Chapter 69: Walking amongst the dead (2)

Jia, accompanied by Mingshen and Bojing, followed the college group, albeit keeping some distance between them. Stepping farther inside the haunted house, they were immediately enveloped by inky darkness. The air grew thick with an earthy, musty scent, as if they had entered a long-forgotten cemetery. Their footsteps echoed on cold, stone floors.

Bojing gulped, hearing the faint drip of water in the distance which only added to his unease.

I-Is that water o-or blood...?

As they walked along the dimly lit corridors, the walls adorned with eerie portraits seemed to watch their every move.

"Eek!! Th-the eyes! Her e-eyes moved!"

In the group ahead, Jia watched a girl wearing a bikini sort of jeans skirt and a white shirt, shrieking with horror. Her high-pitched voice laced with fear created an unsettling echo in the chamber. One of the guys was shrugging her off and only laughing at her cowardice. The guy, Yibo, who had hit on her was wiping his sweat-laced temples with his handkerchief.

"A painting with its eyes moving is the first thing to expect in a horror house hah!"

Suddenly, the dark corridor flickered with the yellow candle lights, revealing skeletal hands creeping out from the shadows.

Bojing hid behind Mingshen, hanging tight to his waist.

Mingshen choked with the amount of the force that seemed to crush his inside organs. "Stupid assistant...! I will kill you if you don’t release me!"

"Th-the skeletons will kill me first!" He cried.

"B-Boss let’s run away!"

"Shut up!"

Getting caught in Bojing’s grasp wasn’t a joke, and Jia enjoyed every second of his misery. She even clicked a few pictures. Eventually, he let go of him but closely followed his side.

Jia and Mingshen were hardly bothered by the skeletal hands trying to scare them. On the contrary, Mingshen actually stopped in the way and curiously studied the fake skeletal hands. "Oh my, what am I looking at here?"

He held the skeletal wrist and moved it towards the candles to study it. "It’s made up of plastic. Quite common. Is it because bones made of plastic are lightweight?"

He called out in a loud voice. "Hey the horror house manager. Do you hear me? My lab has some top quality resin based skeletons! Naturally since it’s me, the great Yang Mingshen, the skeleton is molded with precise detail to resemble real bones~ I have PVC ones too! They can mimic human movements to its finest. How about I offer you some high quality skeletons? I will be very generous with the cost~ I am sure it will bring more vigor to this horror house~"

Jia grimaced. "They are using it for entertainment, not medical purposes. Save your capitalist deal."

The screams of the girls in the group ahead practically filled the horror house. Bojing courageously stepped at Jia’s side and curiously asked, "S-sis why did you say that a war might break out in that g-group?"

Suddenly, a blood-curdling scream pierced the air followed by a nasty and ghostly laughter.

Mingshen shut his ears with all the screaming and yelling and yawned. "Why is everybody screaming? You all will tear out my ear drums."

The girl walking beside Shilin turned and glared at him. She spoke breathlessly, "It’s terrifying so obviously we will scream!"

Mingshen snorted. "It’s not terrifying when it’s loud but when it’s absolutely silent."

Jia patted Bojing’s head who seemed to have lost half his life after that ghastly scream. She diverted his attention to the group. "It doesn’t seem to me that they share a very heartfelt friendship."

From inside a wall, a ghoulish, grinning and bloodied joker suddenly lunged at Jia to pull her shoulder. But she simply ducked without a sweat, and the joker could only grab onto empty space.

"That blood looks realistic~" Mingshen praised the joker.

Bojing admired Jia with a sparkling gaze. "You are awesome sis! That duck was so cool!"

She shrugged and went back to the topic. "The girl holding Shilin definitely has a crush on him."

Bojing nodded. "I c-can see that too."

"But that girl wearing jeans shorts and white shirt also seems to like him. I casually glanced at her and she was uncomfortable with the other girl’s closeness to Shilin."

"A l-love triangle..." he hushed a gasp.

Mingshen also leaned his ear to listen in. From the roof, a grotesque doll having only one eye jumped down in front of his face that was supposed to scare the living shit out of him.

He dryly pushed the doll away as if it was a mosquito. "You have to do better than that to scare a doctor who lives and breathes in the company of dead bodies."

Jia then said, "Then the other girl. The one wearing torn jeans and pink top," she pointed at the third girl of their group, "she looked very pleased and satisfied when Mingshen humiliated that guy who told him to buzz off.

She didn’t explicitly show it, but her expression looked definitely happy. Looks like she had her fair share of collisions with him or the guys group in general. Also, don’t you feel she is kind of being purposely left out of the group?"

Bojing blinked and observing their interaction, he indeed felt that the girl with the bandaid walking at the very corner was being ignored.

"The girl walking with Shilin keeps giving her mocking look now and then and the others seem to follow her. It’s almost like she is not a part of their group at all so I wonder why she is here in the first place? Maybe that other girl forced her to come just to bully her."

"Brats wasting their time to establish their superiority. Tsk, tsk," Mingshen said with disdain.

Jia gave him a dry look. "Don’t you judge them. You like doing that too. No, you live to establish your greatness and superiority all the time."

"Superiority backed by concrete skills and knowledge, my dear. Their backing to act all high and mighty on the other hand is porous with low self-esteem and low confidence. Acting superior by suppressing others only exposes your shallowness on full display~"

He is a psycho but he makes fair points at times, she thought.

Bojing asked, "What about the guys?"

"The one who made a pass at me seems like a spoiled brat who isn’t taught to respect women. The other two are okay, I guess? Shilin though...I cannot place him anywhere. He is smiling and going along with the girl clinging to him, but he doesn’t look interested in her. He seems to gel with the other guys, but he also looks aloof in a way of not joining in the bullying."

She raised her shoulders in a shrug. "Feels to me like that group could crumble any time."

Walking in the myriad of endless corridors, everybody stopped at a point where the path diverged into three tunnel-like ways. An instruction plate on the top with jagged blood-red letters told them that no more than four could enter at a time.

Mingshen rubbed his chin with interest. "Which path should we choose~?"
