Chapter 109: The stubborn and the fool
Chapter 109: The stubborn and the fool
"I already said I’m fine, Anton." Fil drew her head away from Anton, seated in the front passenger seat while Anton was in the driver’s seat. "The company nurse already took care of me. This is not a fatal injury, so there’s no need for all these medicines."
Anton sighed as he retrieved his hand. "I wanted to see for myself, okay? Am I not allowed to worry about a friend?"
"You’re worried that this injury will postpone the filming," she corrected in a knowing tone. "Now that you’ve seen it, I bet you’re reassured. The swelling is already fine, and I will conceal the cut on my lips with lipstick. Tomorrow’s schedule will go on without a hitched."
"These medicines are not magic," she added, lifting the plastic bag full of medicines. "Thanks, but I’m not dying."
"You should act like this in front of Valerie," he grumbled. "How come you’re mean to me and not to her? See what happened?"
"She’s a kid," Fil argued. "She doesn’t know what she’s doing."
"She’ll be an adult in a few months. What are you saying? Valerie isn’t a kid anymore." He hissed, leaning back on the seat. "She hit you. You should hit her back."
"And if I hit her back, what do I get?"
"Do you have to get anything for defending yourself?" he scrunched up his nose. "You’re not a pushover, Fil. Why are you acting like one?"
Fil pressed her lips and shrugged again.
"If she did this again, grab her hair first. No one will blame you for that." Another deep exhale escaped him. "Anyway, where are you going? I’ll take you there. Your truck is in the repair shop, right?"
"Are you sure?"
"Why not? You’re doing me a favor, so driving you wherever you want is nothing. Are you heading home now?"
"No."
Anton furrowed his brows, waiting for her next words.
"I’m going to the hospital," she said. "Kenzo will be discharged today. I’m going to see him. He’s a stubborn fool. I’m afraid he will insist on going home, instead of going home to his parent’s home."
"Ah." Anton rocked his head in understanding.
"You don’t have to drive me there," she reassured. "I don’t want to make things awkward for you and Kenzo. Although I’m more concerned about what he’d feel."
"Why?" Anton raised his brows. "Did he tell you anything?"
Fil looked him dead in the eye. "Is there something he should tell me?"
"No, I mean, nothing."
"Anton, I heard about you and Kenzo." Fil smacked her lips, watching his brows rise a little more. "I’m saying I know about that story. So, I thought it might make things awkward for both of you."
"Ahh... that’s why." Anton rocked his head, starting up the engine of the car. "Nope, it won’t make things awkward for the two of us. That’s long ago, so don’t worry."
"Are you sure?"
Anton looked at her again and nodded. "Of course."
"If you say so." Fil shrugged, buckling her seat for a free ride.
With that being said, Anton drove away from the free parking slot near her office and hit the road. Silence reigned in the car for the next few minutes until Fil spoke.
"I’m curious, Anton," she cleared her throat, looking at his side profile. "Why?"
"What do you mean?"
"Why aren’t you and Kenzo’s friends anymore?" she hummed. "I heard you used to be so close until you’re not anymore."
"I thought he told you about it?"
"He told me what he wants to tell me, but I wasn’t that convinced about the reason for your fallout," she clarified. "I just thought there’s something more."
"Haha." Anton let out a weak chuckle. "Do you have any other good friends from high school or college? But now you’re no longer in contact?"
Fil kept quiet, staring at him intently.
"That’s what happened," he said. "It happens. One season, you’re good friends with certain people and groups. But then, you get separated and you’re not as close as you used to be. You meet a different set of friends and move on with life."
"I see." Fil rocked her head in understanding, keeping her gaze on him. "So, that’s what happened. You lost one precious friend and had a unique set of friends."
Anton shrugged. "I met new friends, and so he did."
"You met a new set of friends, so you are not friends with your previous friends anymore?" Fil murmured, staring at the window beside her. "That’s weird. It doesn’t fit the natural course of action."
"Is it?"
Fil cast him a sidelong glance but said nothing. Her question was out of pure curiosity. After all, she wasn’t lying. Kenzo told her a summary of his friendship with Anton in the past but just gave her a lousy explanation about the collapse of their friendship.
"Kenzo buys all of your albums," she said after a minute. "And he streams your music on every platform. I guess he still sees you as his friend, even if you don’t."
Anton cast her a quick look before refocusing his eyes on the road. The corner of his mouth curled up a bit.
"Is that so?" he muttered, his tone laced with a tinge of surprise and guilt. "He really is stubborn."
"He might be stubborn and a fool, but he’s a good person. I bet I don’t need to say that aloud because you already know."

"Thank you for the ride." Fil bent over outside the car, keeping the door open. "I’ll see you tomorrow?"
"Sure." Anton smiled, nodding. "See ya."
With that being said, Fil slammed the door closed and turned her back on him. Anton, on the other hand, kept his eyes on her retreating figure. As she approached the entrance, he set his eyes ahead and was ready to leave. But then he glanced at the hospital again.
Instead of leaving, Anton only drove to the parking space and went inside the hospital. He already knew which floor and room Kenzo was in. After all, it wasn’t his first time to go in here. He was the one who secretly called for the ambulance that night and he dropped by to check on him when he parted with his ’friends.’
Soon, Anton found himself outside the private ward where Kenzo was admitted. He stood there motionless, sighing as he peeked at the little window on the door. Fil and Kenzo were talking, and the latter seemed better than when he was brought in here.
[He might be stubborn and a fool, but he’s a good person. I bet I don’t need to say that aloud because you already know.]
A bitter smile turned up on his face, hands balled into tight fists.
’He is stubborn, but not a fool,’ he thought, turning on his heel to leave. ’The foolish one is me.’
