Chapter 39: Mysterious Room

"Material Forge? Wait! Are you trying to take me back to explore this dungeon?" Erika asked, shocked.

Agares cleared his throat. He stepped past Erika and left the hallway to return to the previous room. Erika followed, but she was still trying to question why Agares didn’t take her home first.

Erika’s presence near Agares could be used by him as a shield. If Natalya Thorn tried to manipulate people’s minds to expose Agares’ identity, then Agares would use Erika to threaten her.

That was why Agares couldn’t let her go home first. If he did, he would be in trouble once he reached the ground.

"I need you here. So, I can’t let you go home first."

"Need me? Or are you holding me hostage?" asked Erika, making Agares stop in his tracks.

He responded by turning his head back, clearly looking at Erika intently. Agares had already guessed that Erika was a smart woman.

"You are indeed smart, Erika."

"I already knew that. You are a criminalno matter what your justification is, Agares."

"I didn’t create myself, but the palace and the people there did. If you want to blame your situation, then blame them! Curse them."

"I am a product of the hatred they created," Agares replied coldly.

Erika fell silent. She admitted she couldn’t stay with Agares if he intended to make her a hostage. Erika said she would find a way home even if it meant killing herself. Erika was not afraid.

"I’d rather suffer at the hands of those monsters than become your hostage!"

Agares fell silent. He continued to watch Erika enter another corridor at the three-way intersection. He didn’t stop her because he wanted to know where Erika was going.

Whether the corridor was the right one or not, no one knew. Agares just wanted to make sure Erika went there.

Erika was still stubborn. She continued to step into the dungeon hallway without knowing what was inside. The further she went, the more Erika felt threatened.

HSSSHH!

From a distance, Erika faintly heard a hissing sound like a snake. Her steps came to a complete halt when she saw a group of snake monsters with bodies about 1-2 meters long.

Not only were they large, their scales were slimy brownish-green and emitted a faint glow.

Their fangs were long and large, yellow in color and constantly dripping a foul-smelling green slime that looked like acid or poison.

"What the—"

"Watch out, Erika!" Agares shouted.

"Activate Skill!"

"Saber Skill: Shadow Cleave!"

Agares swung his sword sideways, sending a crescent-shaped shadow attack straight toward the serpent monster that was about to devour Erika.

The attack hit both snakes directly, revealing their HP bars in Agares’ vision.

The two snakes were named Bogfang Serpents, level three monsters with water affinity. Even so, their strength lay in their poison, especially in their fangs and slimy scales.

Erika saw the attack and felt the explosion of energy. Once she was safe, she got up and quickly left the place, heading towards Agares.

"Are you stupid? You’re unarmed, how are you going to fight them?" Agares complained.

"I-I’m sorry."

"Tch!"

Agares glanced forward; both monsters had around 450 HP. With the previous attack and debuff, the damage dealt increased to 320 damage.

"What should we do? We can’t win against them," Erika said.

"No!"

"We can defeat them," Agares explained.

"Activate Skill!"

"Saber Skill: Shadow Cleave!"

Agares poured his dark affinity energy into his sword, activating the dark saber skill that made his eyes glow dark purple. With a similar move, he attacked the monsters and killed them instantly.

An explosion occurs, shattering their bodies in the energy affinity attack. Agares’ eyes return to normal.

Erika, who had been watching the change in Agares’ eyes from the energy affinity, had never seen another hero-class knight perform such a thing.

The attack defeated them. They died and a notification panel appeared in front of Agares. The panel explained what Agares got after defeating the two monsters.

[DING! Congratulations, Agares! You have defeated the monster]

Agares smiled as he closed the system panel. He turned and saw Erika still staring at him intently. Agares was curious why Erika was looking at him like that.

"What’s wrong?" Agares asked.

"What really happened to you, Agares?"

The man fell silent when Erika asked that. He invited Erika to walk back to another corridor leading to the fourth floor.

Agares was confident that the deeper he explored the floor, the faster and easier it would be for him to find the location of the materials he needed.

Agares took Erika’s hand and led her away from that place. Using the digital map in front of him, Agares was able to track their current location based on the map.

To reach the boss room, Agares had to pass through several intersections.

"I don’t know why, but I feel like you’re different from the other knights I’ve met so far," explained Erika.

"Is it your power that makes you hated by the entire Great Empire?" asked Erika again.

Agares remained silent, then nodded in agreement. He clearly stated that the reason they hated him was because of his connection to Job Saber.

They believed that Job Saber was the most despicable and cursed job among all hero jobs.

"The only reason is because my hero job is Saber. If not, I might have been known as the Lux hero."

"Hero of Lux? But aren’t the heroes of Lux those who—"

"Yes. Previously, my affinity was light. But due to a certain incident, my affinity changed on its own."

’Light affinity? There’s no mistake, he’s one of the chosen heroes,’ Erika replied.

They stepped out of the dungeon hallway and arrived in another room. When they got there, Agares and Erika responded with surprise.

"Isn’t this supposed to be the boss room?"

Erika nodded. She remembered the route of this hallway clearly, because they had previously arrived at the third floor boss room through this dungeon hallway.

If that was the case, then the place they were currently in should be the fourth floor boss room of this dungeon.

"We should be fighting the fourth floor boss here, but why did the location change?"

Agares and Erika arrived at a circular empty room with a black interdimensional portal in front of them.

The area around the room was filled with brightly lit torches and 13 statues of knights standing tall with swords in their hands, creating a suspicious impression for Agares.

"Has there ever been a record of the dungeon route changing?" Agares asked, Erika shook her head.

"Never. I’ve never heard of a dungeon changing."

"This is really suspicious."

The man dared to step into the mysterious room, Erika following Agares from behind. But a red light shone in Agares’ right hand, unnoticed by him.

As they descended the stairs and entered the circular altar, a strong purple light emanated from every floor torch, startling and terrifying Erika and Agares.

"What’s happening, Agares?!" Erika exclaimed in panic.

"I don’t know. Stay behind me, Erika!"

Both of them were on guard, Agares with his back to Erika, who looked alert. The lines connected to each other, creating a purple dome that trapped them both inside.

From outside the dome, 13 statues began to move, their eyes emitting bright purple light, a sign that something had activated them.

"Damn it! We can’t get out of here."

"Then what can we do?" Erika panicked.

Agares remained silent, raising his sword and channeling his dark energy into it. This caused both of Agares’ eyes to glow a deep purple-black.

"We have to fight them to survive."
