Chapter 175: The storm after the calm

The next day was the last day the crew and Jia were to be staying for this trip. The flight back home to Beijing would be in the early hours of the next day and everybody took this time to rest.

After more investigation, Lei Honghui found out that Xin Manchu indeed had the previous knowledge of Wan Guanting’s hypertension so him asking for the cold medicine from the hotel’s staff wasn’t a coincidence. Currently, the version the police believed was that after mixing the cold medicine, Xin Manchu climbed the balcony from Zeng Shan’s balcony to assure himself of Wan Guanting’s death.

But he might have realized that he was still breathing and alive and in a state of panic, he used the pillow to suffocate him and kill any further possibility of living.

At the same time as this was shed to light, Chow Mey was finally released from Tianjin Bureau’s custody after she came forward to tell what really happened that night. She had fainted after realizing Wan Guanting’s death and she had no clue about the identity of the killer. She didn’t have any sleeping pills in her possession nor could they find any tracks of her getting her hands on those pills.

Dong Haoyu was released too as the only reason for his confession was out of his emotions and to protect Chow Mey.

Except Xin Manchu, everybody was back in the hotel, anxiously waiting for the day to end so that they could head back to Beijing. At the same time, a storm also riled up in the media with Xin Manchu’s arrest. Messages and disbelief flooded over the social media that he would turn out to be the killer.

Jia looked at herself in the mirror and exhaled a deep breath. Thinking of the news she was about to break, her heart couldn’t help but squeeze with lament.

Taking her stick’s support, she slowly supported her weight on it and dragged her feet outside. As she opened the door, a smiling devil’s face greeted her with zest.

"It’s such a beautiful morning, isn’t it~?" Mingshen chuckled merrily as if last night’s conversation never happened.

But it wasn’t a merry morning for Jia. On the contrary, she felt she wanted to escape from this painful responsibility.

Mingshen whistled with his hands in his coat’s pockets. "It was such a bummer this morning, Spicy. Listen to my sorrowful story! I wanted to take a walk in the garden but guess who I saw? That lover boy and the actress were having their own dreamy walk. It felt so warm and fuzzy that I just couldn’t stand standing there," he sighed. "I am more used to the coldness of my beautiful lab, not this emotional, sensitive atmosphere. It gave me such creeps."

Jia’s eyes squinted.

Warm and fuzzy...

Which was a sign that their relationship was improving.

"It was as if they had hogged the entire garden for themselves!" he pouted.

Jia ignored him and walked away, but Mingshen followed her nevertheless.

"Oh, oh! Are you finally going to show your most favorite handcuffs to the lover boy? Is it time?"

She threw him a dark glare. "Stop your commentary!"

"You are not talking to me so somebody has to, right?" Mingshen said, ’heartbroken.’ "I was praising you anyway. Such a responsible and dutiful cop you are~ Technically, people like you are the nemesis for underworld people like me."

They rode down the lift and reached the lobby with Mingshen babbling and chewing her ears off. At one point, Jia was very close to making him one with the lift itself.

"B-Boss! Sis Jia!"

As soon as they stepped out, they saw Bojing hurriedly rushing to their side. His face was marred with stress and concern.

Jia finally found a breath of fresh air with a presence other than Mingshen’s. She asked, "What’s wrong? You look tense."

"I c-cannot see Shilin anywhere. He-He is not picking up his phone either..."

Mingshen yawned. "He is not a baby. Might be hooking up with some girl. I see him as a healthy adult."

Bojing’s face turned crimson while Jia grimaced.

"I-I don’t think so. I d-didn’t see Shilin with any girl," Bojing tilted his head in confusion.

"Your cotton brain only sees innocent things, my dear assistant," Mingshen dryly commented.

Bojing burst into tears with the sarcasm.

"Ignore him, Bojing," Jia patted his head. "Don’t worry about Shilin. He must be out somewhere-"

*BANG*

Suddenly to everybody’s horror, a gunshot sound sinisterly richoted in the air. The atmosphere froze for a second as if it came to a standstill.

The sound came somewhere from the room in one of the upper floors of the same A wing where they were. Chaos erupted in the hotel and the security staff quickly rose on their feet to figure out the situation.

Jia and the gang hastily headed to the security office too where they saw the general manager of the hotel with the security chief.

"What happened? Did you find out where the gunshot came from?"

"We just got a call from one of the guests on the twelfth floor and some other guests too who said that the sound definitely came from one of their adjacent rooms. It was too loud and near for them."

Twelfth floor...That’s the floor where Chow Mey and Dong Haoyu’s rooms are.

Jia suddenly felt a bad foreboding.

They got another call where the guest stammered with fear laced in her voice, "I-I think it was the room next door mine! I literally fell with a sudden shot just springing up out of nowhere! Please take me out of here! W-what if he comes for me next? You should be ashamed of your security!"

The general manager tried to calm her down. "Mam, please don’t be afraid. We are already on our way. Don’t head out or open the door for anyone until we give the green signal."

"Please come fast! This is terrifying! I will sue you for this!" She sobbed.

Jia asked, "Who is staying in the room beside hers?"

The attendant could hardly believe it herself as she checked the record.

"Mr. Dong Haoyu."
