Chapter 70: Walking amongst the dead (3)
A cold breeze whispered through the invisible openings, carrying with it a faint, eerie melody that sent shivers down their spines. The spooky mannequins with glowing red eyes and broken teeth added to the haunting chilliness.
The group hesitated to part, their faces illuminated by the dim glow of the haunted house’s marquee. Nervous and hushed whispers passed among them.
"Do we really need to separate?" The girl clinging to Shilin anxiously asked.
"Seems so, Anhe. We cannot go as a single group together."
"Then I will go with you!" She grinned. "We will be in the same group."
"Wait, no."
She glared at her guy friend at the back. "What’s the problem, Aang?"
"You, Yibo, Jinping and I will be in one group."
Her expression twisted. "And why is that?"
"You lost the bet with us, remember? Back at the Big Wheeler ride," he teased and chuckled. "So you will do as we say. We will be in one group and Shilin, Daxia and Yong will be in another group."
Anhe’s mouth widened. "Get lost! I lost the bet, so what? I will do what you say some other time, not now!" She darted a restless look towards Shilin.
Yibo shrugged. "If that’s what you want. But a leader who backs off from a simple bet cannot be our leader anymore. How will it look to others that Geng Anhe ran away from her bet’s punishment~"
"You...!"
From their side, Jia raised an amused brow as she observed the group. She could tell that Anhe was naturally dissatisfied because she would be losing a precious chance to be together with Shilin in such a perfect setting. The other girl, Daxia, who wore torn jeans and a pink top, silently fidgeted with her fingers.
And naturally she looks excited to be alone with Shilin, she thought. She is hiding it very well.
The remaining girl, Yong, seemed bored and uninterested in this discussion.
Eventually, Anhe had to give up and grudgingly, she left Shilin’s side to enter the first tunnel with the guys. The second group chose the second tunnel while Jia, Mingshen and Bojing faced the third tunnel. Bojing tremblingly clutched onto Mingshen’s hand.
Jia stepped inside and said, "Let’s greet some ghosts out there."
—
The third tunnel gave off a musky, chemical scent as they walked on the slightly moist tiles. But the moistness was just an illusion to make them tread slowly. Spider webs hung from the walls and a screeching cricketing noise echoed from somewhere far away. The sound of their footsteps bounced off louder with every step they took. A turn to the left brought forth a fresh horror in front of them.
It was a macabre laboratory where jars held grotesque specimens and the room was bathed in an eerie green and purplish glow emanating from bubbling test tubes and ominous beakers. The crimson coated walls leaked thin streams of blood that descended slowly and steadily.
Axes and hammers rested on the floor, red fluid filling up the crevices in between the tiles. In the middle of the lab was a stretcher where a mannequin of a thin and frail dead man lay cut open in his belly. Beside him was placed a tray containing syringes, needles, scalpels, knives and drills.
Mingshen placed his trembling hands on the window that separated the lab and the corridor, his heart gushing with ecstasy. "A-Am I in heaven...?"
Jia rolled her eyes.
Only a crazy person like him would find joy to see such a freakish lab and that ghastly patient.
For the first time since coming in, Bojing felt at ease. Perhaps it was the similarity of the lab and the chilled atmosphere that matched with the air of working in Mingshen’s lab that his drumming heartbeats calmed down.
"Boss, th-this is so realistic and awesome..."
He curiously stuck his forehead against the window, trying to get a clear view inside.
Jia - "..."
And he is suddenly not afraid anymore? Her lips parted in bewilderment.
The dazzle in Mingshen’s eyes kept notching up brighter and brighter, and he avidly banged the window sill. "Hey, hey where is the entrance? I want to go inside! Manager! Horror house manager! Let me inside! Finally some fascinating place in this stupid amusement park."
Jia’s gaze darkened.
Mingshen’s infectious excitement spreaded to Bojing too, who was twitching expectantly to go inside the lab.
"Aaaahhhhh!!"
She raised her head slightly, hearing a distant scream.
Is that Anhe’s scream?
Similar shrieks came from the second tunnel too.
"Aaaahhh! Aaahhh! Help!"
Seems like the rest of the tunnels are just as horrific, she shrugged.
Jia grabbed Mingshen and Bojing’s collars and pulled them back, glaring at them.
"What are you shouting? You look like a kid shining your eyes at his favorite toy."
"But I want to play here!"
"Shut up. Let’s head forward."
Suddenly, a creepy laughter of a harmony creaked from within the lab and the dead patient got up as if his body was undergoing seizures. With a twisted grin, he jerked his neck towards the visitors, the chilling sound of his bone cracking and filling up the air with terror.
The bloodied patient with his cut belly jumped out of the bed and twitched his feet as if ready to pounce on his next victims. He ran manically and banged his body hard against the window, his deformed face giving a closeup zoom.
This performance though, didn’t incite the intended reactions.
Jia’s facial muscles didn’t even twitch in fear once during this ghostly attack whereas Mingshen and his assistant welcomed the dead patient with absolute thrill. "Nice to meet you~ Can I please touch you?" He breathlessly asked.
Jia grimaced.
That longing gaze and breathlessness would make others mistake him as if he is a man in love...
"Aaahhh! Leave...alone..! Help!!!"
Jia heard Anhe’s voice once again. More wails and howls filled the air, adding to the tension.
She forcefully pulled Mingshen and Bojing out of their trances and headed towards a door at the far end of the corridor. The door ominously creaked open as if welcoming the guests to a place of no return.
Bojing’s fright returned after being separated from the familiar lab, and he hiccuped with tears wetting his eyes.
Jia looked around to observe a room which looked suffocatingly small, its walls seemingly closing in on all sides. The wallpaper, peeling and discolored, depicted distorted scenes of suffering souls in torment. Their cries howled in the air. Dim, flickering candles mounted on rusty sconces casted eerie shadows.
At the left side of the room was an imposing, ornate mirror. In it, Jia saw distorted reflections of themselves, their faces twisted into expressions of fear and confusion. The mirror seemed to mock their decided fate. The room’s only exit, the menacing door through which they had entered, slammed shut with a resounding thud.
Bojing sobbed. "Th-the door has shut!"
Mingshen yawned. "Are these ghosts going to jump at us again?"
Bojing tremblingly kept taking slow steps. At one point, his foot suddenly tripped onto something on the floor, making him crash against the room’s rusty wall. Immediately, a faint click sound echoed and a portion of that wall collapsed at a slant angle. Losing his balance, Bojing fell inside sliding down into darkness, and the opened up wall closed itself shut after consuming him to nobody knew where.
Jia and Mingshen - "..."
