Chapter 145: No matter who they are

Chapter 145: No matter who they are

"So?" Marcus smacked his lips, changing the topic so Fil wouldn’t feel so awkward anymore. "What is this, by the way?"

Marcus moved the item she purchased just now. "You seemed too secretive when buying it."

"Right." Fil hummed for a moment, still hearing Valerie’s voice while talking to the staff. Valerie sounded offended and was now berating the staff.

"Since it seemed we’re stuck here, I guess I’ll just give it to you now." Fil offered the paper bag back to him. "It’s for you."

"For me?" he repeated, and she nodded, accepting the paper bag with furrowed brows. "Is this a repayment for the earrings?"

"It’s not a repayment since the earrings are surely ten times more expensive," she shrugged. "You gave me a gift. So I have to return the favor. Didn’t I tell you before? I don’t like owing people. I liked settling scores as soon as I could."

"You didn’t have to." He sighed. "I bought you the earrings because they’re pretty and I want to see you wear them."

"Then it’s the same for me." Her lips stretched from ear to ear while he furrowed his brows. "I also bought it because I want to see you wear it."

Marcus squinted his eyes suspiciously but said nothing. After staring at her for a moment, a sigh escaped him. He took out the small box inside, furrowing his brows as a note was glued on top of it.

[I always like doing matchy things. Should we try it?]

The lines between his brows deepened, smiling at the short note, which was for sure handwritten by her. He glanced up at her before opening the gift.

"I am not wearing an earring," he warned, making her giggle. "I like you, but no matter how much I do, I won’t go to a party wearing a woman’s earring..."

Marcus trailed off as soon as he opened the small box, revealing a pair of silver plating cufflinks that had a small amethyst stone in it. His brows rose. Although the color was much darker than her earrings, they almost looked the same.

"The attendant said it would look good with your skin tone," she winked. "And with your face, it won’t look odd at all."

"And you believed her because?"

"Because she used a convincing argument? You’re handsome and anything you wear will look nice." she tilted her head to the side. "It’s okay if you don’t want to use it, but I won’t accept it back. I already paid for it. Don’t even think of sending me back the money. I’ll argue with you."

"Who said I want to send it back?" he laughed, setting his eyes back on her gift. "This is our first gift to each other. No matter how much of a jerk I am, I don’t want to upset you."

"Will you wear it tomorrow?"

"That depends." Marcus closed the gift as he looked at her. "Filomena, you are sly."

"What did I do?"

"I’m saying that because it’s a nicer term than the other terms I could think of," he remarked, smirking in amusement. "You questioned my morality because of my indulgence in the thrill our setup brings to the table, but it seemed like I’m not the only one."

Marcus twisted his body and leaned his side against the settee. "Going to the same party and wearing matchy accessories, giving subtle hints... it’s exciting, isn’t it? Since we both know people will notice the accessories individually, maybe point it out, but won’t think too much thought of it due to the lack of connection."

"I didn’t think that far ahead, but I’m surely understanding you more," she quipped. "Wear them tomorrow. It might make me proud."

"Too bad I can’t score." He hissed, sucking air through his gritted teeth as he leaned back. "A kiss would make this moment perfect."

"This is perfect the way it is." Fil crossed her arms in front of her. "Stop giving me ideas. It didn’t work for the past twenty years. And it won’t work now too."

"Right. Marriage first."

"Yep."

"So, if I marry today, that’s okay?"

"That’s not the real question here." She smirked. "The question is, will I even agree to marry you?"

Marcus chuckled once more, amused by this banter. "I’m honestly running out of clever things to say."

"I never heard anything clever today, though."

"Alright, that’s it." He lowered his head, sporting a solemn look. "Where do you want to eat after this? It seemed they were escorting her out."

"You’re changing the subject."

"I am because I’m losing."

Fil pressed her lips to resist laughing triumphantly. "Fine. I won’t gloat."

She then intuitively turned her head to the wall, where the sound was the loudest.

"Before that, I’m curious," she hummed. "Don’t you and Valerie get along well? How come you just let her embarrass herself outside?"

Marcus raised his brows, tilting his head to the side. "If I came out, she’ll know I’m with someone."

"But she won’t know who it was," she argued. "I honestly thought you’d go out and help her a bit. You always do that. You’re like a big brother to her."

"True." He nodded, pleased at how quickly Fil picked things up. "But then, she hurt you."

"Huh?"

"After harassing you, she came to my office. Before I could even ask what made her angry, Vincent came right after," he explained nonchalantly, not knowing he was giving her a glimpse of what went down on Valerie’s side.

It was interesting. After all, Fil had no idea what happened to Valerie aside from the frozen credit card she found out just now.

"He slapped her," he added nonchalantly. "And they fought in my office."

"He slapped her?"

"Mhm. First time I’ve seen him hit his sister."

"And in your office?"

Marcus nodded. "In my office and in front of me."

"Wow." Fil was rendered speechless for a moment. "That — that’s... embarrassing."

"I don’t mind their banters on normal days," he chuckled, holding himself back from saying it entertained him sometimes. "But when I heard what she did, it pissed me off. I don’t want to see her after that."

"And that’s it?" she wondered curiously. "I’m not saying you’re making a bad decision, but you were like a brother to her and she’s like a little sister to you. You can’t just throw away the years and memories you built with them just because they misbehaved."

His lips stretched, but it didn’t reach his eyes. "After certain things happen, you just don’t feel the same way about people. No matter who they are."
