Chapter 78: Questions and answers (2)

"Her phone? Maybe it got lost in the maze," Jia suggested.

She shook her head. "The staff searched the nearby area where the accident happened, but they didn’t find the phone."

Did anybody from the ambulance pick it up?

She smiled. "Thank you. I will check the maze once again just to be sure."

"Sure."

"Bojing, will you accompany me?"

She found him lost in a daze as if he was thinking something deeply. "Bojing?"

"Ah!" He jerked his head towards Jia. "S-Sorry sis!"

"Are you okay?" She asked, concerned.

"Yes, yes!"

"Good then. I was asking if you would come with me to the maze to find Anhe’s phone. Don’t worry, there will be no ghosts this time," she softly chuckled.

He bobbed his head. "I will!"

From the other side, Xinyue said, "I will come too. Might as well get the chance to check out the horror house."

To that Lihua and Ruiling raised their hands. "Me too! Me too!"

Wei, Li and Lanying chose to remain outside to look after the children. The twins and Lan didn’t mind playing with Qingqing in the stroller even though Qingqing herself minded a lot.

Walking inside the horror house, Lihua and Ruiling felt the hair on the back of their necks stand upright with the chill in the air. They hugged each other by their arms, shivering and closing their eyes.

Xinyue glanced at the two cowering rabbits. "Are you two sure you would be helpful to us?"

"Wh-What do you mean!?" Ruiling tried to act brave. "This is just a warmup."

"For what? There ain’t gonna be any ghosts to jump at you. The attraction is closed."

"O-Of course we know that..."

He shrugged and put his hands in his pockets as he walked alongside Jia. "So what do you think?"

"H-Hm?" Jia threw him a questioning look.

"About the brats. What do you think of them?"

She cleared her throat. "Well even before this accident happened, I had kind of noticed a strain within the group. It’s not all flowers blossoming there."

"Hm."

"The girl Yong clearly dislikes or maybe even hates being a part of the group. She is very open in expressing that she was forcefully brought here."

"Go on."

"Daxia, well, it is a typical love triangle. Anhe is clearly interested in Shilin and I can see Daxia is too. She was very happy when she got to be in Shilin’s group when they were splitting groups."

Bojing chimed in. "Ye-Yeah, she was very mad when I was wa-walking between her and Shilin inside the second tunnel. She was throwing g-glares at me..." he covered his face, his eyes tearing up.

"Yeah that girl was sneakily sticking close to his side. I saw that too," Xinyue remarked. "What about the guys?"

Jia gave it a thought, tapping her hands. "In the horror house, I felt that Anhe’s dynamic with the guys seemed a little better. At least, it felt like they were the only proper group while Daxia and Yong were just tagging along."

"I see."

Jia looked at Xinyue’s indecipherable countenance.

He glanced at her and asked, "You have something in your mind, don’t you? I noticed you thinking something when they said that they never saw her."

"Oh. Well, yes. I found it odd because the first tunnel is a maze with mirrors attached here and there. The guys were lost at different parts of the maze but I just wondered if...whether nobody saw Anhe’s reflection through the roof mirrors? I just thought at some point somebody would have seen her passing by in one of those mirrors."

"Good point," he slightly nodded.

By that point, Ruiling and Lihua were sticking close to his side like glue. His brow twitched. "You are crowding me. Go away."

"..."

"How could you say that to your sister!"

"How could you say that to your girlfriend!"

Both complained unanimously. They ignored him and flew towards Bojing’s side.

As they reached the first tunnel, Xinyue cast a look across the layout too. The fog had seemed to settle down. "Oh. As a spy, this place tingles something within me. So many blind spots and so many spots to discover a secret as well," he smiled.

Ruiling grumbled. "How come you don’t say such romantic words to me?"

"Is this supposed to be romantic?"

"Of course, it does."

"Eek!" A thin branch hovered on Lihua’s head, and she let out a squeaky voice. She then coughed and gave an abashed look. "I wasn’t scared at all hehe..."

"A-are you okay, sis?"

He squeezed the adorable Bojing. "I am!"

Jia pointed at the place where Anhe was found collapsed. "She was here. There is a blood stain here on the wall. Let’s see if we find her phone here..."

"We better find it. That phone seems important," Xinyue said, casually brushing the leaves and vines. He instructed the scaredy trio to start looking for the phone.

Jia blinked her eyes and asked, "Why do you say that?"

"You didn’t see it because you were talking to that attendant but when she mentioned the phone missing, the group except Shilin and Yong gave a reaction. Just for a flash and just for a second but they did. It cracked their expression. Something is in that phone."

She looked thoughtful.

If that is the case, then Anhe’s accident at this time when her phone is missing seems a little suspicious.

They continued searching for the phone, checking in the nooks and corners of the surrounding walls. Jia pressed her lips and looked at Xinyue. After a few moments of back and forth contemplation, she asked, "Was I wrong when I said that Anhe and the guys’ group seemed to be on good terms?"

He turned and arched a brow at her. "Not when you might have made that assumption in the horror house. But that judgment should have changed when they were talking to you. Seeing them answer you with my eyes, I didn’t see they have any camaraderie for that girl. First of all, nobody really asked to go with Anhe to the hospital, didn’t they?"

She was taken aback but now that she thought back, she didn’t recall anybody wanting to go with Anhe.

"That’s some friendship. Their friend met with an accident, but nobody bothered to ask if they could go to the hospital with her? They looked too unfazed and unaffected. I am pretty sure friends should be a little more caring than that," he scoffed.

"That’s true."

"Secondly, they are hiding something. It was clear from their body language. Jinping was drinking water way too many times which I think might be his defense mechanism. Yibo got agitated and pointed fingers at Yong when she mentioned the group splitting. That’s a sign that something didn’t sit well with him about that. He was also hitting on you which could mean both things. That he wanted to flirt and also divert your attention from the fact that he could have possibly met her. And lastly, that guy Aang. He was standing way too still."

Lihua had a question mark on top of her head. "What is wrong with that? Don’t people usually fidget when they are nervous?"

"Yes but some people exhibit a neurological fight response instead of a flight response in an event of some danger. Instead of hiding, they prepare themselves for a confrontation which is why he probably had a very still and rigid stance. He was trying to show a calm demeanor. All three of them are hiding something."

Ruiling got tired of searching and leaned against a wall, catching her breath. As she looked up, she shrieked upon seeing a horrendous figure’s statue sticking out of the wall. "Heekk!!"

She stumbled back and caught a nearby lamp for support which dislodged with the sudden pressure and fell. It fell and cracked.

"..."

"S-Sorry..." she felt guilty of breaking the lamp.

A look of surprise flashed across everybody’s faces for a moment.

Xinyue craned his neck and raised his brow staring at the broken lamp. Taking out his handkerchief, he grabbed something to show it to everyone. "Good work, girlfriend. Our search ends here."
