Tears plopped on her mobile screen, watching Mingshen in the award conference. Everything that he ever guessed and said about her depression came knocking in her mind. Everything that he ever warned about tightly shutting down her sorrows now was violently opening like a pandora’s box.

She thought she was slowly learning to move away from the painful past but reality harshly struck that she hadn’t moved a single step forward after all. She was there where she always was.

A little girl who saw her parents die in front of her eyes.

A little girl who had to accept the poison of her parents’ betrayal.

A little girl who knew she would have to carry this burden for the rest of her life.

The phone fell from her hands, tears gushing out of her tired, reddened eyes. Her agonizing sobs brought a gloom in the atmosphere that reflected the darkness she was slipping into. She cried and cried for a long time with no relief, with the poisonous words banging and bellowing in her mind like a storm would rip her apart.

Jia clutched her neck, her chest heaving in breathlessness. She coughed and choked as if an invisible noose squeezed around her neck. The empty room felt harrowingly horrifying and voices in her head made her gasp with dizziness.

Tears poured as she hugged herself and whispered, "Please stop this...I beg you, please stop..."

London.

"May I now invite Dr. Yang Mingshen on the stage for his excellent research and contribution in the field of tissue healing and recovery?"

A round of applause resounded as Mingshen made his way to the podium. He took the center stage and adjusted the mic.

"Thank God my turn arrived or I was this close to falling into a wonderful nap."

Everybody - "..."

Though medical professionals in the community were aware of Mingshen’s attitude and eccentricities, they still struggled to cope with it no matter when they came across him.

"And I would have killed you if you had called me during my wonderful nap because I won’t allow anybody to disturb my sexy dream with Spicy."

"..."

The audience couldn’t help but gasp at the possible notion of him having a girlfriend. The host, though also very curious like the audience, held it in with great patience and effort.

He coughed. "Dr. Yang, if you could please proceed with your speech."

"Do I have to?"

"..."

"My paper is all published and everybody has read it I bet so thank you for the award."

Oh wait, isn’t Spicy watching me too? He beamed. Mhmm, I cannot show her such a lame side. I have to explain all the awesome work I did and impress her!

He smiled at the host. "Aren’t you a lucky fella?"

The host was left thoroughly confused.

Mingshen then cleared his throat and waved at the camera with all cheeriness.

"Spicy, Spicy! I am finally hereeee! You are watching me, right? Right? How am I looking? Handsome? Dashing? Gorgeous? And see, this is my award!" He waved the trophy in his hand.

Everybody choked. They could only watch him in a stunned stupor to see him using a public platform to communicate with his girlfriend on the other side of the world.

He cleared his throat again. "I will give my speech now."

Finally! The host grimaced.

"Thank you for this award. My work in tissue healing process has-"

His phone vibrated in his trouser pocket, making his brows crinkle.

"Excuse me."

He stopped his speech and took out his ringing phone from his pocket while the others were jaw-dropped.

He is picking up his phone in the middle of his speech?

Mingshen’s eyes narrowed. "A doctor should always be reachable. Medical emergencies don’t take your permission before striking."

It was Mingshen’s habit which he learned from his father. A doctor’s life only revolved around emergencies which didn’t look at the time if it was morning or the dead middle of the night. So he always prioritized picking his calls no matter where he was or what he was doing.

The crowd froze with a look of embarrassment that flashed in everybody’s expressions. As fellow doctors, they couldn’t agree more.

Mingshen looked back at his phone and blinked at the incoming number several times.

Spicy...?

He gasped.

Is she not able to see the live stream properly?

Without any further hesitation, he placed his phone on his ear.

"Spicy!" His expression shone.

The audience choked once again.

So it was his girlfriend calling him!?

"Spicy, did you call me to personally wish me when I would be on the stage?" He blushed, which only brought horror in everybody’s expressions yet again.

Dr. Yang blushes too?

When he didn’t hear a response from her side, Mingshen furrowed his brows. "Spicy?"

He then froze, hearing some muffled sobs from the other end. "Spicy?"

He turned the microphone to the other side to allow a private conversation.

"Jia. What’s wrong?"

"...I...I...am tired...I don’t know what to do..."

He heard her breaking down on the other side, crying her heart out.

"Why did this h-happen to me, Mingshen...? W-What did I do so wrong in my life? I..I keep trying and trying to move forward but I always.. always get pulled back into the same past..I don’t know what.. what to do anymore..I took your pills but they d-don’t work anymore. It feels so dark like I c-cannot see anything. I..." she breathed heavily,

"I k-keep seeing them, Mingshen..I keep seeing M-Mom and Dad and then..then I end up remembering everything they did and then..I r-realize how useless I am. I...am a daughter of t-traitors. Nobody will ever l-like me and trust me, Mingshen. I am not a good cop or a...a...human being be-because Mom and Dad..." her voice choked.

"S-So I don’t know what to do Mingshen. I just ate two l-large pizzas and I know you won’t like it because this is stress eating but then again, n-nobody likes me anyway and I don’t deserve to live a good life so I keep eating and eating and I don’t know much weight I will gain from all this and...and I don’t want to li-live a life like that a-and I feel t-that I should h-hurt myself but Li-Lihua won’t like it right but I d-don’t know how to stop..."

She broke down, her excruciating cries echoing in his ears.

"Jia," Mingshen whispered with a dead-serious countenance. "Stay where you are. I am coming ."
