Chapter 171: Ugly reality
After Xin Manchu was taken into the police custody for further questioning, Dong Haoyu at a distance could only watch the events unfold before him in a daze. Zeng Shan was in a similar state who could hardly believe her boyfriend to be the murderer.
While chaos ensued after this shocking revelation was out in the open, Jia took Lei Honghui’s permission to talk to Chow Mey. Though he didn’t want any further intervention from her, he helplessly allowed her. He thought that maybe talking to a woman will let Chow Mey open up to speak the truth.
Jia stepped in the interrogation room and she saw a visibly strained and annoyed Chow Mey impatiently fidgeting in her seat.
"Miss. Song!"
She slightly jumped up in her seat, meeting her eyes. Tension marred on her face.
Jia took a seat opposite her and grimly stared at her. "Miss. Chow."
She quickly asked, "What is going on outside? Don’t tell me Haoyu is doing something stupid! He looked very strange when he left! I don’t want...I don’t want him to-"
"Take your blame?"
"Of course! Why is he unnecessarily intervening in all of this!?" Frustration made her clench her jaw.
"Simply because he loves you, Miss. Chow."
She stiffened and remained silent.
"You do things when you truly love that person and only to protect you, he didn’t hesitate even a bit to confess to a murder he didn’t do."
She shook hard. "He...he r-really said that to that cop outside?"
"Yes."
"That’s not true!" She banged her hands on the table. "This is crazy! Haoyu didn’t do anything!"
Jia said, "So haven’t you. But you aren’t making your case easier by staying silent. And now with Mr. Dong coming forward to protect you, his life and future is also at stake."
Chow Mey turned pale with tears brimming her eyes.
Jia didn’t wish to be harsh with her as she could imagine she had her own past and reasons for staying silent. But Dong Haoyu was also getting involved only for the sake of protecting the woman he loved. Jia couldn’t sit back anymore and let things flow.
"Miss. Chow, if you don’t say anything now, you would only become the scapegoat for the real culprit to escape. You are helping the culprit. He or she must be laughing at a corner, thinking that it was so convenient to frame you. You might not care about yourself but the law does. We absolutely cannot let any innocent person suffer for a crime they didn’t do. Think of Mr. Dong too. You might not return his feelings but do you want to give him the sadness of seeing the woman he loves in jail?"
Chow Mey’s shoulders dropped and she weakly rested her elbows on the table, burying her face in her palms. Her soft sobs echoed in the room as she continued to cry without a word.
Eventually, she looked at Jia with a weary gaze that had given up on the consequences.
"I have slept with him. That bastard and disgusting monster."
Jia had never judged her solely on the fact that she had visited Wan Guanting early in the morning or had a copy of his met card. But as the case continued, she faintly realized that there might be a potential physical relationship between them which she absolutely didn’t want to come forward with.
"I caught his eye when I was desperately trying my luck to get spotted by someone who recognized my talent. We have these...underground talent rings."
She blinked. "What is that?"
"People who dream to become artists and actors go to such places in hopes to get scouted by someone. It’s illegal. But people who get tired of facing disappointment in the mainstream industry resort to such places. We aren’t with any entertainment agency so it’s easy to exploit us and use our talent for cheap. I bagged roles because Wan Guanting found me but it wasn’t for free," she wryly smiled.
Jia remained silent.
"But I didn’t care. I was young and too passionate about my dream. I did some roles here and there and after getting recognition for my talent, he cast me for this drama. Of course, it wasn’t for free. I was a great choice to be the female lead but it wasn’t like he had any drought of good actresses. The role would have simply gone to somebody else had I refused to sleep with him."
Jia balled her fist hard. Fury exploded in her chest listening to her ordeal. She was forced upon years upon years only so that she could fulfill her dream.
Chow Mey chuckled as a tear slipped past her cheek. "But it just didn’t end with my physical exploitation. He told me to get this and that surgery done to get my face "fixed" of any irregularities. It should be perfect. I was terrified of those treatments. I really didn’t want to go through them, but once again, Wan Guanting held the power. He would throw me out if I didn’t adhere to him."
Chow Mey shook hard and broke down. "Just...just look at me now. I look terrible. People might praise me for my acting but behind my back, they equally mock me for my artificial beauty treatments. They laugh...at how I look now. It was so painful. It is humiliating..."
The heartbreaking sound of her gasps and sorrows made Jia’s vision blurry.
Chow Mey tried to calm her shaky breaths. "Then I finally got contracted with an entertainment agency. Our relationship continued until Haoyu confessed to me. We met on the drama set and a year later, he confessed. I was shocked. I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t look at him that way. I rejected him. But he didn’t give up."
Her faraway gaze seemed to mesh her mind in the past. "Haoyu was very stubborn. He tried to do everything possible to win over me. But I pushed him away because of my relationship with Wan Guanting. I had no face to accept him. But then I thought...that if I accepted Haoyu, I could put an end to my relationship with Wan Guanting. How could I cheat on my boyfriend? I practically begged him and to my surprise, he agreed."
She burst into a sardonic laughter. "I couldn’t believe what was happening. I thought he would still force me to keep meeting whether or not I had a boyfriend. But I was very happy to think about anything else. I thought I found my freedom. Even though I was being despicable to Haoyu because I was using him to escape from Wan Guanting, I didn’t care."
Jia guessed after a thought. "But I don’t think he let you go."
Hearing that, her black irises glazed with such animosity that stretched as far as the depths of hell took her.
"Yeah, he didn’t. I was being fooled."
