Chapter 79: Hurling insults

Everybody stared at Xinyue holding the phone with awe.

Jia took the phone from him and studied it. Its glass had violent cracks in it as if a storm had ripped it apart. The rest of the body was almost shattered. Staring at the place where it was found, she couldn’t help but think...

"It’s a very odd place to be at, don’t you think?" Xinyue felt his spidey senses in action.

"Yes. It cannot be here unless somebody put it there. Certainly, the phone doesn’t have wings to fly at a place like this."

"How could this happen though...?" Bojing thoughtfully asked, "They s-said that none of them met Anhe."

"Clearly, somebody is lying," he smiled, "or maybe all of them. As I thought, the phone turned out to be important."

The phone looked broken beyond repair and just as Jia expected, it was not switching on after her futile tries. "It’s broken very badly."

Lihua scratched her head. "Why will anybody hide a broken phone?"

"Didn’t I just say the phone seemed important to the brats out there? There could be something inside the phone posing as a threat to them. Pay attention, little sister."

She glared at him. "I did pay attention! I meant why would the person bother hiding it away? Wouldn’t it have been smarter to let the phone by Anhe’s side? I mean, she fell, hit her head and all so anybody will naturally think that the phone broke when it fell from her hands, right?"

Her words earned her a very serious gaze from the two.

"W-what...? Did I say something dumb again?"

Xinyue covered his mouth with his palm. "I feel pathetic, little sister. Suddenly you made me realize that I don’t give you where credit is due. You actually made a valid point."

Lihua stumbled back, her eyes tearing up. "Di-Did you just praise me?" She hiccuped.

"Stop with those tears before that pride disappears."

"I will tell this to Wei!" She raised her arms up ecstatically. "He will be so happy for me!"

Ruiling, who was also praised by Xinyue for finding the phone, shared a deep, emotional hug with Lihua who couldn’t find words to express their bliss. "Xinyue appreciating somebody happens once in a blue moon! Let’s bask in this joyous moment!"

His dry gaze fell on his sister and girlfriend, who were hopping up and down like clowns to him. Bojing happily joined them too.

Jia tried to hold in her laughter, not letting the serious mode slip away. "A-Anyway. Lihua does make a point. It clearly doesn’t look like the phone broke just because it fell from Anhe’s hands. It’s in such bad shape that I can feel the resentment just by looking at the damage. Somebody really threw it very hard on the ground."

"He hid it because he knew that we would guess what happened by looking at its state. The phone has a sturdy back cover. It would have absorbed any impact had it fell from her hands and perhaps it did too. But when it was purposely thrown hard on the ground, it obviously couldn’t bear the force of the hit. Yeah, ghosts don’t seem to be behind the accident."

As if right on the cue, the ringtone of Jia’s phone buzzed within the maze walls, and she saw Mingshen’s number flashing on it.

"Spicyyyyyyyyy!"

His ever so overzealous voice vibrated through the phone’s speaker.

"Do you have any idea just how much I missed you? It’s so boring when I don’t get to irritate you. You must be missing me too, don’t you?"

"Don’t you dare bully my sister, you psycho doctor!" Fumes of anger escaped Lihua’s head.

"Oh my, whose voice do I hear? Is that little chilli? What are you doing with Spicy?"

"Hmph! We were helping sis find Anhe’s phone and we found it too."

"We?"

"Bro, Ruiling, Bojing and I."

"Aren’t you all having so much fun without me?" His dark chuckle made her shiver.

Jia chided him. "Did you call me to fool around or do you have any news? How is Anhe?"

"There was internal bleeding like I had suspected. Interestingly, her CT scan showed that the bone at her temple was caved in which tells me that she didn’t hurt herself by accident. The extent and depth of the head injury doesn’t say so. There was force behind that hit which is why it led to that impact."

"So somebody smashed her head against the wall?"

"Pretty much."

She narrowed her eyes. "Then it matches with our hypothesis."

