The Devil's Good Girl -
Chapter 126: Feels funny
Chapter 126: Feels funny
The light from the phone stole Fil’s attention, making her stop applying her moisturizer as her eyes fell on her phone. She had kept it on mute the whole day, knowing she didn’t want distraction with today’s agenda. But since Marcus took the bait earlier than expected, Fil had no reason to ignore Jackson.
"Oh, it’s not him," she muttered as she checked the sender.
The corner of her mouth curled up because the first thing that welcomed her was a selfie of Elijah and Jackson. By the look of it, the two were chilling by the pool.
"Goodness. It looks like they’re having a lot of fun," she commented, checking the other photos Elijah sent.
Elijah kept her updated ever since they arrived at the private resort. There were pictures of the lobby, her parents sitting in the waiting area, Elijah’s selfies, and bits of captions for each. Her little brother even sent her some clips of his room, their parents’ suites, and then photos from a restaurant with Jackson. Jackson left a little late, hence, he probably arrived around lunch.
"This is so good," she whispered, smiling from ear to ear. "Mom and Dad are really in vacation mode. I hadn’t seen them wear something really nice for a long time."
Even though Fil bought her parents new clothes they could wear, her parents liked wearing the ones they had grown used to. They kept telling her their old clothes were comfortable. It wasn’t like she didn’t understand that, but even so, she always felt helpless.
So, seeing her mother rocking a floral dress and her father’s summer blouse made her heart soften up. They looked stress-free and relaxed; pictures of them chilling by the pool or drinking a cocktail were enough to make Fil happy. There were also photos of her father and mother talking to Jackson.
"Now, I’m actually jealous of them," she pouted, raising her brows when a notification appeared on top of the screen. She pressed her lips into a thin line, checking the message that polluted her happy moment.
[From: Marcus
Home.]
"I didn’t think he’d update me," she mumbled, but then, remembered Marcus was the type to have the energy to exchange messages. "Or was that his way to show me his interest?"
Either way, she was already in the situation she created herself. Might as well keep the momentum.
[To: Marcus
I’m torn between giving you a good response or something else. Which one do you think is best?]
[From: Marcus
Just be you.]
[To: Marcus
I am being me, but I don’t think you’re being you.]
[From: Marcus
I messaged you before. I thought you realized that by now.]
[To: Marcus
Now I do.]
Marcus, who had just arrived at his place and still idling in the entryway of his apartment, chuckled. He smacked his lips, humming his way inside his place. When he plopped his butt down on the couch, he held his phone and typed something. However, instead of sending his message, he deleted it and replaced it with something else.
[To: Fil
Can I call?]
[From: Fil
Why?]
Marcus hummed as he pondered, and despite not receiving direct permission, he called her anyway. Putting the phone leisurely in his ear, he listened to it ring a few times. If this was someone else, every ring also meant his patience and temper burning. But to her, he was patient.
Perhaps it was because he expected her not to answer. And yet, she picked up at the last ring.
"I am putting on my moisturizer," she said as soon as the line connected. "You’re on speaker mode."
"Will someone else hear me?" he asked playfully. "Let me know, so I know what I should say."
"Mr. Piggy is listening."
"Mr. Piggy?"
"Mhm. He’s very strict. So, don’t say anything funny. You don’t want him meddling with your business."
Marcus arched a brow, wondering who was this Mr. Piggy. He knew it couldn’t be a person, but he also didn’t know if Fil had a pet. As far as he knew, she didn’t have a pet.
"Fine," he surrendered. "Going to sleep now?"
"After this, maybe?"
"Want to go out tomorrow?"
"Well, I don’t know." Fil paused on applying another layer of cream on her face, eyes falling on the phone. "I promised Kenzo to visit him."
"Kenzo?"
"Did you forget?" Fil hummed. "Kenzo was mugged and was hospitalized. I planned to check on him tomorrow."
"I see." A deep frown dominated Marcus’s face at the thought of Kenzo and Fil. "You’ve been checking on him regularly?"
"We’re friends and also, he’s part of my team. It’s only natural to check his well-being." Fil put down the small jar and then picked up her phone, holding in before her lips. "Do you want to tag along?"
"You want me to come with you?"
"Mhm. You know Kenzo."
"And he knows about Vincent."
"He won’t say anything, but if you don’t want to go, then I’m not available tomorrow." Fil smiled, simply messing with him just because it was fun. "Don’t worry, no hard feelings."
Marcus leaned back and rested the back of his head on the backrest. "Did you think I don’t want to see him together because he might talk to Vincent?"
"I’m not angry about it. It’s my idea not to disclose anything to anyone."
"I’m not worried even if he tells Vincent, but I’m worried you’re probably still not ready," he explained. "But if you say he won’t talk, then sure. I trust your judgment."
Deep lines appeared on her brows. "You’re coming?"
"Mhm. You invited me, and who knows when you’ll be free again?" Marcus shrugged. "I’ll take every chance I can get, knowing I’m not the priority."
"Oh."
"What’s with the sudden change of tone?" Marcus squinted his eyes. "Don’t tell me you don’t want me to come?"
"No. I’m just... surprised, that’s all." Fil rolled her eyes and cleared her throat. "Vincent never liked him, after all."
Marcus snickered bitterly. "Vincent again?"
"Can you blame me?"
"No, but I told you. I’m not him." Marcus spread his arm on the couch. "Though I am starting to feel funny about it. See you tomorrow?"
Fil hummed, rocking her head slightly. "Sure."
With that being said, they silently agreed to end the call. As Fil put down the phone, she looked at it with shock.
"I thought he would avoid Kenzo," she muttered. "But he’s okay with it. Should I cancel? Kenzo might not be ready to see his attacker."
*****
While Fil found herself in a dilemma, Marcus idled on the couch. He tossed the phone aside right after she hung up, his affectionate smile fading, replaced by a layer of frost.
"Vincent... and then now, Kenzo," he muttered coldly. "They’re starting to sound annoying now, but I guess meeting that Kenzo is better before he says anything to her."
After giving it some thought, Marcus reached out for his phone and dialed a number. After letting it ring, he waited for the other person to pick it up. He smirked when the line connected.
"It’s me," Marcus spoke. "I have a question. Do you think Fil would let me stay overnight in her place if I came looking a little more drunk?"
There was a long silence in the line before Kenzo’s voice was heard. "What do you want?"
"Meet me tonight."
