Chapter 370: Abyss (1)
Minmin urgently pulled her back and said, "Fenhua, don’t be ridiculous! You are going too far."
She shook her arm off and continued to face Jia with disdain and loathe.
"How am I going far? Wasn’t that always the case before too? Even in high school, Jia always acted as the weak and pitiful girl with a sad orphan story behind her. She pretended to be a loner just to garner more attention. Heh, but it backfired on her because nobody gave a fuck. And who will, to a daughter of traitors?"
Jia stiffened, a wave of discomfort and nausea making her feel sick.
"You...better stop with the nonsense. I never acted pitiful."
She sneered. "You don’t have to act innocent now, Jia. Everybody knew and that’s why everybody stayed away from you. Your cop parents betrayed their duty and were killed because of that! And you were nothing but a daughter of traitors. Who would have befriended you?"
"Enough!" Jia exclaimed breathlessly, the nausea growing stronger and stronger.
Fenhua chuckled. "What’s wrong? Your parents brought nothing but shame and embarrassment to their country. They only acted as the ideal parents for you but deep down? Deep down they were only a bunch of corrupt and greedy pricks who sold their pride! And you just proved you are one of them. You were now acting all high and mighty all because of who? Dr. Yang, right?
All this time at the party tonight, you were just looking down on us. You must be thinking what kind of poor people you have to deal with tonight when you are none other than Yang Mingshen’s girlfriend. You bathe in money and luxury so our achievements would have looked so miserable to you. But how can we compare to Song Jia who slept her way to the top?"
Minmin anxiously tried to stop her once again but to no avail.
"Let me go, Minmin! Don’t you interfere! I don’t understand why you even invited such a woman to the party? What was the point? We never talked with her in school and nobody wanted to be friends with a traitor anyway! I am more surprised to see that she even dared to keep living in the same city despite her parents’ history. If it was me, I couldn’t have ever had the courage to show my face again."
Fenhua laughed. "And just look at the irony now. Jia became a cop. Wow, that’s some shitstorm going there. What, you decided to be a cop to prove us wrong? Or prove how innocent your parents were? Or...was it the guilt that made you take their place?
’Since my parents brought such shame to the cops, I will compensate for it.’ Is that what you are thinking? But it’s useless, Jia. No matter what you do, they have already gone down as traitors in history. You will never be able to clean the black stains they have left behind. But truly I wonder if you are a traitor in making too? Just like how they betrayed us, you would go down the same path as them!"
Hanjun urgently grabbed her arm and whispered.
"Don’t be an idiot, Fenhua! What are you doing? Yang Mingshen is her boyfriend. Do you want to die!?"
She glared and pushed him away. "You might be a coward but I am not! What is wrong in pointing out her hypocrisy! She is trying to run it in our faces about how miserable we are while she is swimming in money. Why does a daughter of pathetic traitor parents deserve a boyfriend like Yang Mingshen?"
Jia’s breathing turned more and more erratic. Tears blurred her vision and she stumbled back. Her hands covered her ears, trying to block off the poisonous words from reaching her but they kept echoing back and forth like an unrelenting tide.
"Jia...hear me? Are you...okay?"
She faintly heard Minmin’s voice but couldn’t make out her words as the past and the hidden grief all came crashing down on her like a big tsunami wave.
’Traitor parents!’
’They brought such shame and embarrassment!’
’Are you a traitor in making too?’
’A daughter of pathetic traitor parents!’
Jia gasped breathlessly as if an invisible rope was tightening around her neck like a death sentence. She looked at Fenhua, disdain and sneer filled her eyes towards her. She looked at everybody where pity shone in some eyes and disgust in the others. Disgust because of her parents’ past and betrayal. Distrust because of her parents’ deeds that shamed her family.
Unable to bear the gazes and voices, Jia turned on her heels and ran away from the room. She faintly caught Minmin’s voice calling her out and chasing after her, but she ignored her. She ignored everything that came in her way and simply continued to run with all her might. She ran as fast as she could to escape the only faces that hammered in her mind in all directions.
Song Wuying and Song Lan.

In the dark and silent solace of her bedroom, Jia sat on the floor leaning against the bed with a dead gaze staring at the empty space ahead. Her eyes were tired of the tears it shed, yet they continued to rain down her cheeks like an endless sprint.
Her phone then buzzed with a notification which made her blankly stare at her phone. A pop up notification read about the live stream of Mingshen’s award ceremony starting in a minute. She took her phone and opened the streaming platform, staring at the dark countdown screen. The grand venue lit up as soon as the countdown hit zero and applause echoed everywhere.
Jia saw a white British man step up on the stage, greeting and welcoming the audience with a smile. She vacantly looked around until she stopped, focusing her gaze at a particular frame in the video.
Mingshen was lazily seated in the front row with his head lowered, seemingly scrolling on his mobile screen, apparently bored with the ceremony before it had even begun.
Jia stared at his figure, tears brimming in her eyes. Suddenly, a single wave of emotion hit her heart at once.
At this moment, she missed Mingshen terribly. She could see his goofy face in the video but how her heart wished if that goofy face was here in front of her...
Mingshen...
