Chapter 29: Rescue Mission for Erika
"Thank you, sir..."
"You can call me Sir Thorn," said Casper, introducing himself to Agares.
Agares nodded. He turned and looked ahead, directly at the two men. It was clear that they were the only ones in the room; Agares did not know whether Erika was home or not.
As the three of them were talking, a knock on the door was heard from the room. A gate guard came to inform them.
"We have arrested a spy, sir."
"A spy?" asked Casper, surprised.
"Did anyone follow you to this house?" Casper asked Agares.
The man shook his head, a sign that he didn’t know. However, if they really had arrested a spy, then Agares had acted carelessly this time.
’How could I be so careless? I have to kill that spy,’ thought Agares.
"Let me handle this, Sir Thorn."
Casper and Natalya turned their heads, and the Thorn family head responded with a nod. He ordered the gate guard to take Agares to the prison, a suitable place for a spy.
Agares and the soldier stepped away from Casper’s office. They stepped onto the ground floor and entered the underground prison. The soldier clearly said that they locked up criminals and spies there.
As he stepped down the stairs until he was completely in the basement, Agares gasped when he saw that the spy they were referring to was the girl who had given him the piece of bread earlier.
"You?!" Agares was shocked.
"Mr. Ares?! Please let me out of here," said the girl, her eyes filled with fear.
Agares immediately ordered the soldier to release the girl. When the iron door opened, the girl ran and hugged Agares, burying her face in his embrace.
"Do you think a girl like her is a spy?" Agares asked, venting his frustration at the soldier.
"We apologize, sir."
Agares sighed and shook his head, feeling puzzled. He focused his eyes on the girl, wondering why a girl like her could be here.
"What are you doing?" asked Agares.
"I’m sorry. I’ve been following you. I shouldn’t have done that."
"You’re a saber, right? My mother often told me stories about saber knights. She said that saber knights are the best, kindest, and gentlest to us," explained the girl.
"Us?" asked Agares, confused.
The girl raised her head, seeing that not only Agares was listening, but also three soldiers were doing the same. The girl was afraid that they would discover her identity.
"I don’t want anyone else to hear."
’It seems she has the same secret as me,’ thought Agares.
"You guys go ahead. I want to talk to this girl. She’s not a spy."
"Yes, sir."
One by one, the three soldiers left the prison underground. Agares took the girl to talk in a room, and she didn’t mind.
"Alright, what do you want to say?" asked Agares.
"Please... save our race, Kitsune," replied the girl.
"Kitsune? What race is that?"
The girl sighed, she had expected that not many people knew about the kitsune race. Slowly, she removed the necklace she was wearing and a dazzling blue light appeared from her body.
Agares looked shocked, taking several steps back as he watched the girl transform into a white-and-blue fox. She was about the size of a squirrel.
"Woah, are you a cat or a raccoon?" Agares asked, amazed.
"I’m a fox!"
"Then how can you turn into a human?" Agares asked, curious.
The fox bit a necklace, explaining that it had the power to transform her body into a human form.
The girl had been using it since she started living with humans a few years ago.
"If you’ve been using it all this time, then there’s a chance humans are hunting you. Am I right?"
"Right!"
"Ten years ago, the Kingdom of Clovis broke the treaty. They invaded the Kitsune race’s territory and destroyed everything there—men were killed and women enslaved. My father and mother managed to escape," the girl answered.
Agares fell silent, watching the fox hang its head in despair, its ears folded back, a sign that it was sad. Agares crouched down and asked it a simple question.
"Do you have a name?"
"Aoi."
"Well, Aoi. I understand your situation, but I can’t help you."
"I have a complicated problem. I’m worried that if I take you with me, it will endanger your life," Agares explained.
’I have enemies all over the world. Taking her with me is a bad choice for her,’ Agares explained.
Agares’s inner thoughts were heard by the fox after it continued to focus its attention on Agares.
She didn’t know why Agares was being hunted by the whole world, she didn’t know what Agares’ problem was that made him refuse to take her with him.
"Why are you being hunted by the whole world?" asked Aoi, surprising Agares.
"Wait, how could you—"
"I have the ability to read minds. It’s a talent I’ve had since I was a child," replied Aoi.
’The ability to read minds? That’s amazing. I can know the thoughts of the people I meet,’ explained Agares, still staring at Aoi.
Once again, Aoi used her ability on Agares. The fox managed to hear what Agares was thinking after he realized what Aoi’s ability was.
Now, a smirk was clearly visible on Aoi’s face. The fox had a plan.
"I can help you read other people’s minds as long as you’re willing to take me with you," Aoi explained.
’My battle with the Great Empire and the four kingdoms will be difficult. On the other hand, I really need her ability,’ replied Agares.
’Fighting the Great Empire and the four kingdoms? What exactly is your problem, Mr. Agares?’ asked Aoi.
’I should try taking her with me for a few days. If I feel I need her, there’s no harm in keeping her around,’ explained Agares.
Aoi rounded her eyes and jumped forward, surprising Agares. Aoi continued to thank Agares for accepting her, even if only temporarily.
Agares smiled, feeling less free than before, but that was the consequence of gaining such an amazing power as reading minds.
"You can come with me for a few days. I’ll decide later whether I’ll allow you to stay or not," explained Agares.
"Thank you, Master Ares."
"Stay in your fox form, Aoi."
"Yes, master.
Aoi perched on Agares’s left shoulder, feeling comfortable after receiving the new warmth from a saber knight, the knight of her dreams since childhood.
However, for some reason, Aoi felt that Agares was not like a typical saber knight, as he was dressed entirely in black.
The two left the underground prison and arrived on the first floor. When Agares arrived, he was startled to see many soldiers from the Thorn Family being prepared by Casper Thorn. This caught Agares’ attention.
"What’s happening?" asked Agares.
Casper turned and saw Agares coming with his white fox, which was quite surprising for Casper because Agares had not come with any animals before.
"What is that?"
"A little fox. I found it in the backyard. I decided to take care of it."
"It’s up to you. Something urgent has happened to my daughter, Erika Thorn."
"What happened?" asked Agares.
"She and her party of adventurers are trapped in a dangerous dungeon. At first, it was a level A dungeon, but after exploring it further, its status was upgraded to a level S dungeon."
"That’s why I gathered the Thorn family soldiers to go rescue her," replied Casper.
Agares fell silent, then looked ahead and saw that the Thorn family soldiers were not enough to carry out the rescue mission. Agares suggested something to Casper.
"Your soldiers are weak. Let me go save her," explained Agares.
"What did you say?!" snapped another soldier.
The man smiled slyly. He drew his sword and sent dark energy into the blade, instantly turning Agares’ eyes black and purple.
Agares’ strength increased drastically. Aoi witnessed the scene, amazed and certain she had chosen the right person.
’His power is amazing.’
Natalya gasped, sensing something wrong with Agares’ abilities. He alone might be able to save Erika from the threat in the S-level dungeon.
"He’s far stronger than our soldiers. It would be best to entrust everything to Agares," Natalya replied.
’And let him die in that dungeon!’ Natalya added, which Aoi heard, causing his fox-like face to frown.
’She wants Master Ares to die in that dungeon. I can’t let that happen,’ Aoi replied.
However, Casper Thorn had already made an important decision. He decided to send the Thorn Family soldiers to go there and rescue Erika.
He refused to send Agares because he knew Agares was an important asset to the demon clan.
"The Thorn Family soldiers will go. That’s my decision!"
