Chapter 404: The Side Effect
Chapter 404: The Side Effect
"Father! Ella!!!"
Abel screamed as he ran towards their burning village. He was up in the mountains for his usual hunt when he noticed a huge cloud of smoke coming from their village.
Understandably, he rushed back, only to find that everything was burning with mercenaries killing and burning everyone and everything everywhere they went.
Screams filled the entire area, and Abel ignored them all as he rushed to their burning hut. There, he saw his father Bert and Ella bathed in their own blood.
"Ella!!!" Abel screamed as quickly approached his pregnant wife. He cried as he quickly carried his wife in his arms, "Oh please, Ella... Please hang in there..."
"Abel, I feel so cold," Ella weakly whispered. "I can’t feel our baby moving inside of me..."
"No, hang in there, please," Abel cried out in hushed whispers. "I’ll save you, Ella."
Carrying her in his arms, he ran as fast as he could, but everything happened so fast. He felt something sharp striking his back, and he could only wince as he slowly fell to his knees. Gritting his teeth, he tightened his hold on his wife as he tried his best to get up.
"My my my... What do we have here?"
He heard a man chuckle behind him, but Abel ignored it. He had to escape with his wife. Ella and their baby needed a healer and their baby... He must protect and save them...
However, running now wasn’t an option with all of the mercenaries surrounding them.
Gently placing his wife down on the ground, he said, "I won’t take long, Ella. Hang in there..."
He had to fight no matter what. And as Abel unsheathed his sword, he took a deep breath before striking down everyone he could, killing all that would get in his way.
"Not bad, but you forgot not to let your guard down around those you want to protect..."
A deep masculine voice echoed from behind him. He quickly turned around, and his eyes widened as he saw Ella being held by another man, his sharp blade aimed at her neck.
"Abel," Ella weakly muttered with a reassuring smile. "Please save yourself. Stay alive..."
Before he could even react, the man slit Ella’s throat.
"No!!!"
Abel moved in haste and slashed at everyone that was trying to subdue him. He didn’t mind the wounds he was getting as he fought hard to approach his wife. He killed everyone standing in his way, his mind focused on his wife. However, he wasn’t strong enough to subdue them all.
Inevitably, he found himself crawling on the ground, his hand outstretched trying to reach for Ella’s hand. In the end, everything went black after he felt a hard blow hit his head.

"Abel! Wake up!!!"
Abel stirred as he quickly opened his eyes, his body jolting up from the bed.
"It’s been a while since you had those nightmares," Rosela commented as she gently stroked his back. She then moved and sat on his lap as she gently brushed her lips against his. "Let me take away all those nightmares like I used to."
Sighing, Abel gently pushed her away and got up from bed. That was right, it had been a while since that nightmare life taunted him. How long has it been since it happened? It was almost three hundred years ago.
"What are you doing here, Rosela?" he weakly uttered as he put on his robe. It was nothing new to him for Rosela to often sneak into his residence. Their relationship had no name, but that didn’t matter for some reason.
Rosela Benett came from the generation of the Benett Family that helped him through the tragedy of him losing his wife, unborn child and adopted father after they were murdered along with the other villagers where they used to live. The Benett Family were merchants who passed by their destroyed village and helped everyone who was still alive. They aided the wounded and helped bury the dead. Despite this, Abel didn’t know if he was fortunate to be with those still alive.
Still, his wife’s words and her reassuring smiles before she took her last breath had become his strength to move forward and give their deaths justice. Although Father Bert wasn’t his father by blood, it was he who raised him after he was abandoned as a baby. He had found a purpose to stay alive, and that was to become strong enough to avenge his family’s death.
To that end, the Benett Family became his medium for him to achieve his revenge. They brought him to Valcrez, and there, he met his Progenitor, Lord Fritz, who turned him into his Curb after losing a bet against him. Since then, Abel hunted down everyone responsible for his father, wife, and their unborn child’s deaths. And of course, he succeeded in eliminating each and every one of them.
He then returned to Valcrez and started a new life, but of course, he was someone who knew how to express his gratitude. So in return, he looked after the Benett Family for generations.
Back in the present, he felt Rosela’s arms snaking around his waist from behind. "Abel, I miss you."
Rosela then moved so that they could face each other.
’Rosela... how did their relationship turn like this?’ Abel thought as he released a deep sigh.
Rosela approached Abel first and started bugging him when Nikolai and Dahlia became a couple. At first, they simply became close in the sense that he became a shoulder she could cry from her broken heart. Abel wasn’t naive to not know how obsessed she was with their king, Nikolai right from the start, but she was unfortunate that Nikolai’s heart still belonged to her deceased twin.
From there, their relationship turned complicated as he witnessed how Rosela tried to destroy her life because Nikolai could only look at her as a sister. And he started caring more than he should by looking after her more and making sure she would not do things that could harm her. That was when they got entangled in an intimate relationship where Rosela offered herself to him. He was a responsible man, and as someone who took Rosela’s virginity, he wanted himself to be her husband, but she surprisingly turned him down. And yet, he was still hoping that Rosela would somehow still choose him in the end.
Staring at Rosela’s smiling and seductive face, a different face suddenly appeared before him.
’Fool!!!’
The familiar face of an adorable woman with those fierce dark brown red eyes and wavy short and wine-colored hair just popped out of nowhere.
"What the hell!" Abel unknowingly burst out as he hastily closed his eyes and shook his head to clear his thought.
There was no mistaking it. It was Dani’s face calling him a fool for being entangled in unrequited love with Rosela. Love... In truth, he too wondered if that deep and strong feeling he was having for Rosela was love. But one thing he was sure of was he wanted Rosela to have a happy and good life.
"What’s wrong, Abel?" Rosela asked.
"I want some time alone for now," Abel sternly stated. "Rosela, leave me alone."
He was glad that Rosela quickly left, and he cursed as he mumbled, "It’s probably the side effect of that damn Thrall Chaining Spell of hers!"
