Chapter 142: Want to see the end of it

The weekend ended peacefully for Fil and Jackson, spending the remaining hours bonding over his trip with her family. The rest of the week after that also went by in a blur. There wasn’t anything noteworthy for the rest of the week.

Aside from the constant phone calls from Vincent, over kindness from her colleagues, gifts from her suitors, and Fil ignoring all of them. Everything became a part of her routine now. Although something had been bothering Fil every single day.

Marcus never contacted her after dropping her off at the hospital that day.

’He still hadn’t reached out,’ she thought, tilting her phone to check. ’Don’t tell me he already got the clarity he wanted?’

Fil mentally sighed, getting stressed over it. Marcus just couldn’t end things with her. Not when he just told her he was dating her to marry. Did he cower and realize he couldn’t win against Vincent?

’Gee!’she mentally hissed. ’I can’t let that happen.’

"Fil?" Elise’s voice snapped Fil back to the current lapse, making the latter turn her head to the cubicle next to hers. "Are you okay? You’ve been checking your phone more often than usual. Are you waiting for a call?"

"It’s nothing," Fil reasoned out. "What were you saying?"

"I was asking if you have plans today." Elise blinked innocently. "It’s Friday today and not just that, but we have a company dinner tonight. Are you coming?"

"Oh..." Fil rocked her head. "That slipped my mind."

"How come? Everyone’s been talking about it the whole day."

"I was busy."

Elise puffed her cheeks. "Busy counting how many times you were asked if you’re coming?"

"What?"

"Fil, are you okay?" Elise tilted her head to the side. "I’m like the nth person to ask if you’re coming tonight, and also, I asked you this question for the fourth time today. You kept saying you hadn’t thought about it."

"Oh." Fil nodded, now coming back to her since Elise mentioned it. She smiled and said, "I haven’t thought of it."

"Geez."

"Hey there, ladies!" Just then, Oliver, one of their workmates, turned up in front of Fil’s desk. "You girls coming tonight?"

Elise immediately frowned, looking at Oliver in dismay. "That’s your third time asking."

"I hadn’t thought about it." Fil forced a smile before she gathered her stuff. "Maybe I’ll swing by or not. I have a party to attend tomorrow, so my mind is a little preoccupied."

"I should’ve known you weren’t coming when you said ’you’d think about it’ the first time," Elise murmured, glaring daggers at Oliver. "This is your fault."

"What? How come it’s my fault? I don’t control Fil’s mind."

"It’s because you were coming. That’s why."

Oliver gasped in disbelief, hands across his chest. "Who told you I’m coming?"

"You’re not?"

"No, I’m not coming." Oliver rolled his eyes. "I’m going to meet Kenzo tonight. So, I am here to ask if you aren’t coming to the company dinner, let’s meet him."

Fil stopped and glanced up at Oliver. "Why is he meeting you?"

"Err... because he’s bored? He also got his cast removed today. I think he’s going to come back next week or the week after this one." Oliver shrugged. "He didn’t tell you?"

"No. I know he’s getting better. Though I didn’t know when he was coming back." Fil rose from her seat after cleaning up her desk. "Have fun, you guys. Tell him I say hi."

With that being said, Fil took her things and walked away. Oliver and Elise couldn’t even say anything as they stared at her back. After a minute, they looked at each other.

"Is she okay?" asked Oliver, only for Elise to shrug.

"That’s also my question for the entire day."

*********

Company dinners were always one way for the company to ’reward’ or show their appreciation to their employees. Not that their company was a bad one who paid their employees with the bare minimum. For the employees, company dinners were a way to bond with each other. However, Fil didn’t feel like attending for the reason everyone already liked her.

Therefore, she would rather go home, hit the gym, and play house with Jackson. Maybe consult with him on what to do with Marcus. But alas, when Fil reached the parking space, she figured she didn’t need to consult Jackson anymore.

Stopping steps from her designated parking space, Fil gazed at the person leaning against her truck.

Marcus.

Marcus slowly raised his head, his lips curling up as soon as he met her eyes. He peeled his back from her truck, standing up straight.

"What are you doing here?" she asked as she advanced in his direction, stopping two steps from him. "I thought you already got your clarity."

"I thought you didn’t want the clingy type, so I had to control myself," he reasoned out with a shrug. "Also, I thought you’d missed me if you didn’t hear from me. Obviously, you didn’t."

’I didn’t, but it worried me,’was what she wanted to say.

"That’s not the reason, is it?" she called out calmly while holding his gaze. "Did you think Vincent and I got back together?"

His smile didn’t reach his eyes. "Yes."

"I knew it."

"We’re you disappointed?" he asked, tilting his head to the side.

"No."

"Then if I say I came here because I decided to pursue you regardless if you two got back together, will you feel disappointed?"

Deep lines appeared between her brows at his honest question. How was she supposed to answer that when that was what she wanted?

"I made a lot of thinking for the entire week and I realized I can’t stop now," he explained. "Not now, when I already risked a lot, just by asking you out."

"Are you suggesting that I should keep seeing you even if by chance I reconciled with Vincent?" Disbelief laced her voice, but that wasn’t enough for him to give her a different answer. "Vincent and I didn’t reconcile, but this is... why?"

He shrugged again. "I want to see the end of it. Don’t tell me you’re not curious about where that connection would go. Or am I the only one who thought we had a connection?"

Silence descended on them as they held each other’s gaze. Having him back on track was good for her, but for some reason, she felt threatened by his bold confidence. He wasn’t being sneaky anymore, but rather, he had become vocal and honest about his plans.

’Whatever this guy is planning,’she thought. ’I have to be careful from this moment onward.’

"I hope you have a guy who can drive my truck home," she spoke after a prolonged silence, making him smile in satisfaction. "I’m going to attend Vincent’s grandfather’s party tomorrow and I have to buy some things. You suggested shopping the last time; should we do it now?"

Marcus opened his palm, wiggling his brows knowingly. "I know a few places. I also need a little help because I’m also attending a party tomorrow."

Her lips slowly curled up, chuckling as she shook her head. She then clasped his hand, and he smiled brightly as his fingers wrapped around hers.
