I can do better. Please don’t do this to me."

Fil didn’t react, but she kept her attention on him.

"Are you really going to be like this?" he asked helplessly. "Just what do you want me to do, hm? I can go down on my knees and beg for your forgiveness."

"I gave you the chance, Vince." Her voice lowered as she briefly clenched her teeth. "And you blew it up."

Vincent clasped his hair in distress, running out of options and ideas on how to make her soften up. He should’ve known how tough it was to break her once she had decided.

Decided...

Vincent looked up again. This time, his expression was inexplicable. "Did you... have you already decided, Fil? Did you really decide to... leave me? And forget everything? All we had during our decade of togetherness and another decade of friendship? Have you truly decided to forget them all?"

A long silence reigned in the line right after his line of questions. Both of them stared at each other, carrying completely different expressions. Vincent seemed to be on the verge of breaking down, while Fil maintained a stoic front.

’Marcus is spot on,’ she thought, recalling some of the things Marcus spewed earlier. ’After certain things happen, you just don’t feel the same way about people. No matter who they are.’

For instance, she didn’t feel sorry for Vincent anymore. If this was before, she would break. But now, she couldn’t feel anything about him anymore. She just felt like he was truly pathetic and it was mindboggling that she didn’t notice earlier.

"Vincent," she called after a prolonged silence. "I don’t like giving second chances, but you... I gave you countless chances even when you didn’t deserve it. Why? Because I loved you. But now, I don’t think I still do."

"Fil." Vincent took a step forward. "Please, no. Don’t, please. I told you. I’d be better. I punished Valerie for what she did to you and my mom, she will be nicer to you! Grandpa also likes you. Let’s fix this."

Fil shook her head. "There’s nothing to fix anymore, Vin. I’m done. Go home and rest. Your family has a big day tomorrow. And please, stop coming here because if you don’t, I’ll move out."

With that being said, Fil ended the call and pushed herself away from the balcony. She picked up the wineglass and went in, not interested in his reaction. She had seen enough and was satisfied with it.

Meanwhile, Vincent’s heart sank, staring at the balcony blankly. He dropped his hand to his side as a tear rolled down his cheek. This time, he knew from the bottom of his heart, it was over. She was done, and there was nothing that could change her mind.

"No," he whispered. "You can’t leave me just like that."
