Chapter 33: Crime at Midnight
Chapter 33: Crime at Midnight
***
Night.
The Thorn family residence.
The City of Berdiver.
After getting ready and putting on the necessary equipment, Agares turned around and saw that nothing had been left behind.
Earlier, Agares had told Casper Thorn that he would leave tomorrow morning. Casper agreed and had already prepared soldiers to escort Agares there.
Agares had already guessed that the soldiers were not there to escort him, but to trap him in their plan. He had another way to avoid their plan.
Leaving in the midnight when everyone was asleep was the best option. If anyone tried to stop him, Agares would not hesitate to kill them.
He opened the door and stepped into the corridor of the residence with quiet steps, trying as much as possible not to attract attention by making any noise.
Arriving at the front yard, Agares stepped forward with great relief. He looked at the gate of the residence, which was guarded by two family soldiers.
They immediately stood up and stopped the mysterious man in black armor and a cloak.
"Are you Sir Agares?" asked the soldier. Agares removed his hood.
"It’s you. Do you have business outside?" asked the soldier again, trying to confirm.
Agares cleared his throat in agreement. He deceived them by saying that he needed to visit a blacksmith’s shop, of course to pick up some equipment he needed.
"In that case, I’ll come with you. It is our duty to ensure your safety, sir!"
’There’s something strange about him,’ thought Agares.
Even so, Agares couldn’t act immediately while he was still in the Thorn family compound. He was worried that if he started a fight, it would attract a lot of attention, including Natalya’s.
Agares stepped out of the compound, followed by the soldier beside him. When the two were far enough away from the Thorn family residence, Agares hit the soldier hard on the back of the neck, knocking him out.
The man groaned in pain before fainting. Agares grabbed the man’s body so he wouldn’t make any noise. Agares quickly hid the man away so that no one would see him.
"It’s safe here," Agares whispered.
Once everything was secure, Agares ran while putting his hood back on, making his face impossible to identify.
The man’s attention was fixed on one place, commonly known as the horse-drawn carriage station. There, Agares could see three horse-drawn carriages parked, two of which had drivers.
Agares arrived and saw that the owner of the third horse-drawn carriage was fast asleep inside.
He could have left as a passenger, but the gate guards would have checked every passenger, and the chances of Agares being discovered would have been high.
But not for the drivers of horse-drawn carriages, especially those who often transported passengers from the station.
The soldiers were used to seeing them, as well as their carriages. So, Agares was able to leave the city safely as a driver, not a passenger.
Agares entered and gagged the man, the carriage driver. He asked for his name and access token, Agares knew his name.
"Niam? Is your name Niam?"
"Y-Yes, sir."
The man nodded. Though he already knew the man’s name, Agares couldn’t let him live. He might spread the word that a stranger had stolen his horse-drawn carriage. That could ruin Agares’s plans.
STAB!
Agares drew his sword and stabbed the man precisely in the body. The middle-aged man convulsed in pain, feeling the sharp blade tear through his abdomen and split his internal organs.
His first response was to vomit blood, convulse, and turn pale from blood loss.
In the end, his body grew cold, his convulsions stopped, and his eyes filled with blood, a sign of complications from his damaged internal organs.
"I’m sorry, Niam. I need your horse and carriage to leave," replied Agares.
Agares pulled out his sword and saw a purple dot of dark essence floating right in front of him. Agares held out his hand and took the Dark Essence.
[DING! Congratulations, Agares! You have obtained Dark Essence]
[Quantity: 15] [+1]
The man nodded. He dragged Niam’s body out of the carriage, giving Agares full control of the horse-drawn carriage.
To prevent anyone from seeing Niam’s body, Agares took it to another place and laid it in a small alley far from the horse-drawn carriage station.
"Alright, it’s time to go," Agares replied.
After taking care of other matters, Agares climbed onto the horse-drawn carriage and drove it away. This suddenly startled the other two carriage drivers, who were Niam’s friends.
"Hey, Niam. Where are you going?" they asked.
"I’m going out of town to do something. I’ll be back soon."
Half-asleep, the two drivers didn’t think anything of it and continued resting. Agares smiled. Now, he had a way to leave the city without anyone suspecting him.
From a distance, Agares could clearly see the southern gate of Berdiver City. There were soldiers standing guard there, but not many people were waiting to enter or leave the city.
One of the soldiers stood in the middle of the road, stopping Agares’ horse-drawn carriage. He stepped forward and asked for the carriage’s access token. Agares handed it to him.
"Niam? What are you doing out here in the middle of the night, buddy?" asked the soldier, acting friendly.
"I’m not Niam. My uncle is sick, so I’m replacing him," said Agares.
"Oh, I had no idea he could get sick. Who are you?"
"Lam. I’m his nephew. I’m from Hurdor."
"OH!"
"I remember!"
"He told me about his family in Hurdor. So it’s you, huh?" asked the soldier, completely unsuspecting.
’You fool!’
The soldier returned Niam’s access token to Agares and let him go. Half of Agares’ plan had succeeded.
He opened the hood of his cloak and looked ahead until he saw the four-way intersection in front of him.
"Nyx!"
[Standby Mode Deactivated]
[Is there anything I can do to help, Master?]
Agares tapped his magic pouch and brought out a map. Agares clearly ordered Nyx to start mapping the route from his location to the S-level dungeon.
"Map the fastest route to the dungeon."
[Yes, Master]
[Starting item scan]
[Scan complete]
[Starting route mapping]
[Destination: S-Level Dungeon]
[Map route found]
[Starting smart navigation]
In front of Agares, he saw a digital map showing two green paths. One path was at the center intersection and the other was at the left intersection. The travel time differed depending on the path they took.
[I found two routes to the destination. What’s your choice, Master?]
"Take the first route."
[First route selected]
The system panel switched from the digital map to a green navigation arrow. Based on the estimated time, Agares would arrive at the dungeon in about 2 hours by horse-drawn carriage.
Aoi emerged from the pocket of Agares’ shirt and sat down, holding onto his right shoulder.
She continued to stay by Agares’ side wherever he went, because Aoi believed that Agares would definitely be able to save the kitsune race in the future.
"Are we free from the City of Berdiver?" asked Aoi. Agares cleared his throat.
"Yes. We managed to escape."
"Now, our destination is that Level S Dungeon."
"I’ll help you, Master Ares."
"Thank you, Aoi."
