Chapter 314: Pearls of wisdom

Chapter 314: Pearls of wisdom

Mingshen placed the big pot of green curry chicken at the center of the dining table. Its delicious fragrance made Bobo drool, but he quickly wiped it off before the devil would notice it.

Mrs. Zhang served Bobo first and then helped herself with a hearty portion. Her face lit up with joy. "Such a pleasant evening to be served without even lifting a finger."

Mingshen lazily sat opposite them, leaning back against the chair.

"You are not eating?"

"I already ate outside."

"Liar," she snorted. "Nothing can escape my eyes. Be a good boy and serve yourself some too."

"I am not at the age to be called a good boy," he grimaced.

"You are not at the age to make silly mistakes either but here you are anyway."

He sneered. "I now sincerely feel like pouring some poison into your plate."

"That sharp tongue will never help you bridge the gap with Jia," she sneered back.

His eyes narrowed and he scoffed.

Mrs. Zhang shook her head. "Seriously, tell me. Why did you go to the Zhuo mansion with Jia if you cannot tolerate that family?"

"No reason," he hummed.

"That answer is not going to help you, young man."

He made a face.

"What is exactly the animosity between you and the Zhuo family anyway?" She couldn’t help but get curious.

He stretched his arms lazily. "Too old of a story now."

Her eyes squinted. "If it still seethes you with anger, then it isn’t really that old of a story. Or maybe the repercussions are hard to get free of."

He gave her a side glance. "You talk too much. I think it is a natural progression with women of your age."

"That attitude isn’t going to help with Jia."

He shrugged.

Bobo made a face. "Why did the evil doctor even come here to live then if you just want to fight with Jia?"

"Sis Jia, brat."

He sneered. "Jia doesn’t mind if I call her Jia so why do you?"

"It’s an excellent question," Mrs. Zhang said, "Not this one. The earlier one."

She took a bite of the chicken, relishing the delicacy made by Mingshen and asked, "What do you want to achieve by living as Jia’s neighbor?"

Mingshen didn’t respond for a very long time.

She rolled her eyes. "You should accept the wisdom of elderly people when you are in a pinch. You are too proud for your own good. You have to accept the fact that you cannot figure out everything by yourself. Relationships are a different ballgame than your science and medicine."

He tilted his head, his gaze staring at particularly nothing.

"I want to earn Spicy’s trust."

That immediately earned a hard cough from Mrs. Zhang. She hastily gulped some water and furiously patted her chest.

"You almost made me choke on my chicken. Give me a little heads-up next time, okay?"

"What is there to give you warning for?"

"That the great Yang Mingshen, who used to only care about himself now cares enough to earn someone else’s trust?"

He shrugged.

She sighed. "And it already got to such a rough start. Forget earning trust, you made her mad."

His gaze flickered with a faint irritation. He kept glancing at her frequently and eventually asked, "...What should I do?"

"You really want your equation to go back to how it was earlier?"

Mingshen thought back to their confrontation. He liked getting into debates and heated conversations with Jia. He liked flipping her switches for all the wrong reasons. But not this time. This wasn’t the type of fight he wanted to get into with her.

"I don’t mind if she curses the hell out of me."

Bobo whispered. "Maso..."

"Quietly eat your food before I poison it brat."

"..."

Mingshen looked at Mrs. Zhang. "But I mind if she feels disappointed in me. That’s not the expression I want to see in her eyes for me."

A smile bloomed on Mrs. Zhang’s lips. "That was adorably honest of you."

"So what should I do?"

"Say sorry."

Mingshen’s expression immediately dropped.

"Listen to me fully! You young generation is always so hasty in jumping to conclusions," she snorted with disdain.

She took another bite and continued. "See, I don’t deny the history between you and Zhuo Syaoran, whatever that is. I don’t think Jia denies it either. She is just pissed off because she feels it was silly for you to accompany her when even breathing the same air as him was apparently impossible for you."

He said nothing.

"You have to understand that Jia doesn’t know what happened between you two. So, if you suddenly humiliate a physically-disabled man, then yes, she will get mad. Any normal person would and she is a cop at that. She feels a greater sense of responsibility towards all the citizens, especially for the more fragile sections of the society like children, elderly and the diffidently-abled people."

Mrs. Zhang gently wiped Bobo’s face with a napkin.

"I know it is the same for you too as a doctor. Your and Jia’s duties towards certain groups of people are very similar. You are more sensitive towards team. But if she doesn’t know the past, then she wouldn’t get the context of your harshness.

So you don’t have to apologize for your history. But you should apologize for going there in the first place and then taking the frustration out on the man when you could have simply avoided it. You unnecessarily made things difficult and awkward for her."

She sighed. "Then on top of everything, you accused Jia of pitying him, which wasn’t the case at all. Cops are trained to serve with respect, not pity."

Mingshen slightly curled his fingers into his fist.

Suddenly, a thought crossed her mind. "Wait a minute...is it possible that you went with her because you felt jealous of Zhuo Syaoran?"

Mingshen let out a big scoff in disbelief. "Are you high?"

"That is not my answer."

"That is exactly your answer. Why the hell would I feel jealous of him?"

She smiled. "Women get attracted to more charming and sensible men."

His eyes gleamed with a dangerous light. "You want to insinuate that I am not charming and sensible?"

"At least not yet in Jia’s dictionary."

"..."

She smiled. "Why did you think that earning somebody’s trust is easy? You cannot trust a person who doesn’t contemplate on his mistakes and apologize. Saying sorry doesn’t lower your dignity."
