The Devil's Good Girl -
Chapter 118: Delightful
Chapter 118: Delightful
Beautiful.
Jack was truly the most beautiful man Fil had ever laid her eyes on. Be it with his eyes open or closed, be it with fire blazing in his eyes or playfulness swirling in them, he was mesmerizing. His laughter and every single tone of his voice were like music to her ear.
He was a delightful existence.
And this delightful sight had been Fil’s view every waking day. His face was even the last thing she would usually see in the night.
’This is bad,’ Fil told herself, hugging the pillow while keeping her eyes on the sleeping Jackson. ’Don’t... entertain the thought.’
Fil pressed her lips into a thin line, watching how the soft glow of the morning shone upon his beautiful face. For some reason, this morning was too warm and cozy.
’It doesn’t mean he makes time to take my family on a vacation. It should mean the entire world,’ she told herself, trying to rationalize something that was already clearly rationalized. ’He’s doing this because he liked them, and not because of me.’
But then again, how many times did Vincent, her longtime boyfriend and fiance, take time to bond with her family?
According to her memories, Vincent never went out of his way to bond with them. He never even gave Elijah the time of the day. Not that Vincent hadn’t met them in the past. He would come by in her place before, but with her. It wasn’t like Vincent was required to take care of her family too, but it would’ve been nice if he had done what Jackson was doing without a word.
’This is bad,’ she repeated in her mind, hearing her heart drum in her chest. ’Very much.’
Fil took another deep breath, raising her hand to brush some strands of his hair on his forehead. But just before she could touch him, she slowly closed her hand and retrieved it.
’I like him, but... as a person,’ she thought, mentally nodding in agreement. ’He can be insufferable and overbearing at times, but he’s a good person. His kindness... well, his kindness isn’t really kindness since he gets something in return.’
Everything was transactional between them.
He helped her, and she slept with him. Even now, their setup is like that. She had a bad day? He would make her forget. He wanted something? Then she would play along and try it.
’This is bad,’ she told herself for the umpteenth time this morning. ’I... don’t believe myself.’
No matter how she lists down the facts of their relationship without sugarcoating it, she couldn’t help but think there was something more in it. She wanted to believe there was nothing more in this, but the other part of her also believed it wasn’t as simple as that.
’To be loved...’ she whispered in her mind. ’Can I... really fulfill that task?’
Was that even a question?
Right now? She knew she couldn’t. It was why she introduced him to her family, who would accept him without conditions. But Fil? She didn’t even know what she was doing.
’I slapped myself to punish Valerie. I could’ve done things differently, maybe even better.’ Another deep sigh escaped her. ’If not for him, I wouldn’t even realize I’m heading to self-destruction.’
Fil drew another deep breath before pushing herself to sit up. She glanced at him again, holding the blanket over her bare chest. After staring at the beautiful specimen on the bed, she flung her legs out of the bed.
Picking up the robe on the floor, Fil went about her morning routine. Usually, Jackson would wake up before her. But today, he was sleeping like a child. She couldn’t blame him. He had a company to run and then used his extra time training her and spending the night with her. Well, he was practically living in her place.
When she finished and stepped out of the bathroom, Jackson was still sleeping. A subtle smile turned up on her face, heading out of the bedroom to make him breakfast. As she was preparing their breakfast in the kitchen, she paused and looked around the counter.
’It’s been a while since I made myself breakfast,’she realized, chuckling weakly. ’He always wakes up before me and...’
Her train of thought paused, and her smile slowly disappeared. Fil hadn’t realized until now that her life had been a lot easier. Since Jackson moved in, she couldn’t remember skipping breakfast. He had been taking care of her, and she hadn’t realized it because of his attitude. Even in the night, whenever she would take home some work, he would show interest and talk nonsense. However, in a way, he helped once or twice because he unknowingly gave her an idea.
’Even last night...’ Her cheeks turned red as she remembered last night’s passionate time. ’... he only left hickeys in an area no one else can see. I can even walk properly — though there’s a little discomfort. It was bearable.’
Was he careful, knowing she was going to film a music video with Anton?
A subtle smile appeared on her face as her eyes softened. The thought of canceling her commitment today briefly crossed her mind last night, but she didn’t think about it too much because she didn’t have the time. With how intense he was last night, she believed she would be a wreck this morning.
’Though my mind and heart are,’she remarked, shaking her head to get rid of the unnecessary morning thoughts. ’My body is fine. No need to disappoint Anton.’
Fil shook her head once more as she started cutting some onions. As she forced herself to focus on the preparation, she suddenly felt a pair of slightly cold arms snaking around her waist from behind. Her brows rose, glancing over her shoulder when she felt Jackson’s body pressing on her back.
Jackson closed his eyes, resting his cheek on her shoulder. "I’m thinking of retiring," he muttered, his voice a little coarse.
"Good morning too, Jack," she chuckled. "Sleep some more. I’ll just prepare breakfast."
"I’m already going back to sleep."
"Not in here, but in the bedroom."
"No point. You’re not there." He moved his head until the tip of his nose was touching the side of her neck. He locked his arms around her, pressing his body closer. "I like coffee in the morning."
[It doesn’t matter if you live in a mansion or a standard apartment. They’re all just a roof over your head, but not a place where you can say you’re home.]
’That Kenzo... I shouldn’t have talked to him,’she mentally grumbled because now she was subconsciously basing everything Jackson said and his actions on the idea. ’That’s why I called them poisonous ideas. They’re poison!’
