The Devil's Good Girl -
Chapter 144: Meeting you halfway
Chapter 144: Meeting you halfway
"Mom! You promised!"
"Gosh! What am I going to do then!?"
"You said you’re going to take care of that woman!? And you told me I can use your card for now, but it’s not working! Mom!"
Fil and Marcus held each other’s gaze. Although they figured Valerie was just in the regular store area, they couldn’t help but listen. At this point, everyone could only listen to her throw a huge fit.
"Mom!" Valerie called once more. "Why are you doing this to me? You told me you believed me! I didn’t hit her, alright? I’m being punished unjustly. Moreover, why are you doing this to me? Why lie to me? You gave me the card, but now, they said it’s frozen. Do you know how humiliating it is?"
"Throwing a huge fit publicly is much more humiliating than having a frozen account," Fil murmured, rolling her eyes as she leaned against the settee. "I guess we’re not going anywhere until she’s here."
"More time for me." Marcus smiled as he leaned back. "Don’t glare at me. I didn’t call her to be here."
"Gosh." Fil shook her head, snapping her eyes up when the female employee approached them.
"Miss Fil," called the employee, and for some reason, Valerie stopped talking.
Fil’s breath hitched while Marcus observed her from the corner of his eyes. The employee furrowed her brows at the horrified reaction Fil had just by calling her name.
"Keep it down," Marcus whispered, offering his hand to get Fil’s purchase. "And also, contain the child outside. It brings down the store’s glamour."
"Of course. I’m sorry for the interruption. We’ll escort her out." The female attendant smiled after giving them their item. "Would you like some champagne?"
"Sure."
With that being said, the attendant left them alone and didn’t ask if they were going to leave. Meanwhile, Marcus glanced at the small paper bag and then cast Fil a look.
"You look... terrified," he pointed out, stretching his arm over the backrest of the settee. "Scared she’d get in here and see the two of us?"
Fil frowned deeply as she faced him. "That girl harassed me not long ago. And yes, I’m a little nervous that she might barge in here and see the two of us."
"You’re single, I am single." He shrugged. "What’s there to be afraid of?"
"Stop teasing me. You know why I’m scared." Fil rolled her eyes in irritation, folding her arms underneath her chest. "It’s not funny."
Marcus chuckled, lowering his hand to poke her shoulder blade. "My bad. Please don’t be mad."
"Weren’t you nervous?" she returned with a huff, facing him once again. "Or at least a little worried."
"Nope."
"Why?"
"I don’t know?" he shrugged. "I find it exciting."
Fil squinted her eyes, adjusting her position until she was facing him squarely. "Is this what it is all about for you? You find this setup... exciting?"
"A little."
"Gosh."
"But then again, if she finds out, we won’t have to hide about us."
"There’s no us, yet. What happened to the ’trial’ part?" she wondered in disbelief. "Weren’t we keeping this a secret so we can reduce the damages if it turns out it’s a false alarm?"
"We did. A week ago." He nodded, raising his brows momentarily. "Quite a long time for things to develop."
Fil blinked continuously, making him chuckle at her cuteness. "We didn’t talk for an entire week and we only went on a date twice. Technically, just once. The first one isn’t actually a date."
"True. Just one date, and then a lot of thinking." He smiled innocently, amused at the instant reaction that appeared on her face. "The last time I told you that for me, I’m dating you to marry. Sadly, we couldn’t talk about it because something happened."
"Ugh, goodness. Don’t remind me," Fil grumbled, displaying that whatever happened the last time didn’t end on a good note. "I don’t want to think about it."
"Before we talk about someone we shouldn’t, I’ll tell you one thing," he remarked. "I meant it when I said I took a huge risk when I asked you out. And spending some time with you proves you’re different."
Deep lines appeared on her forehead. "How am I different? As far as I know, I’m also human."
"Haha. That’s also a question I have for myself," he returned playfully. "The only clue I have is that aside from not leaving my mind, you make me feel things."
"Huh?"
He smiled until the corner of his eyes slightly squinted. "You also make me want to compromise and meet you halfway." His tone lowered as his eyes slowly fell on her plump lips. "For instance, holding myself back from kissing you just because I know you’d end up slapping me and pushing me out of your life permanently."
"I don’t want that even though I feel like it’s the perfect time to be making out right now," he added under his breath, meeting her eyes once more. His lips curled up charmingly as his eyes twinkled, chuckling as her cheeks slowly turned pinkish. "Now I sort of admire Vincent’s self-control. This is hard."
"Goodness. Why are you so honest?" Fil looked away while touching her cheek with the back of her hand. "Is making things awkward between us a habit you’re trying to pick up? It’s a bad habit — I’m telling you. I think my heart fluttered just now. Do you think we’re in a romance drama?"
Marcus chuckled as she continued to murmur, trying to act not affected by his remarks. She truly was adorable sometimes, and it was quite amusing how she seemed to be so new in this type of situation. He didn’t want to compare Fil to the other women he went out with, as it felt like an insult to her. But he couldn’t help it.
After all, if this was another woman, they would’ve been making out just to pass the time. Yet, here he was, humoring her and getting satisfied with just seeing her reaction. It didn’t feel less boring either.
’If only she knew what a great company she was.’
