The Devil's Good Girl
Chapter 119: Something different

Chapter 119: Something different

Ever since Kenzo spewed all that kind of nonsense rationalization, it kept flashing in Fil’s mind like crazy. It was bad, but she couldn’t let it affect her. In this relationship that was founded by lust, motive, and revenge, whoever falls first would lose everything.

Fil didn’t want to lose; she didn’t want to lose her revenge plan, and she didn’t want to lose Jackson. At least, not right now. Maybe once these fleeting emotions passed, she could let him go.

"How can I make your coffee if you’re clinging to me like this?" Fil muttered, eyes down. "Wait for me in the living room."

Jackson didn’t respond, hugging her even tighter.

"Fine," she sighed, taking a step to the side, and then stopped. She glanced over her shoulder because he also made a step so as not to burden her. "Stop acting cute. It’s suspicious."

This time, a smile turned up on his face, but said nothing. He clung to her while she moved to the coffeemaker, and then followed her tracks when she resumed in making breakfast. Meanwhile, Fil only shook her head, but let him cling to her like a shadow.

"Is it just me?" Jackson murmured, peeking at the pot on the stove. "This morning feels different. It feels special."

Fil licked her lips as she tasted the soup she was making, moving the spoon to him. "Want to have a taste?"

"Deflecting now?"

"I’m cooking," she returned. "There’s nothing to deflect."

Jackson raised his head a little, his chin still on her shoulder, eyes on her. He slowly opened his mouth and dropped the subject, tasting the soup she made. His brow rose in surprise, making her smile proudly.

"I’m a good cook, I know," she winked as she placed the tasting spoon down, and then turned around to face him. Fil rested her arms on his shoulder, looking at his handsome face. "Your coffee had gone cold."

"Just make me another one." He tilted his head and lowered his head to her. Jackson placed a light peck on her lips, and then another one.

Deep lines slowly resurfaced on her forehead, blinking every time his lips touched hers. He wasn’t kissing her like he used to, but he settled on giving her short and soft pecks. Her heart would jump mildly every time.

"What are you doing?" she blurted out softly when he stopped. "I only have a few hours before the shoot."

"I’m not doing anything." He smacked his lips and shrugged. "I just want to kiss you."

"Goodness. Acting cute won’t make me..." she trailed off, clearing her throat as she sported a nonchalant look. "This will be done in a minute. Go take a shower."

Jackson blinked, fluttering his eyelashes innocently.

"Fine," she surrendered. "Wait for me."

"That’s not what my expression meant," he pointed out. "But if you want to, I’d gladly shower with you."

Jackson slowly pulled her into his embrace, resting his hand on the back of her head. "Won’t you miss me?"

"Why would I?" she murmured. "And why are you hugging me?"

"Because I want to?"

"But you never... you never hugged me before." Fil slowly felt his arm loosened, looking up at him when he drew his head back a little. "At least, not before sex."

It was always a kiss first or a sensual touch. It didn’t cross her until now, but now that she thought about it, Jackson hadn’t embraced her like this. The only hug she gave him was a back hug. He would hold her after their intimate time, though.

It shouldn’t matter, honestly. But she couldn’t help but point it out. It was out of the pattern, after all. And if he kept doing this, it won’t help her in any way.

"You’re right," he nodded in agreement, only to pull her into his embrace once more. "I don’t think I ever hugged you like this. It’s always... in the back. Why not hug me back for a change?"

"Why are you doing this?" she whispered, slightly lowering her head. "Don’t tell me it’s because last night, I..."

"You, what?" he arched a brow, resting his chin on top of her head. "You made me cum with your mouth? Filomena, you make me sound so shallow. I told you, there’s something different this morning. I wonder what it was, but I’d rather enjoy it than ruin it with unnecessary questions."

Fil pursed her lips as she slowly clasped his back. "There’s nothing different this morning," she murmured, looking up at him. "You’re going on a vacation. Just say it. You’ll miss me."

"I will." He smiled brightly. "But I’ll make sure to send you updates."

"I don’t want to see it."

"Then don’t let your curiosity get the best of you."

"Are you really going with them?" she asked, frowning. "Why?"

"Because I want to?"

"Why do you want to?" she followed up, causing him to furrow his brows. "It’s not because you want to impress me, right?"

Jackson squinted his eyes slightly. "No."

"Are you sure?"

"Sweetheart, have I not impressed you enough?" he raised his brows knowingly. "If impressing you is my agenda, I could do it right here and now."

Jackson suddenly tightened his arms around her waist, lifting her until she was sitting on the counter. "I can impress you in so many different ways. Want to test it right now?"

"Forget it." Fil tapped his shoulder. "The soup needs constant stirring."

Jackson picked up the ladle and stirred the soup swiftly. After three stirs, he put the ladle back to where it was and faced her.

"Worried less now?" he cocked his head to the side. "Let’s hug more."

"Goodness." Fil sighed for the umpteenth time, now hearing the echoes of her heartbeat in her ear. "Just say it. You regret not inviting me on this trip."

He hissed and snapped his tongue. "I do. Should I wait for you?"

"I have other things to do." She rested her hands on his shoulders, smiling subtly. "Thank you, Jack."

"Thank me, for what?"

"For planning this trip." She shrugged. "You didn’t have to do this and —"

"They deserve it."

"Hmm?"

"Your mom and dad." His tone changed, sounding softer. "When was the last time they went somewhere for a vacation?"

Fil bit her inner bottom lips. "I can’t remember," she whispered, thinking her parents had been too busy providing for them they hadn’t had any break. Their worries now might have lessened because Fil could now provide for herself, but they still had Elijah.

"I’m doing this because I’m fond of them," Jackson clarified, smiling. "You don’t have to thank me for it."

"Still." Fil cupped his head, lowering her head to plant a soft kiss on him. "Thank you."

The two of them stared at each other in silence, with her hand on his cheeks. After a moment, Jackson moved his face closer while she slowly closed her eyes.

Jackson was right.

There was something different about this morning. It wasn’t like any other morning they spent together. It felt different. It was special. More like everything just felt right and in its rightful place. And somehow, even just for this morning, they were at peace.
