Chapter 110: Romantic feelings kills a friendship

Chapter 110: Romantic feelings kills a friendship

"What happened to your face?" Kenzo asked in shock, looking at the faint swelling on her face and the cut on her lips. "Did you get into a fight?"

"Please, Ken." Fil rolled her eyes as she sat down on the chair. "I’m tired of hearing that today."

"People are worried," he stressed, flinging his legs out of the bed to sit on the edge, facing her. "I’ve only been here for a while, and you’ve become a delinquent?"

Fil frowned. "Now that’s new. No one told me I got into a fight on purpose."

"Did you?"

"No, Kenzo." She sighed, looking at him dead in the eye. "I got slapped for being naughty."

He furrowed his brows, cocking his head to the side.

"Valerie," she said, watching his mouth part as he rocked his head. "She confronted me because I dumped her brother."

"You did, what? You broke with Vincent?"

"Don’t act surprised, Ken. I told you." Fil shrugged nonchalantly. "Vincent was cheating on me with Marianne."

"And you dumped him? Finally?"

"Yes, but that’s not the reason we broke up."

"Huh?"

Fil smiled with her teeth. "It’s not that interesting. Anyway, that’s the tea I brought for you, since I heard you aren’t allowed to hold your phone."

"My brother is punishing me."

"You’re the one who is punishing yourself," Fil scolded mildly. "Olivia told me that you kept calling her about the project instead of resting. Your brother is simply saving you from killing yourself."

"I never heard someone die just because they want an update about a project."

"But people die out of over-exhaustion," she corrected. "So, you’re getting discharged today?"

"Yes." Kenzo nodded. "They can’t still take off my cast, but I’m all better. You’re here to help?"

"Why else would I be here?"

Kenzo smiled at her. "Did my brother send you?"

"Nope." Fil shook her head. "Your brother doesn’t need to tell me to come for me to make sure you won’t go home in your place."

"Fil."

"Living alone while being sick is not the best idea," Fil pointed out. "Everyone in the office is worried. So, I told Olivia I was leaving early. With my injuries, she agreed without making a huge fuss."

"Did she know you’re here?"

"Of course. I told her the injuries are only an excuse so the higher-ups won’t think she favors me," she added with a proud grin. "I don’t want to give her more trouble after seeing her go under fire just because she doesn’t want you out of the project. She even had to convince Mister Sisson to keep you on the team."

"She really is a terrible boss," Kenzo laughed weakly. "This is why she always gets the memo."

"She’s not terrible, but very... generous."

"In any case, that’s more reason for me to go back as soon as possible."

"Until you fully recovered," Fil stressed. "If you don’t want to go home to your parent’s home, why not stay with your brother? I’m sure he already offered."

Kenzo assessed the look on Fil’s face, letting out a deep sigh. "You won’t drop this until I agree, will you?"

"Nope." She shook her head. "I’m here to make sure you’re going anywhere else except your home."

"If you’re so concerned about me, why not take me home?"

"Ah?"

"It’s not a bad idea!" Kenzo reasoned out. "You’d be able to monitor me and I can sneak a look at the project’s progress. It’s a win-win for the two of us. Moreover, you’re single. No one will get angry anymore."

Except Fil already has a roommate; a roommate who thinks he owns the house, the building, and the tenant.

"..." Fil was rendered speechless, looking at him with puzzlement. "Are you serious?"

"Yes." Kenzo nodded. "We used to cram together back in college. You know I’m harmless."

"Are you sure you’re saying all this?" she gasped in horror, rising from her seat and marching toward him. Fil touched his forehead in case he was having a fever and was in delirium. His temperature was normal, though.

Kenzo, on the other hand, studied her quietly. "Pfft—!" he laughed out loud when he couldn’t take it anymore.

"Kenzo!" Fil exclaimed. "Stop messing with me."

"That’s what you get for acting like my mother," he retorted playfully. "But I’m serious. Unless you take me home, then I’d go home."

"My goodness. Why are you so stubborn?"

"I got beaten up because my parents kept forcing me to date people I don’t know." He pointed at his face to get his point across. "And my brother will nag me every minute of the day. Being there is worse than staying in this room with only the television to keep me entertained. I’d rather go home. I might get bored, but at least I’m in my own place."

Fil sighed helplessly, sitting beside him. "Please?"

"I had a tough time, but I’m not a cripple, Fil." He turned his head to face her. "I’ll be fine. No need to worry."

"Easy for you to say."

"I’m a grown man," he argued with a reassuring smile. "Do you think I won’t sneak out even if you drive me to my brother’s place?"

"I can’t drive you anywhere."

"Why? Did you finally dump your truck?" His eyes lit up as if relieved, only to see her sigh. "You didn’t?"

"It’s in the repair shop."

"Dumping Vincent is one thing, but letting go of your truck is just as important. Then how did you get in here? You commuted?"

"Anton drove me here," she explained, noticing the slight change in his expression. "Ken, why did you two break up? You said you used to be good friends and you even support his music secretly. Did you..."

She trailed off and squinted her eyes. "... fell for him?"

"What?"

"I’m not judging." Fil raised her hands in surrender. "It’s either you fell in love with him or he did. Love can make things awkward between friends, you know? Especially if the other one doesn’t feel the same. The worst possible result is that it’ll only kill the friendship."

Kenzo stared at her for a moment as she explained.

"You’re right," he smiled and nodded. "Romantic feelings can make things awkward between friends. That’s why things got awkward between us. Anton fell in love with me."

"What? I’m right? I was kidding, but did I actually get it right?"

"I’m being sarcastic." Kenzo clicked his tongue. "It’s nothing like that, Fil."

"Oh." Fil patted her chest, almost shocked if she was right. Meanwhile, Kenzo gave her a sidelong glance and shook his head.

"Just drop it. That’s a story about the past. I’m not pressing charges for a reason, but after what his friends did to me and him not having the balls to do anything, I don’t think I can still see him as a friend," Kenzo asserted. "Don’t talk about him anymore — and why are you two together again?"

"I’m helping him with a music video," she explained. "He went to see me just to make sure our schedule for tomorrow won’t be postponed."

"That’s what he said?"

"Yes."

Kenzo rocked his head, and heard her ask, "Why are you looking at me like that?"

"Nothing." He smacked his lips. "Anyway, fine. I’ll go with my brother, so you stop nagging."

"You won’t sneak out?"

"I won’t."

"Promise?"

"Promise." Kenzo raised a hand to his shoulder level. "Happy now?"

Fil grinned and nodded while he sighed and shook his head. "I’m going to arrange your things before your brother comes." She didn’t waste a second, jumping out of the edge of the bed to fix his things.

Kenzo, on the other hand, followed her figure with his gaze. Another deep exhale escaped him before he cast his eyes down. Slowly, a bitter glint flashed across his eyes.
