Chapter 124: Learning from people’s mistakes

"I didn’t know you and Anton were that close. I’m not putting malice on it, don’t misunderstand. It just shows I have a lot of things to know about you."

Fil walked slower, head turned at Marcus. Her lips curled up a little, taking a cute little step toward him, and hooked her arm around his. Her action made his brows rise in surprise.

"What are you doing?" he asked, stopping in his tracks. "Are you drunk?"

"What do you think?" she playfully smirked, leaning her side closer to him. "Am I drunk?"

Marcus squinted his eyes. "Filomena, are you trying to make me happy?"

"No?" Fil giggled. "I just don’t want to hurt you."

"You don’t want to hurt me by...?"

"Knowing I won’t like you." She grinned while he arched a brow, letting him go just as casually. "I just thought that if I try hard to push you away, you might think of it as a challenge. So, clinging to you just like how your every other girlfriend did might make you cut me off some slack."

Marcus snickered. "Nice try. It might work." He remarked, taking her hand securely. "We’re officially and secretly dating right now. So, I think holding hands is okay?"

"I held on to your arm, but it didn’t work," she murmured, rubbing her chin mildly. "Did I not cling enough?"

"Haha." Marcus slowly faced her, looking at her in amusement. He squeezed her hand and then pinched her cheek mildly. "If you want to be just like those women in my past, then you should know how we spend our nights together."

Fil instantly backed away, looking at him in disgust. Yet, her reaction only earned a big laugh from him.

"That joke is not funny," she huffed. "Also, can you let go of my hand?"

"Planning to be the vengeful woman now? That might work too."

"I am vengeful, Marcus." She leaned her face forward, winking. "People call me extreme. Watch out."

"I will, but I will still like to hold you." He smiled, raising their hands between them. "For some reason, it feels... good."

He snapped his eyes up. "Fil, just don’t do anything."

"Hmm?"

"Just let me pursue you, chase you," he clarified. "Pushing me away might make me take that as a challenge, but clinging to me might just give the same effect. I might get addicted to the attention and affection. So, you don’t have to do anything."

A moment of silence dawned on them, eyes locked with each other. To be honest, Fil was the more astounded by this development. She knew Marcus had picked up every little hint she dropped in the past weeks. However, she didn’t expect him to be so... affectionate.

If only she didn’t know what this man was capable of, she would fall for this. But then again, did Marcus actually think he was in love?

’There’s only a fine line between love and obsession,’she thought, offering him a subtle smile. ’For a man who never loved nor obsessed over someone, this might be easy.’

"Fine," she said, nodding. "I won’t try anything if that is what you want."

"Did you say that because you agree or it’s because you think if you agree with me, it’ll make you fall in that category you created?" he tilted his head to the side, watching her lips curl up slightly. "You’re silly."

Fil chuckled, holding his hand back as she resumed her steps. "I like dating," she broached as they started to walk again. "It makes my heart flutter and makes me a little more playful."

"Were you like this before?"

"Pretty much." She nodded, eyes ahead. "Whenever things are bad between Vincent and me, I always think of the time we’re still dating. It was fun. He used to be so carefree and innocent. Now, he’s just... a little bit too much."

"Will this dating center about us, or you and Vincent?"

"He’s your friend," she pointed out, casting him a knowing look. "I agreed with your offer, but at the same time, I still feel this is wrong."

"Do you think you’re cheating?"

"Apparently." She shrugged. "Although I’m single right now, it still feels like I’m cheating on him with his best friend. It’s kind of messed up."

"I know, right?"

Fil slowly looked back at him, brows arched. "You feel the same?"

"You’re single, but then, you’re still his ex," he remarked honestly. "Of course, I feel that I’m betraying him."

"Yet, you still asked me out."

"I know. That’s why it’s messed up." He chuckled bitterly. "But I’d rather betray him and apologize in case this didn’t work out than lose my mind right now."

"You’re hopeless." Fil shook her head, earning a short chuckle from him. "I guess that makes the two of us."

Marcus smiled affectionately, casting her a sidelong glance. "Do you feel sorry?"

"Hmm?"

"About going out with me while Vincent is still trying to win you back?"

"Of course. Do you?"

"Unfortunately, no," he confessed, setting his eyes ahead while holding her hand tightly. "Say, Fil. Do you think Vincent had been faithful to you all these years?"

This time, Fil stopped in her tracks and faced him. "Don’t tell me you’re going to tell me he was cheating?"

"No?" Marcus faced her with a smile. "We’ll argue if I do because you’ll think I’m simply trying to make sure he wouldn’t have any ticket to win you back. The idea is good, but like I said, I don’t want to argue with you."

"Vincent might have changed, but he won’t do that to me. We talked about that," Fil reassured. "He knew that if there’s a third party involved, our relationship is as good as dead. I will never forgive him."

"I heard." Marcus smiled, only to raise his brows when she squinted her eyes. "What?"

Fil didn’t answer, but took a step closer to him. "You," she pointed a finger at him. "Once you get your clarification, tell me. Don’t cheat on me. We’re not officially together, but I think I deserve that much."

"Sure." He nodded, lifting her hand to his lips and planting a kiss on her knuckles. Keeping his eyes on her, he added, "But do you know, Fil? I always learn from other people’s mistakes."

Marcus put down her hand, only to tuck a portion of her hair behind her ear. "It’s the reason I got this far," he dawdled as he met her mesmerizing eyes again. "I’m not going to make the same mistake Vincent did. If I did, walk away because it won’t be healthy for you."
