Chapter 17: 17: Argument

Sue

My eyes instantly narrowed as I took a step away from him again.

"Why?" I demanded slowly.

He pursed his lips, disapproval clear in his eyes as he spoke. "For no reason. Just listen to me."

I rolled my eyes as I folded my arms, lifting my chin defiantly. "Yeah, no. You love doing this, giving me orders without any explanations like I’m some kid. I just want to know your reason for asking this from me." I pointed out, genuinely not wanting to get into a fight, but his eyes narrowed as he stepped a bit closer to me.

"I wasn’t asking you, that was an order. You’ll stay away from him. Is that clear?" He breathed out and I let out a disbelieving laugh.

"You can’t seriously expect me to listen to you. Why should I stay away from someone that was just so sweet to me?"

"Just listen to me this one time without questions." He snapped and I folded my arms.

"Well, you don’t give me orders, and you can’t force me to do whatever I don’t want since you’re not the boss of me." I pointed out without missing a beat, but my heart was racing hard and when he stepped even closer to me, my breath stumbled in my chest.

"You’re testing my patience." He growled and to my utmost surprise, a shiver rolled down my spine.

I awkwardly cleared my throat as I stared up at him.

"I guess it’s my pleasure then." I mumbled without thinking twice.

"Now wouldn’t you want that?" He drawled and as my cheeks grew hot, I tried to slip from his front but he grabbed my wrist to prevent me from moving away, trapping me in place.

"Why are you so difficult?" He gritted out and I let out a breath through my teeth. I didn’t want to keep breathing in through my nose because his scent was filling up my lungs too much for my liking in this position.

"I don’t understand what the problem is. All I asked for was a simple explanation. I don’t have to do whatever you tell me to just because you said so. I’ll have to decide first if I want to listen to you or not." I breathed out and he scoffed before stepping away.

"Suit yourself then." he bit out and I averted my gaze while trying to regulate my racing heartbeat.

"There’s a ball taking place tonight in the pack’s square, and you’ll be attending as well." He revealed and I blinked in surprise because this was my first time hearing about the ball.

I let out a low sound as I stared at him. "I- can I skip it though?" I mumbled and he shook his head.

"No." He responded immediately.

"But... why though? It’s not like my presence there is gonna be important." I pointed out and he nodded.

"It’s really not, but my brothers would be there and they want to see their mate, so you’ll attend." He explained and I noted that this time he was actually explaining his reason for wanting me to do something for once.

"I still don’t think I’d like to attend, I’ve never attended a ball before so I’m sure I’m not gonna fit in." I muttered, hating that I was revealing this to none other than Damon of all people.

But that hadn’t been a lie. I’ve really never attended a ball before, because while growing up as a freak, I was exempted from a lot of things, balls included. Being a princess didn’t matter, people only cared about my sister, hence why she’d tire only one allowed to attend balls, while my parents forbade me from attending any to avoid bringing them even more attention.

"You’ve never attended a ball?" He echoed, sounding shocked and I stiffly nodded, making him frown.

"How though? That makes no sense. Aren’t you a crowned princess? So how is that possible?" After he asked questions after questions, I didn’t know what to say in response and so I shrugged while remaining silent.

"You’ll still attend it either way. Your maids will get you ready. It’s just like a normal party, nothing special." He gruffed out and I shook my head.

"I’d still like to skip it."

"You can’t."

"But..."

"It’s an order." He snapped and as my mouth fell shut, I glared at him as anger burned within me.

He was just so insufferable.

I let out a reluctant sigh as I folded my arms. I’d have liked to keep arguing right now, but I had a feeling everything had a limit— including refusing the Prince’s orders.

"Would I have to attend as your mistress though? It’s embarrassing enough that everyone here in the palace believes that I’m your mistress when I’m clearly not."

His eyes instantly narrowed as he kept staring at me, lips in a thin line before he spoke. "Being known as my mistress isn’t a bad thing. So many girls would kill to be in your spot,"

I let out a scoff as I rolled my eyes. "That’s none of my concern. I’m not them and they’re not me. I’d not judge anyone who’d kill to be known as your mistress because it’s all survival instinct after all. However, I’m different from that." I pointed out.

He rolled his eyes and turned away to leave without bothering to respond and I bristled even more, feeling beyond enraged.

I let out an irritated scoff as I exited the room as well.

I wanted him to respond but he hadn’t, and that irritated me even more. When I realized that the man— who I had walked right into before Damon arrived to whisk me off— wasn’t present as well, the sourness within me worsened.

I trudged down the hallway, taking the next turn till I came across my two maids who bowed before me, smiles around their faces.

"Ma’am, we’ve been ordered to get you ready for the ball!"
