The Devil's Good Girl -
Chapter 111: A slice of heaven
Chapter 111: A slice of heaven
"Who’s that?" Kenzo asked, watching Fil turn off her phone after reaching his brother’s penthouse.
Fil looked back at him, putting his things down with a shrug. "Who else?"
"Vincent?"
"He’s been bugging me," she said, looking at him sitting on the large couch with his crutches on the side. "Are you hungry? Water? Anything?"
"Have you been in my brother’s home?" Kenzo asked out of pure curiosity. "How can you ask me that when this is not even your place?"
"I’m dating your brother."
"What?"
"Kidding." Fil chuckled. "Your brother gave me instruction when I told him I’m going to take you home."
Kenzo watched Fil head to the kitchen while explaining her side of the story. He shook his head and sighed.
"No wonder he didn’t come," he muttered, leaning back on the couch and looking around at the lavish penthouse.
Since Fil didn’t have her truck with her, his brother’s assistant came to pick them up. Kenzo didn’t ask many questions, but now, he sort of realized Fil and his brother talked about this.
"He didn’t have to do this," he grumbled, closing his eyes. ’Did he think just because I wouldn’t listen to him, he can make Fil do all these things?’
"Back!"
Kenzo peeked in his eye, seeing her carry a tray with some refreshments and snacks. "There’s an ice cream over there. You should’ve got one for yourself."
"This is not my place," Fil argued as she put down the tray on the coffee table, sitting on the same couch as him. "This muffin looks good. There are a lot of snacks in there. Your brother really prepared everything for you, huh?"
"If he did everything for me, he shouldn’t have prepared snacks in the first place." Kenzo let out another grunt, leaning over to get the cupcake. "I don’t like pastries."
That was true, was what Fil wanted to say.
"You shouldn’t be too harsh on him," Fil remarked. "He doesn’t deserve it."
"If only he gets married, my parents wouldn’t bug me to get married."
"Well, your brother does well in his job."
"Are you saying I don’t?"
"Unlike him, yes." Fil shrugged. "Sorry."
Kenzo opened his mouth but then shut it again. He only shook his head and took a bite.
"You’re not going to eat?" he arched a brow after a minute, sliding his eyes to her. "That’s not nice."
"I’m full. I just had lunch with Elise before seeing you." Fil leaned back comfortably, looking around the penthouse. "This place is very luxurious."
"You want to live in a place like this?"
"Not really. It’s too big for me to live alone." Fil still assessed the penthouse. "It’s just that... I find it really strange."
"What, strange?"
"That we’re engineers. We design these kinds of buildings and work with architects and interior designers to have the best outcome. Yet, we don’t even live in one of them." Fil smacked her lips, refocusing her eyes on him. "You can live in this luxurious penthouse. Your family can afford it, yet you chose a small building that is far worse than your brother’s place."
"Fil, my place isn’t as good as this penthouse, but it’s also not bad," he reasoned out. "I thought you’d understand that more than anyone."
"Then you thought wrong." She frowned. "Not because we’re living the same lifestyle, doesn’t mean we’re the same."
"Because... my parents have money?"
"No. Because you got a choice whether to use what your parents worked so hard for or ignore them." She shrugged as she took the other cupcake from the tray. "It’s not like I don’t know you. Even so, I’m curious."
Fil faced him once again. "Why do people who can afford to live in this kind of place and have a lifestyle of what other people could only dream of would want to stay in a much smaller place?"
"Maybe... I don’t know?" Kenzo shrugged, finding it a little strange for her to ask such questions. It wasn’t like he didn’t give her enough explanation about his life decisions. But when he looked at her again and caught the same curiosity in her eyes, an answer he never gave her before slipped past his lips before he even knew it.
"Because it doesn’t matter?" he smacked his lips. "It doesn’t matter if you live in a mansion or a standard apartment. They’re all just a roof over your head, but not a place where you can say you’re home."
Fil and Kenzo stared at each other before she nodded in understanding.
"It’s... that simple?" she murmured, thinking about a certain individual who always elicited questions in her head.
"It’s that simple." Kenzo rocked his head as well. "Why are you asking?"
"Nothing in particular. I just wonder. That’s why."
"Wonder... who made you curious?"
"What do you mean, who?"
"We’ve been friends since forever. I know you," he pointed out. "You’re not going to ask such a simple question to others when the answer is obvious. Unless you really don’t know the answer or you don’t want to accept it."
Fil pressed her lips into a thin line. Slowly, she looked away from him and stared at the centerpiece on the coffee table.
"I met this person during my visit to the site. We talked, and he mentioned that he was living in this small apartment building. I’m aware of his status, so I also know he could afford a better place to stay. Yet, he kept squeezing himself in this cramped place," she explained, mixing truth and lie just to not give herself away. "He had a roommate, by the way."
She shrugged weakly. "I was curious why. No matter how much I think about it, I find it... strange."
Jackson had it all; money, looks, body, wits, and even skills. He was perfect except when he was talking. Yet, she couldn’t simply jump to a conclusion. That wouldn’t be good for her heart.
"He liked his roommate."
"Huh?" she furrowed her brows, looking back at him curiously.
"This person you’re talking about, he liked his roommate."
"How are you so sure about that?"
"Just because in his world, she’s not in there," he explained in the simplest way he could. "So, if she couldn’t be there, then it’s only natural to go into her world instead. Even if you get nothing in the end, being in the same world with her even for a fleeting moment, it’s worth it. It’s like getting a slice of heaven. He’s in love. Madly, deeply, but maybe he just couldn’t say it."
"How did you know he couldn’t say it?"
"If he could, he wouldn’t have concealed his reasons with his actions." He tipped his head. "Actions tell us many things, but at the same time, they can also throw us off into thinking something else."
"That’s... stupid."
"It’s not when there are more important things he wanted to protect aside from his feelings."
"Like?"
"I don’t know."
Deep lines resurfaced on her forehead, listening to him attentively. "Kenzo, why do you sound like you know these things? Have you ever been in the same situation before?"
A moment of silence dawned on them as Kenzo found himself in a tricky situation. He said too much, and now she was asking more than she should.
"I watched a drama," he blurted out. "That’s where I got the idea."
Fil squinted her eyes suspiciously. "Who is she?"
"Fil, it’s not —"
"Kenzo." She grinned mischievously while Kenzo pinched the bridge of his nose.
’I shouldn’t have said too much,’ he thought because now he knew she wouldn’t let it go. And he was right. During the entirety of Fil’s stay, she would constantly tease him and ask him about this mystery woman in his heart.