"Hypothesis?"

She gave him a quick update of Anhe’s phone found hidden in a lamp.

"That’s not fair. You are leaving me out in exhilarating this cat and mouse game. I am your partner."

"And you are carrying out your relevant responsibilities so stay put in the hospital. Also, the next time you call any investigation a game or entertainment, I will dump you in a pool of sharks. Keep me updated about Anhe’s condition."

She cut the call before he could protest further. Looking at the gang, she said, "Time to find out who hates Anhe so much."

Anhe’s broken phone lay on the table with the group staring at it with a myriad of different expressions.

"It was found very neatly hidden in a lamp mounted on the wall near where Anhe had collapsed. I thought that an injured Anhe wouldn’t even think of pulling this stunt. In that case, who did?"

With her hands at the back, Jia focused her hawk gaze on Aang, Yibo and Jinping. "One of you is lying. One of you met Anhe, hit her head, hid her phone and exited the maze as if nothing happened."

"H-Hit her head!?" Daxia was thrown off course by this allegation. "No way!"

"Yes way. The word from the hospital is that the head trauma she sustained isn’t from any direct accidental collision. It wouldn’t have caved her temple bone and caused internal bleeding so badly. There was force behind that hit which means there is a culprit."

She eyed them one by one, wanting to catch their expressions and any minute changes in it.

"What the hell!" Yibo lashed out.

This wasn’t a turn he had expected the case to take. "One of us hit her head and broke her phone? Does that doctor even know what he is doing? Calling a simple accident a crime? He sounds drunk!"

Bojing couldn’t even imagine the consequences had Mingshen been here and listened to a college kid judging his medical examination. Even so, he still felt his responsibility to defend him.

"B-Boss..." he was half hiding behind Jia as he met Yibo’s furious gaze, "is not wrong. H-He is the best doctor even if he is a l-little crazy. Please don’t q-question his medical judgments."

"Shut up you pretty face! Nobody even asked your opinion! I don’t even want to talk to a disgusting trans like you," he threw him a distasteful glare.

"T-T-trans...? I am not a tr-transgender," Bojing looked dumbfounded.

"Yeah say that to your girly face attached to your girly body but having a penis in between," he scoffed. "That’s what we call people like you-"

"Enough!"

Jia’s outraged voice roared so lethally that Yibo felt his heart freeze.

Bojing fully holed up behind Jia, his face turning pale and white. Lihua jumped from her place to punch his face had not Xinyue had pulled her back. "Calm down."

"How dare he insult my cute brother!"

"Yeah he was horrible!" Ruiling gnashed her jaw.

The twins felt the disturbance and seeing Bojing cry, tears pooled in their eyes too. "Bojin..." they wailed loudly.

Wei’s gaze darkened. First, Yibo made his wife angry and now his children were crying. He took out his phone to call some guards and give an ’appropriate punishment’ to the brat but Jia said, "You won’t call anybody, Wei."

He frowned, pursing his lips in dissatisfaction. Li comforted him. "You know Jia can handle him, right?"

"I don’t like anybody hurting my wife and children," Iciness etched into his voice.

"Bojing is primarily hurt here."

"The cascade effect is my wife and twins," he plainly said, comforting his daughter in his arms.

"..."

Jia felt Bojing’s trembling body and hearing his sniffles, she felt even more incensed. "Mind your language kid or there will be consequences."

Yibo sneered. "What will you do? Put me in jail for just saying my opinion? When did that become a crime?"

She smiled unforgivingly. "We can pursue a civil litigation against you for not only publicly humiliating Bojing but also insulting the transgenders community as a whole. Don’t make me seek damages from you or you won’t have tears remaining to cry."

Jia challenged Yibo’s resentful eyes but at the same time, she felt a boring gaze at her from one side. She glanced in that direction and noticed Yong’s fixated, squinted focus on her as if trying to find something in Jia.

Why is she looking at me that way?
