Chapter 170: Exposing the culprit (2)

Xin Manchu trembled and shook with rage. His gaze seemed glossy as if this was beyond his understanding.

Zeng Shan parted and shut her lips. "How does it make any sense? What if I had gone to my balcony after returning to my room and saw this cable hanging off that you speak of?"

"That’s exactly why he accompanied you immediately after the party, right? Just so that he could keep you away from the balcony and when you would be fast asleep, quietly tip-toe out of your balcony to climb his way up."

Xin Manchu breathed hard as his chest rapidly swelled in and out.

Mingshen laughed and nudged Meng Rin, pointing at him. "See this is how a victim suffers during asphyxiation. You are seeing a live demonstration~"

"Booossss!" Bojing cried and whispered to him. "C-can you not see that s-she is terrified?"

"Shouldn’t everybody be enjoying Spicy’s big detective reveal?" His brow arched. "Such disrespect towards my research subject!"

"..."

Shilin cast a sideways glance at Meng Rin, who was clenching her fists, clearly shaken more so by Mingshen’s taunt. Though it wasn’t directed at her, Shilin could still sense a distinct dread in her irises.

Why is she so frightened anyway?

Xin Manchu said out loud. "That’s not it! I went with Shan because we..." he hesitated a bit with Guo Juan in the same place.

"Because we are together. Not because I had any other intentions!"

Jia watched out like a hawk. "Your intentions are not so pure after all. You spoke against Chow Mey in front of the media. You also attempted to sway me by saying that she had the most chances to spike the drink. You were very keen on framing her, correct? Not only you got a suitable scapegoat to frame for your murder plan, but you also got your revenge against her for humiliating you when she stood up for Guo Juan. Hitting two birds with an arrow."

Guo Juan’s eyes were filled with tears as she broke down.

"These are all theories you are concocting!" Xin Manchu’s temper flew to an inexplicable height. "I didn’t mix in anything nor did I climb any balcony!"

"I think you will only confess if we find the pills in your possession," her eyes squinted.

"Why will I have any pills with me!?" He gritted his teeth.

"Because upon a little asking around, I found out that you had asked the staff here for a cold medicine the evening Wan Guanting died."

He froze.

She smiled. "Quite arrogant of you I must say. You procured the medicine to mix in in the same hotel where you are staying at. You didn’t even have to head out. I believe you will still have the strip lying around somewhere."

Xin Manchu’s reaction made Zeng Shan’s eyes widen with horror. "Th-This cannot be true! You cannot be a murderer!"

"I-I am not a murderer! I didn’t kill anybody! She is lying!"

Just then Bai Caishen’s phone rang and he picked it up. He listened to the other end speaking and his eyes widened. "We are coming."

Ke Yufei asked, "What’s wrong?"

"It was from the Tianjin Bureau."

Jia blinked. "Did Chow Mey say something?"

He shook his head. "Even more shocking. Haoyu confessed to the murder."

"Supervisor Lei!"

Jia breathlessly came in despite the agony her knee was going through. The moment she heard of the news she understood what Dong Haoyu was trying to do. He wanted Chow Mey out anyhow and in any way - even if he has to take the blame.

She saw Dong Haoyu sitting at a little distance, lost in a trance. He was made to wait to be questioned.

"Miss. Song," he raised his brow.

Meng Rin and the crew hastily arrived too. She, too, saw Dong Haoyu in a dazed state.

No way...Was he too...?

No! B-But he loves Chow Mey so much. Why would he do anything to frame her like this!

Supervisor Lei was irked to see her interference again but he was too tired to argue. "If this is about Mr. Dong’s abrupt confession, then I am in the blind here too. He is stubborn to not yield from his stance. But I am not worried about that. I will soon uncover his lies once I bring him in for questioning. He is just taking her blame, that’s all."

Jia said, "There is no need for any questioning anymore, Supervisor Lei because we already have the culprit."

"I know since we already caught Chow Mey."

"Not her. The real culprit."

Xin Manchu was pushed inside despite his resistance. He dashed towards Lei Honghui and banged his palms on his desk. "That’s great that we are here! You should arrest this damn woman! She is spouting a murder accusation against me!"

Mingshen, who was leaning against the wall, yawned. "It’s so boring when the guilty are cornered like this. They know nothing but to yap and cry."

Lei Honghui was left speechless. But before he could question her, Jia made her way towards Dong Haoyu and stood before him. He slowly lifted his gaze and stared at her.

"Miss. Song."

"You don’t have to do this."

He smiled softly. "This is the only right thing to do."

"No. The right thing is for the real culprit to be put in jail."

He tilted his head, frowning. "That’s what I am doing."

"What you are doing is only taking the blame for Chow Mey. But if you do that then Xin Manchu will be scot free."

His eyes stretched wide hearing that. "Huh...? Xin Manchu? What does he have to do with anything?"

"He is the one who killed Wan Guanting."

Dong Haoyu stared at her in disbelief. "That’s...not possible."

From the other side, Xin Manchu lashed out. "Yes that’s not possible because she is lying!"

Bai Caishen narrowed his eyes. "The hotel attendant confirmed that you took the cold medicine, Manchu."

"Th-That doesn’t mean anything!"

"Enough!" Lei Honghui snapped in a cold voice.

He looked at Jia with contempt. "I think I was clear that the Tianjin Bureau doesn’t need Beijing Bureau’s interference. Then what is going on?"

"There are some new developments that throw light on this case a little differently, Supervisor Lei," Jia said.

She crisply explained her case against Xin Manchu and also showed the evidence of the pictures that she took, putting the latter in a deep thought. Coupled with the fact that he had motive against Wan Guanting, his guilt didn’t seem to be a far-fetched idea. Wan Guanting wasn’t exactly an angel anyway.

Lei Honghui narrowed his eyes. "I guess we need to talk a bit, Mr. Xin."
