Chapter 143: Wrap them up
Chapter 143: Wrap them up
Marcus slid his eyes to the corner, gazing at Fil as she stared at the pair of diamond earrings with a purple sapphire in it. She hadn’t said anything for an entire minute now and just stared at them.
"You should try them on," he suggested. "They’re beautiful."
Fil didn’t take her eyes off of it, smiling. "Should I?"
Marcus just smiled subtly as he looked up at the staff across the transparent counter. "Let her try it on."
"Of course." The male staff smiled warmly, taking out the most expensive and rarest pair in their shop. He placed the display box on top of the counter, explaining to them the rarity of the earring and how it was crafted by the best jeweler in the world.
"It’s also like the color of your eyes, miss," the male staff added with a kind smile. "I’m sure this will suit you like no one else."
"Sweet talker," Fil chuckled, sanitizing herself and the earrings before trying them on. When they were dangling in her ears, she stared at the mirror in awe. "They’re beautiful."
"Wrap them up."
Fil snapped back to reality and intuitively turned to Marcus. "Wait, I haven’t —"
"They’re beautiful," he remarked before she could even complain, placing his hands on her shoulder and turning her around to face him squarely. He gazed at her slightly surprised expression and then smiled in satisfaction. "It seems he’s right. This pair will suit you like no one else. It’s my first gift to you. I’d like to see you wear them tomorrow."
Her lips parted as she wanted to argue with him. But seeing that gentle yet adamant look in his eyes, she knew it was futile.
"If you’re going to pay, why not?" she humored, making him chuckle. "Thank you."
"You’re welcome." He winked, retrieving his hands from her shoulder to take out his wallet. Clipping his card in between his index and middle finger, he handed it to the staff.
The staff accepted the card with both his hands, smiling so happily at the couple before running the card for the pair of earrings. As he left, Marcus set his eyes back to Fil.
"Is that all you need?" he asked. "Or do you want to check other stuff too? You might realize you are forgetting something."
"Even if I was forgetting to buy something, I’d rather not."
"And why is that?"
"You’re gonna insist on paying for it," she pointed out, making his brows rise. "And I will refuse, but then, you’re going to argue with me using convincing logic until I have no choice but to accept. Because if I don’t, I’ll look like a jerk and nonsense. So... I’ll have to tell you now that’s all I need."
The corner of his lips curled up in amusement, biting his lips to stop his laughter from escaping. Fil, on the other hand, smirked triumphantly.
"We’ll get along," he pointed out playfully. "Really really well."
"Hopefully, for a long time too." She grinned, facing the attendant as he returned.
The male staff handed them the bag with a giant smile on his face. Marcus offered to carry it before Fil could take it, using the gentleman’s card as an argument. In the end, Fil let him do what he wanted, and they left the store.

They were about to leave the mall, but then Fil remembered she had to buy something else. However, this time, she told him not to offer his card for payment. It was a long discussion between the two of them, but eventually, Marcus raised a white flag.
Fil could be quite a handful if she wanted to.
With that being said, they headed to a different store.
Fil glanced over her shoulder, catching Marcus on the waiting couch talking on the phone. She pressed her lips into a thin line, facing the female attendant of the store.
"Are these all there is?" she asked quietly.
"Yes, Miss," the employee answered in a whisper as well because she requested to be discreet about it. "These are all the stock we have."
Fil nodded and gazed down, both of them hiding behind the rack of clothes to hide the fact she wasn’t buying a pair of heels. Instead, the employee was holding a small placement table for men’s accessories.
"Oh," Fil whispered as she spotted something, picking it up and looking at it in awe. "This is perfect."
Her lips stretched into a satisfied smile, looking back at the female attendant. "Wrap this up for me."
"Sure."
"And can you wrap it as a gift?" she added before the staff could leave.
"Certainly." The staff nodded. "Do you want me to hand you a note card as well?"
"I would love that."
"This way, please."
Fil nodded in satisfaction, following the attendant of the store’s VIP clients. So far, in every shop they visited, they were accommodated as VIP guests and would lead them to the store’s private lounge for VIP guests. For most people, this would make them feel special. But for Fil, she had to swallow the shame she felt every time.
Who wouldn’t feel embarrassed? This only showed that Marcus was a regular here. Who knows how many women he took here and how many of them had met these same employees? She could already imagine the ’pity’ or ’ridicule’ from them. It wouldn’t be surprising if some of them had already turned this into their entertainment and made a bet.
The thought was awful, but well, she had to suck it up for the bigger picture.
Fil followed the attendant to the counter, wrote down a small note, and then handed it to her before paying for it. After that, she returned and joined Marcus in their private lounge, where there were just the two of them.
"Yes. Good work," said Marcus on the phone while watching Fil approach. "Alright. I’ll check on it later."
He slowly hung up the call, smiling at her as she sat down beside him on the settee. "Got what you need?"
"Yep." She smiled in satisfaction. "I’m just waiting for it."
"Should we have dinner first before going home?"
"Hmm." Fil pondered about it, making him squint his eyes. She grinned. "Of cour—"
Fil couldn’t finish her answer as she suddenly heard a familiar bratty voice from the other side of the private lounge.
"How come my card is still frozen?! Mom!"
Marcus and Fil intuitively stared at each other, both recognizing the voice almost immediately. After all, there was only one person they knew who could pitch such a hissy fit.
Valerie.
