Chapter 174: Humanity and duty

"So he was the one to suffocate that trash oldie with the pillow," Mingshen’s eyes gleamed with thrill.

Jia somberly nodded. "Yes. That’s why he put in the sleeping pills because he didn’t want Wan Guanting to resist. Coupled with the cold medicine, he was already weak so when he suffocated him that the medicine along with asphyxiation caused a cardiac arrest and he died.

But a problem arose when Chow Mey also arrived at the same time as he was in the room. So he quickly hid in the bathroom. She fainted and he took the chance to quickly escape, but he forgot to close the curtains in haste which were previously closed when the party had ended."

"So she really fainted?"

Jia didn’t answer.

"I don’t know. I cannot say if it was real or...if she knew that he was hiding in the room all along and so she pretended to faint for him to escape. I asked her two more questions - if she felt anybody’s presence and if she happened to notice the balcony. For the first one, her answer was instantaneous that she didn’t see anybody, almost as if trying to stop that line of interrogation there. As for the balcony, I am unsure if she actually saw the cable outside or she didn’t."

"I can imagine why the lover boy would want to kill him but I don’t understand why he didn’t confess immediately when his woman was arrested?" Mingshen asked.

"I think he had expected Chow Mey to get arrested because she was caught on camera. The first suspicion would naturally fall upon her. But perhaps, he was being patient. He thought that she would fight for herself and since she really didn’t kill him, it would be hard to prove the murder against her only with circumstantial evidence. She didn’t have the cold or sleeping medicine with her either to prove anything."

Her eyes flickered. "And also...he wanted to protect himself too not because he was selfish but because he killed Wan Guanting solely to free Chow Mey from him forever. He probably dreamed that after this, they would happily live forever. He wanted to spend her life with her but how will he do that if he is in jail himself? So even when she was arrested, he patiently saw first how things were going.

When he understood that Chow Mey wasn’t speaking at all in her defense and that she could really be tried for murder, he finally stepped in and confessed tonight. It wasn’t a fake confession. It was real. That’s why he was shocked when I told him that Xin Manchu is the killer. He must be wondering how that could be when he killed Wan Guanting in the first place? The answer was right before me since the beginning anyway."

Mingshen asked, "Hm?"

"When Dong Haoyu came running to us telling us about Chow Mey’s arrest, do you remember what he said?"

’Mey is innocent! She didn’t kill Director Wan. This is ridiculous! They have got the wrong person.’

"They have got the wrong person. Doesn’t this sentence sound a bit odd?"

Mingshen tapped his fingers inside his pockets. "How is he so sure that they got the wrong person or if any person was involved at all in the first place?"

"Unless he is that person himself. That’s why he didn’t hesitate at all. Psychologically speaking, even when a person trusts someone, they usually say that He or she couldn’t have done it. Couldn’t have. The slim possibility of doing it always remains. Like Meng Rin said. But Dong Haoyu confidently said She didn’t kill Director Wan. There was a distinct sense of certainty in it. It was only because he knew what the truth was."

He tilted his head. "So you mean to say that she probably knew that her boyfriend killed that oldie and was trying to protect himself? But she was defending herself."

Jia exhaled. "Either she thought that she would be eventually set free because other than the footage, there wasn’t really any more hard evidence. Nobody actually saw her killing him or even found the pills. She would then leave everything behind her and perhaps start her relationship with Dong Haoyu anew."

"Or?"

"Or that she was confused at the beginning. She was having trouble understanding as to why Dong Haoyu would do this? If he did, then why should she take the blame? But somewhere, she felt that whatever he did was for her sake so she didn’t rat him out either. Then she must have realized that he would have found out the truth without her knowledge and he planned to take revenge from Wan Guanting.

I believe it’s the latter because as she was taken to the police custody, she was strangely very calm, unlike the time she was fighting for herself. She knew that Dong Haoyu knew everything about her and her relationship with Wan Guanting. So she wanted to protect him by taking the blame just like what he did today."

Mingshen raised his brow. "But she already knew that he was inside the room. So why would she be confused?"

"If she really felt that she saw Dong Haoyu, she wouldn’t know what to do about it. She doesn’t love him the way he does, so at first, she was defensive. Plus, she also didn’t see him immediately coming to confess when she was being grilled with questions. So she might have misunderstood him."

She gazed at Dong Haoyu’s room across the pool.

"But I also understood something after talking to her tonight. She does feel guilty of using Dong Haoyu without returning his feelings to escape from Wan Guanting. His emotions were pure but hers weren’t. So at one point during this case, she might have thought that she could be selfless this time and protect him. But it’s only my speculation because her feelings about him are complicated."

Mingshen chuckled. "I don’t think her feelings are complicated anymore. If she didn’t love him before, she sure does now."

Jia said nothing.

"But that’s what’s bothering you, isn’t it? The lover boy killed Wan Guanting for the woman he loves so much. He stained his hands with blood. She now finally understands the depth and sincerity of it. So if they are set free, they can start a new life together."

He smiled. "But you are a cop. No matter how much you would want for them to get a happy ending, they just can’t because the lover boy broke the law. You understand why he killed that oldie but you are helpless before justice. You can stay quiet about this if you want. That other Xin guy is already arrested. You don’t need to open this can of worms and expose the lover boy.

But as a dutiful cop, it’s your responsibility to get him arrested. So you would have to speak about it because you have to be fair. Then that woman will have to live a lonely life and after the kind of life she went through, you want her to be happy. But the lover boy has closed that door now. So your humanity and duty are at crossroads now, am I not right, Spicy?"
