The Devil Doctor's Spicy Love -
Chapter 185: Happy mask
Chapter 185: Happy mask
The Yang family is known to be choosy with their patients after all.
Jia remembered Hou Tengqi’s statement.
"Why did Uncle Cheng refuse though?"
Mingshen shrugged. "He didn’t tell me the reason nor did I ask. But what he did mention was that the Hou family refused to listen to him about whatever he was advising them. Which showed how arrogant they acted. Dad hates it and so do I."
"You really don’t know what transpired?"
"Dad is a very private person. If he wants to share something, he will do it. If he doesn’t want to, then nothing in this damn world can force him. But I guessed that whatever happened there made Dad extremely furious. I saw it in his expression when he had returned. He hardly gets angry so it was a surprise to see that side of him."
Jia recalled her own impression of Yang Cheng and seemed to agree with Mingshen.
Yang Cheng was indeed a quiet and reserved man.
She then asked, "But did nothing happen after that? I thought they would make Uncle’s life difficult after his refusal."
Mingshen laughed in amusement. "Aish, at times like these, I adore your naivety, Spicy."
She scowled.
"If they are influential, so are we. We are not your average doctors whose careers you can crush with your fists whenever you feel like it. The Underworld doesn’t step into politics and many people would prefer it remain that way," he smiled mischievously. "So political families cannot afford to poke us that much. Your law, their politics and my underworld stand at a very delicate balance. They won’t disrupt it~"
Jia narrowed her eyes as she contemplated something. "The cooperation contract gives you an extra edge, right?"
His eyes shone. "Smart deduction. If anybody acts against us, then the law is pretty much helpless and so there is not much use in bribing the police higher ups to cover up your deed or help settle for a lesser punishment. So somebody will think ten times before doing anything stupid."
Jia didn’t know why but an overall disconcerting feeling tugged her in her chest.
"You should get used to it. Being honest and straightforward is idealistic in today’s world~"
He bent to her side until their shoulders barely grazed against each other. "You cannot help people like the lover boy solely based on your ideals."
"There...is no question of help when you commit a crime," she slightly clenched her jaw. "Going against the law is not justified no matter what reasons you give yourself."
Mingshen raised his brow. "You know I have a strong feeling that something soon will happen that will make you go against your own preachings."
She glared. "That will never happen. I will not betray my duty."
"We will see that~ Your duty binds you with too many chains and you will realize one day that not all those chains lead you to the right way~ Now if you will excuse, I have my beauty sleep to catch up on."
He donned his eye mask and adjusted his seat for a sleeping position. "Do wake me up when we reach Beijing."
"Go make your own alarm!"
Jia looked out of the window and released a silent breath.
Duty and chains huh...

On the other side, Meng Rin thanked the air hostess for the food and tore the packet of chopsticks. She glanced at Bai Caishen and asked, "So what did we have to discuss about work?"
He frowned. "It’s sad to see you not catching up on my acting."
"Sorry?"
"It was just an excuse to prevent you from going with him. Your boyfriend."
Her smile slightly cracked. "Ah? Why...why did you have to do that haha...? He was there to pick me up."
He stared at her intently for a few long seconds. "Are you doing okay with him Rin?"
That question took her off-guard. But she quickly corrected her expression. "Of course! He is super doting and loving and also very caring. What more does a woman want from a guy?"
"But you didn’t seem so thrilled with his surprise visit," his eyes squinted.
"I-I was just taken aback that’s all..."
"It should have been a pleasant taken aback reaction not a nervous one."
She waved her hand in dismissal. "You are overthinking, Caishen. I was just fatigued with all that happened over the last few days. It has nothing to do with Hou Tengqi."
Bai Caishen kept his gaze fixed at her with an unreadable expression, making her swallow her saliva.
"You do understand that you shouldn’t feel pressured to be his girlfriend just because he is from an influential political family, right?"
It was as if he struck the heart of the matter that she felt a light shudder.
"Even..." his expression slightly soured. "Chow Mey is concerned. I think she also felt that something looked odd with you."
Meng Rin sniffled and hugged his arm. "Aish, you care about me so much, Caishen! I am lucky to have such a caring senior," her eyes teared up.
Bai Caishen narrowed his eyes dangerously knowing fully well that she was avoiding the topic.
"I am fine. Really. Hou Tengqi is a good man! I am happy with him," She chirped.
"I see..."
She unbuckled her seat belt and said, "I will be back from the washroom."
She hurriedly left after which Ke Yufei took her seat temporarily. "She is not doing fine."
Bai Caishen tilted his head. "You know all those times she asked me out to be her boyfriend, I wonder if that was..."
"Hm?"
"Just a thought to myself."
"Will we leave her like this?"
"I want to help her but not too prematurely."
"I see."
Bai Caishen then glanced at him. "Are you free tonight?"
Ke Yufei paused and looked at him suspiciously.
"I am asking with the purest of intentions."
He smiled and said as he got up to leave. "You are an actor. It’s hard to believe your pure intentions on face value."
Bai Caishen remained silent for a moment and then looked outside the window, murmuring to himself.
"When has the path to love ever been a bed of roses?"
