Chapter 49: Shadepiercer Sword

Agares’s eyes shot open—he was shocked to see that he wasn’t dead. He was still lying there.

"What... happened?" gasped Agares.

He turned his head and clearly saw the black-dressed woman lying helplessly beside him.

She was on her back, limp, with the black sword Shadepiercer firmly stabbed into the ground, standing upright.

"What did you—"

"I couldn’t do it," interrupted the black-dressed woman, confusing Agares.

"What do you mean?"

"Your power earlier... it was enough to wound my sword spirit. I don’t have the strength."

"Come here and kill me. That way, the Shadepiercer will be yours."

Agares went silent. He didn’t know what to do. His strength was drained, his body was heavily wounded, and his sword had been destroyed.

He had no idea how he was supposed to kill her now.

"Sigh!"

With all his might, Agares tried to rise, even screaming from the pain. The woman watched as he struggled—knowing her time had come, and it was time for eternal rest.

Even crawling, Agares managed to reach her. When he tried to pull the Shadepiercer from the ground, he didn’t have the strength anymore.

He failed to lift it, collapsing on his back again, exhausted.

"HAHAHA!"

"What a battle, leaving us both like this—barely alive."

Agares tried to control his breathing, no longer gasping as heavily. His gaze drifted up toward the red sky—one he had never seen before in his life.

"Why must we kill each other when we could work together?" whispered Agares.

"The only way to claim the Shadepiercer is to kill the sword spirit that resides within it."

"HAHAHA!"

"If I can’t even lift the sword, how can I kill you?"

"Let’s work together. Temper your ambition. I’ll help you achieve your goal."

"After all, we want the same thing."

"Huh?"

"You’re human. Why would you want to destroy them?" the woman asked, shocked.

"There are many reasons I hate them. Humans of this era... they’re truly bastards!"

"HAHAHA!"

"You’re a strange one, Saber," said the woman in the black dress. Agares didn’t respond, staying quiet as she laughed like that.

They both fell silent for a moment, staring at the same sky, feeling the same pain. After a long pause, the woman finally realized Agares wasn’t just any ordinary person.

He might be human, but he was different from the rest. The others who had tried to wield the Shadepiercer came only with the intent to kill her and purify the sword.

That’s why her attitude had grown so hardened from all those past experiences.

"My name is Velmira."

"It means ’courage in elegance.’"

Agares turned to look at her and gave a faint smile upon hearing Velmira begin to open up to him. It seemed Agares had succeeded in persuading her to work with him.

That way, he didn’t have to kill her, and she didn’t have to kill him.

They could live together—united by a shared goal: to destroy the human world.

"My name is Agares."

"It means... well, it just means Agares. Myself."

"I don’t know—my father never told me what it meant."

"Haha!"

"You’re funny and unusual," Velmira said, laughing and closing her eyes.

"Alright, Agares. From now on, we’ll work together."

Agares nodded. He touched the Shadepiercer, and so did Velmira. A surge of dark energy burst forth, forming two distinct vortexes—one purple, one black.

Slowly, their strength and stamina began to return.

Outside their subconscious realm, the black dark energy that had been infecting Agares’s veins began to subside.

His power surged again, and his eyes lit up with vibrant purple.

Li observed with a calm expression, understanding what had happened.

"Looks like he succeeded."

Agares’s condition continued to improve, his awareness returning. The purple light in his eyes slowly faded.

With new confidence, he drew the Shadepiercer and swung it sideways—releasing a slash of dark purple energy forward.

The slash struck the wall, triggering a massive explosion. Li watched the power unfold, nodding in recognition of the Shadepiercer’s incredible strength.

"Congratulations, Sir."

"You’ve successfully mastered the Shadepiercer!" praised Li.

"Your attack power will now increase significantly."

Agares nodded, satisfied with the results. His goal was now clear: proceed to floor five and challenge the boss waiting there.

"Is there anything else you need? I’d be happy to assist."

The man nodded. He stepped toward Li and resumed a trade. He handed over his tier-three sword, which Li immediately scanned to assess its quality and value.

[1 Item = 15 Monster Cores]

"I’ll buy this tier-three sword for 15 monster cores. Deal?" Li asked.

Agares nodded without much expression. The transaction succeeded, and a system panel appeared before him, showing that 15 monster cores had been added to his inventory.

[Items:]

[68x Monster Cores] [+15]

With that many, Agares could at least buy several potions while gathering more monster cores to meet Li again later.

[10x HP Potions]

[10x Mana Potions]

[Total Cost: 60 Monster Cores]

[PAID IN FULL!]

Agares received two separate pouches: one filled with 10 HP potions, the other with 10 Mana potions.

He didn’t have enough monster cores left to buy other items. His low-quality gear had all been used up. It was time for him to continue his journey.

He had to move quickly—he didn’t know how far the city’s soldiers had gotten in pursuing him.

"Thank you for shopping with me. See you on the next floor."

"Next floor?" asked Agares.

"That’s right. Merchants aren’t just on floor five. You’ll also find one on floor ten."

"Try to hold out until floor ten. Returning to floor five would be... troublesome."

The man standing before merchant Li nodded, fully understanding his words. After saying farewell, Agares walked out of the room, the Shadepiercer now strapped to his waist.

"With this, I don’t have to worry about my gear anymore."

"I now have a tier-five sword with a darkness affinity. It must be an affinity weapon—it greatly enhances my dark energy control."

"Only... I still lack proper armor."

At a three-way intersection, Agares followed a green arrow and carefully entered another corridor. Ahead, he saw a bright blue light at the end of the passage—a sign it led to a room.

After walking for some time, he finally reached the chamber at the end. Just as he suspected, it was a boss room.

Inside weren’t just Crygma Shardlings, but also a massive turtle-like monster, two meters tall—clearly the boss among them.

"Floor five boss."

"I should use it to test the power of the Shadepiercer!"
