Chapter 125: We meet again

Chapter 125: We meet again

Around the same time as Jia went to sleep, Huojin decided that it was for the best to leave now. For some reason, he had stayed back with Zhang Feiyue, who hadn’t moved from beside his wife’s bed for hours.

"You should eat something, Zhang Feiyue."

Zhang Feiyue was too lost to respond. His reddened eyes were tired. He was gently holding onto Zhang Luqi’s hand. The heartbreaking wounds on her face and the different tubes connecting to her chest and hands had shaken him to his core.

Huojin silently released a breath.

"You need to take care of her if you want her to wake up soon. Your body needs food and sleep for that."

He said nothing.

"She wouldn’t want to see you like this either."

He ever so slightly trembled.

Huojin squeezed his shoulder in a reassuring pat and quietly left the ward. He then took a quick look at the middle aged man with whom Zhang Luqi’s car had crashed.

"How are you doing Mr. Han?" He asked with a smile.

He weakly nodded. "My leg still hurts though."

"Not for long. The doctors and nurses here are great. You will be taken good care of."

His daughter in her thirties, who was by his side, wiped her tears. "Thank God Dad is okay. I was so terrified when I heard of the violent crash. That other woman...I heard she slipped into a coma. I don’t know what I would have done if Dad had..." she choked, leaving her words unsaid.

She then gnashed her jaw saltily. "Can you not do anything against that mother? It was her irresponsibility that she wasn’t looking after her kid and two people almost died! How could you just let her go? I don’t blame the child but I definitely blame her!"

Huojin could understand her emotions very well. He wouldn’t have been so forgiving either if it had happened with his sister.

"I understand your anger, Miss. Han. She would be facing legal consequences for sure. She is liable to pay compensation and the court will decide the sentencing. Many more could have gotten seriously involved but thankfully didn’t."

She felt relieved hearing that.

Mr. Han released a small breath. "It was so unfortunate. The poor child looked so confused on the road."

Huojin grimly nodded. "It would be traumatic for any child to see such an accident take place."

"No, I mean when he was walking across the road before the accident. I had spotted him and was horrified to see him with the green signal still on. A second later, I saw the same reaction on that woman’s face who was about to hit him. Her car was beside mine. She sharply turned her car which hit mine. Poor kid..."

Huojin blinked. "I see...If I may ask, what do you mean that he was confused?"

Mr. Han frowned, unsure. "I don’t really know. I just got that feeling. Maybe I was imagining things. I got to see him only for a second or so and then everything happened so fast. My memory feels all jumbled up now," he tiredly said, "But I just thought he looked very confused."

Huojin didn’t follow up more and smiled. "Take rest, Mr. Han."

He walked out of his ward, his gaze thoughtful.

Confused...

Suddenly, he bumped into someone near the lift and his daze broke. "I am so sorry!"

Then his eyes widened. "Wait, you?"

Li Beiye blinked at him, surprised and her lips stretched into a pleasant smile a moment later. "The cop who is against smoking."

Huojin said, "It’s for your own good. How come you are at the hospital?"

Beiye pointed at her knee. "I fell from my bike and hurt my knee."

He looked down at the dressing. "Oh."

She smiled. "What brings the cop here?"

He pressed the down button for the lift as he said, "A major accident happened near Infiniti Technologies. I was there for another case when I watched it happen."

"Oh. I heard about it a few minutes ago when the nurse was treating me. Very sad affair indeed."

The lift arrived with a ding and the doors opened. They stepped in after two nurses got out.

Beiye looked at him and said, "I hope they are okay."

His gaze dimmed thinking about Zhang Feiyue and his heartbroken figure. "Not okay. The woman is in a coma. Her husband is there by her side. He is devastated."

Beiye kept quiet.

"It was for his case that I was there."

"I am sorry to hear that."

The lift reached the ground floor in silence as nobody continued the conversation. She slightly limped as she exited the hospital.

Huojin asked, "Do you have a ride?"

Beiye took a moment to respond. "I booked a cab but it canceled on me. I am trying to book another one but no luck yet."

Huojin checked the time and it was quite late in the evening. "I can drop you if you don’t mind."

She arched her brow, her black orbs twinkling. "I guess you seem to miss me a lot."

"Not really."

"You don’t say that to a woman’s face. It’s extremely offensive, you know."

"You don’t really look that offended."

She let out a playful smile. "I hardly get offended but when I do, it becomes bad news. Real bad."

They reached the parking area and Beiye whistled. "Oh my, a police car. Am I being taken to jail?"

He gave her a side glance. "Have you committed any offense?"

She stared at him unblinkingly. "No."

"Then this car is taking you straight home," he smiled.

"So gentlemanly of you," she chuckled. "Can I kiss you on the cheek?"

"No."

"Don’t be so quick to reject."

"Don’t be so quick to ask. Especially to a stranger."

"We had such a good time in college. Are we still strangers?" she pouted.

"What is my name?"

Beiye didn’t answer.

He smiled. "You don’t even know my name."

"Mo Huojin."

He was unprepared to hear that.

She chuckled. "You showed us your badge that day, remember?"

But I never announced my name, Huojin thought. She remembered my name from the ID in those small letters even after so many days?

"...You might know my name, but we are still strangers."

"Then why should I take an offered ride from a stranger?" She folded her arms.

"Because being a cop hopefully gives me credibility."

"Full marks. You give good answers~"

"But you don’t ask good questions."

Her brow twitched.

As they rode along the way, Huojin asked, "I heard from Jia that Geng Anhe confessed to everything."

Beiye looked up with her eyes sparkling. "Oh yes that was some interesting drama~"

"It’s strange though. From what I got to know from Jia, I didn’t think she would be the sort of person to come out with it."

"Guilt can change people, you know?"

He gazed at Beiye with a masked expression. "So do threats."

Beiye met his gaze head on as if challenging it. "Why do I feel that you have something to say to me?"

Huojin retracted his gaze and looked back at the road. "Nothing."

He stopped the car outside Beiye’s apartment complex. She stepped out and smiled at him through the window. "Thanks for the ride."

She turned and headed towards the gate when he said, "Wait."

Beiye turned and blinked. Then she beamed and hopped back near the window. "Did you change your mind about the kiss?"

"No."

She clicked her tongue.

He peered into her eyes and asked, "Were you there near the accident site today?"

Beiye gazed at him fixedly. "No. Why would I be there?"

Huojin furrowed his brows for a moment. "I see. It’s nothing."

Guess it was my imagination then.

"Take care and good night," he said and drove his car away.

Beiye stood there watching him until he disappeared from her sight.
