Chapter 186: Watchful eyes
Chapter 186: Watchful eyes
The flight touched down at Beijing in the evening and a crowd soon erupted at the entrance along with a group of media reporters to barrage the crew with their back to back questions. However, the crew denied to give any comments and headed straight towards their booked cabs.
"So lover boy, ready to meet your new fate?" Mingshen put his hand on his shoulder and squeezed it a little tightly.
Dong Haoyu didn’t show any expression and simply remained quiet as if he was ready to face whatever awaited him.
Chow Mey fiercely stood in between. "What-what are you going to do with him? Are you going to keep him like a prisoner? Will you k-ki..."
She didn’t have the heart to utter the word ’kill.’
"Ah so very heart touching. If I had to kill him, I wouldn’t have let him have the joyful ride back with you here. He would have been buried back in Tianjin only," he gave a bored smile.
She bit her lip hard, uncertain of his plans.
"Does that mean I will never get to meet him again?"
"Meymey, calm down," Dong Haoyu anxiously held her shoulder, but she shook him off.
"Yes, yes, see how your lover boy is so patient. You should learn-"
Mingshen suddenly turned his head without any warning and narrowed his eyes. He stared at the crowd acutely, observing the passers by heading in and out of the terminal.
Why do I feel that somebody’s watching me?
He felt an intense gaze from a direction but didn’t sense any chills or hostility from it, nor did he find the source of it.
Strange, he thought.
He cautiously turned back and decided not to entertain Chow Mey any further. "Let’s go."
Meng Rin was also ready to take the cab back home, but she kept throwing glances at Zeng Shan’s direction. She declared to find out the real culprit who manipulated Xin Manchu, which Meng Rin all too knew could never end well for her.
"Sh-Shan!"
She hurried to her side and breathlessly said, "You..."
"Miss. Meng. What’s wrong?"
"Are you..." she rubbed her palms together, "really serious about that man w-who presumably told Manchu to kill Director Wan?"
Zeng Shan widened her eyes. "Of course! Manchu told me himself and he wouldn’t lie about it!" Her orbs began to tear up again, "It’s not fair that he is in jail when the real mastermind is living scot free!"
Meng Rin’s heart thudded uneasily. "Sh-Shan, I suggest that you...you don’t pursue this matter. Manchu was drunk, right? He might have babbled something-"
"How could you say that, Miss. Meng? Manchu was serious about it and why would he lie about a backing that can be easily exposed?"
"It’s just..." she was frustrated at herself as she didn’t know how to warn her without making it suspicious. "It just feels very dangerous. You know how our industry is. I am just concerned for your safety..."
Zeng Shan sneered. "Concerned for my safety or for Mr. Bai Caishen’s future? Hmph, I know how you always admired and adored Mr. Bai more than Manchu. Manchu was even going to land a big role had he not been arrested. You must feel happy that a thorn from Mr. Bai’s side got disposed of, right?"
"That’s not how I feel, Shan! I am genuinely worried-"
"Keep your concern to yourself!" She exclaimed. "You never liked him to begin with so now it’s easy to speak up against him. But I know that he has been unjustly held back in jail. I wanted to stay back at Tianjin for him, but I came back here only so I could investigate the matter."
Meng Rin stiffened.
Investigate the matter...
If Hou Tengqi hears this then...
"Shan, please listen to me-"
But Zeng Shan refused to hear her out anymore and already stepped in the cab. She banged the door to express her animosity and bitterly said to the driver. "Go."
Meng Rin clutched her chest, sweat trickling down her forehead.
You...You have no idea how dangerous he is!
She felt a poke at her shoulder and she turned dazedly.
"O-oh, Mr. Lu Bojing."
Bojing flailed his hands in confusion. "You di-didn’t look like you were feeling well s-so I came to check on you..."
Shilin accompanied Bojing in silence.
"Is your stomach h-hurting again?"
Meng Rin replied. "Ah, no, no. I am fine!" She grinned to prove her point.
"R-Really?" Bojing looked doubtful. "You looked p-pale there for a second..."
"It must be fatigue. I couldn’t get proper sleep during the flight as well," she sheepishly scratched her chin.
From afar, Bai Caishen was observing her conversion with Bojing.
Bojing said, "I-I see. That’s a relief then. You have the prescription, right?"
"Yes, I do."
He nodded. "Don’t f-forget to take your medicine on time a-and...oh yes!"
He took out his cellphone and urged her to do the same. Then he synced a contact number from his contact list into hers.
She blinked twice. "Whose number is this?"
Bojing merrily chirped. "This is our sleep specialist’s n-number who works in the Boss’s lab w-with me. I think t-that your sleep cycle should return to n-normal in a few days but if it doesn’t, then please f-feel free to reach out to him!"
"Oh, that’s so very thoughtful of you. Thanks a lot," she smiled sincerely.
"N-No problem!"
He looked back at Shilin and urgently said, "We should q-quickly head back t-too. You need good rest!"
"Yes, Senior Lu," he pleasantly smiled.
Jia, too, called for the cab but a strange sensation crept behind her as if somebody was watching her. She eyed her surroundings but didn’t find anything unusual.
Am I too tired?
She carefully stepped in the cab while still being cautious of the people around her. She didn’t want to linger around for more time lest Mingshen would hop in to bother her.
As the car took speed and left, a young man’s head slightly ducked out of an alley near the terminal, his black irises carrying an unreadable expression behind them..
